At the 1920 Republican National Convention, the party bosses
arranged for the nomination of Wisconsin Senator Irvine Lenroot,
considered a progressive, for the Vice Presidency and then
assumed he would be unopposed on the floor.
Calvin Coolidge was nominated from the floor and won handily
among the delegates who had not gone home, becoming the running
mate of successful presidential candidate Warren Harding, who
of course died in office and was succeeded by Coolidge.

How might history have been different if the party bosses had
stuck around to get their preferred nominee Lenroot elected?

at least as tall as before...or terror has triumphed.
