I tested mixmin by running a GROUP command over a secure connection,
and the output looked plausible. Shoulda tested more. Later I tried
to download the last 100 articles and the last 100 lines of overview,
and got nothing but error messages.

for read-only public nntp servers, there must be over a dozen that carry
the full plain text (about 36,800 currently active) newsgroups, and some
    that include alt.binaries.* (about 2,600 currently active) . . . servers
that allow posting, paganini (and w2n pugleaf, newsgrouper), but some of
the other popular servers may not carry as many newsgroups, and/or, they
might have issues with unpredictability, posting restrictions, etc. that
make them less feasible than the aforementioned and maybe several others

    p.s.
