From Newsgroup: alt.free.nntp

I'm slowly migrating everything over from Windows to Linux. I have a
list of apps and functions that I use on Windows 11, checking each one
off when I have a Linux-based solution. When I have the list
completed, I'll cut over to Linux and not shed much of a tear....

One that I'm trying to check off is my newsreader. I've been using
Agent for years, but the developer has shelved further development of
the app and a few months ago stopped their newsgroup service as well.
Before that I used Gravity, which has been revived by Steve Gibson of
Gibson Research, but it isn't being produced for Linux, just Windows.

Question: What newsreader does the collective brain trust here
consider the best option, and why?

I'm using the latest version of Ubuntu Cinnamon, if that helps.

Huh? The Agent newsgroup service is working here.
I am posting this via their newsgroup service - check my headers.

Their newsgroup service stopped for me over a CC billing issue back
in 2024 and came up again around the beginning of 2025. It has been
working for me ever since (over a year now).

Before that I used Gravity, which has been revived by Steve Gibson of
Gibson Research, but it isn't being produced for Linux, just Windows.

Question: What newsreader does the collective brain trust here
consider the best option, and why?
I'm using the latest version of Ubuntu Cinnamon, if that helps.

I am using Agent for most things. It meets most of my needs.
I occasionally use Thunderbird or Pan for special cases.

The best newsreader will depend on one's needs. My needs may not be
your needs which may not be someone else's needs. We don't all have
the same needs.

Well, I was looking for a recommendation from someone who's used Agent
and knows of a Linux app that closely resembled Agent in capabilities
and user interface. But I'll look at anything that someone thinks is
a good possibility.

Thanks. I am trying pan, LOOKS very much like Agent on the surface (I
think I read somewhere that Agent was an attempt to make a pan
look-alike for Windows) but the menu contents are vastly different.

One thing I am missing is a way to group my subscribed newsgroups so
that similar groups are in a separate group from the rest of the
system. That'll be hard to give up if I am forced to go to Linux and
use pan. I don't see anything in the help system about it. Any
suggestions will be most welcome.

That must be what happened to me, but after attempting to contact them
about it through various means I figured they had just gone under.

I miss it, but Newshosting seems to be a good fit. Just wish
Newshosting had a monthly payment plan rather than just annually.
Having $80+ come out of my bank in January -- right after the
gift-buying season at Christmas -- was a big and unwelcome
surprise....

Any suggestions for a hopefully-free news-host service that I can
switch to? I don't really need the binaries groups any more, so I can
give that up, but it'd be nice to have a news host that didn't charge
but still allows me to post as well as read. (I understand some of
them are read-only, which sucks.)

Thanks for the information, Yeti. I've noted both and will dig into
them after we finish the move. (We're moving from Corona to
Crestline, CA -- just bought a house up there where the air is
clear(er) and we actually get FOUR SEASONS each year!)
