and it's not "always ask", it's "always authenticate", which means that
it will automatically send "AUTHINO USER" and "AUTHINFO PASS" (if you
let your client store the password, otherwise it prompt for the
password). Thunderbird is notorious for prompting for the password if it receives a reply from the server it doesn't understand.

The site I use for this group is called Newsgrouper and it runs on Eternal Spring if I read it correctly. Around midnight I got the notice, 502 Bad Gateway and couldn't access anything on that site.

There are some groups that are easier to read on newsgrouper than a
newsreader. Over the past month, I get a a cloudflare error nearly every
other day. I have no insight into why, but seems more frequent nearer
    holidays and weekends. Maintenance, maybe?

Also, over the last month, I havenrCOt been able to post anything.

Omg you are giving me homework?rCa.

    Dear Marika,

Please elaborate and give examples. Thanks!

I used to use something many years ago, Eudora I think, and after that Microsoft Outlook. They were just find for my needs.

These made reading easy FOR ME. Because I could sort in any number of
    ways.

Then I had little choice but to use google groups. Not much functionality.

I no longer have a computer. I use an iPad and read on Newstap. It is
pretty good. I havenrCOt figured out how to use their colored labels, but I have never done much filtering anyway. I think that in my life on usenet,
I have blocked only one person. I pretty much know who and what I want to read, so I can skip around. It might matter more if I were a beginner.

HOWEVER, in a group like rec.cooking, the threads get super super long.

I have found these longer threads easier to read on newsgrouper. I can immediately see the list of names on the left and the dates and decide
whether and what i want to read. In newstap, scrolling thru seems to take
so much longer, And or i use my hands more in newstap, making it seem
    longer

I can search on both products. But newsgrouper has fewer search options.

That is all I can think of just now.. i will read the other links you supplied. If i think of something else

Newsgrouper is my site, sorry about the errors, there is a software problem which causes occasional crashes, which I don't yet have a fix for.

Newgrouper is implemented in the Tcl language. To support secure connections (the 's' in https) I use tcltls - https://core.tcl-lang.org/tcltls/home . Sometimes I'm getting crashes or hangs in that code. I'm working with the tcltls maintainer to try to find the cause.

Newsgrouper runs on a PC in my home, connected to the internet through Cloudflare, which provides some protection from the nasties on the wild
wild web. So when the Newsgrouper code has crashed, Cloudflare reports
    the error that you see.

No problem. I am glad someone is providing alternative access.

I continue to use it to read.

I am not a programmer so ai have no insight into what you just said.

As far as i can tell, i am logged in all the time. There have been times
when I get booted out, but I just log back on.

I have tried to post but as noted, the stuff never shows. The other
problem is often, the reply button is greyed out, so I cannot post.

I havenrCOt noticed a pattern when this occurs, but it seems recent, as I did post stuff successfully in the past.

Please keep up the good work. I will continue to use the program, and hope
    you get more subscribers.
