    Overview of Newsfish
    Newsfish is a specialized batch Usenet news reader that utilizes the Network >News Transfer Protocol (NNTP). It is designed to help users efficiently manage >and filter Usenet articles based on specific criteria.
    Key Features of Newsfish
    Batch Processing: Newsfish scans unread articles in bulk, allowing users to
    process large volumes of data at once.
    Filtering: Users can define specific criteria for filtering articles, ensuring
    that only relevant content is saved.
    Storage Format: The articles that match the user-defined criteria are saved in
    mbox-style files, which are easy to view and manage.
    How Newsfish Works
    Connection: Newsfish connects to Usenet servers using NNTP, which is the
    standard protocol for accessing Usenet.
    Scanning: It scans for unread articles and applies the user-defined filters to
    identify relevant content.
    Saving: Matching articles are saved in a structured format, making it
    convenient for users to access and read them later.
    This functionality makes Newsfish a valuable tool for users who want to >streamline their Usenet reading experience while ensuring they only receive >articles of interest.

    Dear Jesse Rehmer:

    Thanks for BlueWorld Hosting. I appreciate it very much! I am also
    grateful for this quoted article.

    Newsfish does not have a problem during most of the times when I use
    it (with BlueWorld Hosting (and all servers)). I do not normally use
    Newsfish for news:sci.electronics.design which is a very big group.

    So far as BlueWorld Hosting can see, is there still an active Newsfish
    session running on Insomnia247.NL since
    Thu Mar 19 07:53:21 PM CET 2026
    ?

    top says
    "1249073 glouces+ 20 0 9056 1632 1520 S 0.0 0.0
    0:20.21 newsfish"
    for this session since days ago: i.e. days ago its Insomnia247.NL CPU
    time was also 0:20.21 as it is today.

    I wonder if it is almost a zombie, or if it is downloading loads of
    headers which it filters out and it has not yet found anything to keep
    (this filter is for it to keep only
    * ^Date:.*2026
    whereas when I normally use Newsfish for small groups I normally try
    to download all of a group's articles (i.e.
    * .*
    )). Maybe it is less inefficient to download everything!

    Sorry if I am wasting your time or other resources!

    recommend using any popular newsreader (i use 40tude dialog) to download overview headers in "sci.electronics.design" from any popular newsserver
    with solid article retention: neodome (~787 days), netfront (~2159 days), paganini (~2486 days), csiph (~3962 days), blueworld (~44.x years), sort
    by date, and select only the articles you want to download . . . however,
    if there are many hundreds of articles or more to download then it would
    be wise to download them in smaller batches, might take hours, even days
    if you have thousands of articles that you expect to download, so before downloading anything from any newsgroup i would strongly recommend using filters/scoring on xover headers to minimize troll/spam before proceding, whitelisting non-robot/non-troll contributors also helps to be selective,
    that puts far less burden on the newsservers and makes usenet worthwhile

    root@spool1:/home/jesse # netstat -an | grep 141.95.28.213 root@spool1:/home/jesse #

    Maybe kill the process and restart it? Perhaps the filter pattern is a
    problem?

    So this is an update about good news about using excellent BlueWorld
    Hosting to download sci.electronics.design (i.e. a huge active
    group).

    A conclusion is that Newsfish is less slow when not filtering.

    Various viable hypotheses exist to explain why I had failed to archive
    from this group during a previous attempt, such as:
    * Newsfish filtering may be MORE INefficient than simply downloading
    an entire group;
    * some unknown problem on Insomnia 24/7 (that used to run Newsfish);
    * some unknown problem on BlueWorld Hosting;
    or
    * who knows?

    Jesse Rehmer reported that BlueWorld Hosting has not detected that
    Newsfish was still running on Insomnia 24/7. Insomnia 24/7 confirms
    that at approximately the same time Newsfish was not still running on
    it - because at approximately this time Insomnia 24/7 was becoming
    rebooted (and being assigned a new IP address).

    So I did not kill Newsfish because I had to start it again anyway!

    I started this new Newsfish job at circa
    Fri Apr 10 09:14:02 PM CEST 2026
    and it became finished at circa
    Fri Apr 17 12:55:40 PM CEST 2026
    so it took slightly more than 7 days.

    sci.electronics.design_attempt_on_BlueWorldHosting_on_April_10th_2026.mbox.txt is sized 2.6G.

    Alpine reports that sci.electronics.design_attempt_on_BlueWorldHosting_on_April_10th_2026.mbox.txt has 877,474 messages, whereas circa 5 hours later at circa
    Fri Apr 17 06:01:06 PM CEST 2026
    Alpine found 856,047 articles in the same group on the same server. I
    do tend to find that Alpine finds slightly fewer articles in a group
    than Newsfish does.

    Using Alpine to select only articles matching a particular string in
    their From: fields in this 2.6G mbox is slow. Spending a week to
    download 2.6G of a newsgroup when I am actually searching for only 2
    articles (both of which became composed during this year) is overkill,
    but Newsfish's filtering does not seem to speed things up much and
    could be slower than downloading an entire group. Cf. on January 7th,
    2026, Newsfish completed downloading 726K from a less active group
    from BlueWorld Hosting in circa 21 hours. Its filter is

    Sorry about that everyone... unexpected maintenance that has now completed.

    HEADS UP: I will be taking down the current archive and will be replacing it with a much deeper archive over the coming days. This operation could take several days to more than a week to complete.

    The result should be a (mostly) complete archive from 1981 forward.

    Hello! Thanks for informative posts.

    Are these results from 2026-04-04? Is Blue World working for you?

    I am still waiting for a newsfish job to save anything from Blue World
    since
    Thu Mar 19 07:53:21 PM CET 2026
    but it saved nothing so far!

    Its
    .newsfishrc
    is:

    sci.electronics.design:
    * ^Date:.*2026 /home/gloucester/coldstorage/Usenet/sci.electronics.design_downloaded_on_19t h_March_2026_dated_2026.mbox.txt

    since days ago.

    I'm not familiar with newsfish or how to support it, but I don't find any problems. That group has articles that were posted on today's date and it is visible in my newsreader.

    An earlier script failed when attempting .newsfishrc__attempt_to_download_Year-2026_articles_from_sci.electronics.design_during_circa_replacing_old_BWH_archive
    so Jesse Rehmer approved of attempting to download all of sci.electronics.design on April 10th, 2026 . . .

    I wonder if it is almost a zombie, or if it is downloading loads of

    whereas when I normally use Newsfish for small groups I normally try
    to download all of a group's articles (i.e.
    * .*

    I do not see any active connections from Insomnia247.NL:

    At circa 1 second before Fri Apr 10 08:45:09 PM CEST 2026, Insomnia

    "uptime

    So many theories exist as to why an earlier attempt to download
    articles from only the Year 2026 from sci.electronics.design
    failed. E.g. maybe Insomnia 24/7 was rebooted too soon.
