    Cinco de Mayo isn't much of a holiday for most Mexicans. Outside
    of Puebla, it's barely acknowledged.
    It is fairly popular with those born in the U.S, regardless of
    racial or ethnic heritage. I often jokingly say, "Cinco de Mayo; that
    holiday where white people in the U.S. celebrate Mexico's victory over
    the French." Of course not only whites celebrate it in the U.S. But it
    is intended to emphasize how it's more important to people in the U.S.
    than in Mexico.
    I have no idea why Americans celebrate it more than Mexicans.
