How many impactful military leaders have died as a result
of wayward attacks from their own side?

    The Confederates,for example,lost A.S. Johnston and Stonewall
Jackson just in the first years of the Civil War.

Who else would have been consequential had their subordinates
    had better targeting intel?

The World Trade Center towers MUST rise again,
at least as tall as before...or terror has triumphed.

Jackson, yes, but I have never seen any claim or suggestion
that Johnston was hit by friendly fire.

    Do some more reading,then.
He was hit from behind (while not facing his army)
by a bullet of a type his army had and the Union didn't.

There were rumors that Charles XII of Sweden was killed by
    "friendly fire".

Italian Marshal Italo Balbo was killed when his transport
was shot down by Italian flak over Tripoli.

US general Leslie McNair was killed by bombs falling short
during the opening phase of Operation COBRA.

US Col. David Marcus, who became Israel's first general
under the _nom de guerre_ of "Mickey Stone", was killed
    by a Haganah sentry.

    The Confederates,for example,lost A.S. Johnston and Stonewall
Jackson just in the first years of the Civil War.

I never heard that Johnston was hit by Confederate fire.

Or worse, i.e. fired in the wrong direction or at
    the wrong target.

While commanding a front-line battalion in WW I,
    Winston Churchill several times personally
reconnoitered enemy positions; his men were warned
not to fire on anything till he got back.
