• Tipping question?

    From Jerry Sauk@jerrysauk@hotmail.com to alt.food.fast-food on Tue Sep 8 12:34:51 2026
    From Newsgroup: alt.food.fast-food

Why is tipping asked for, at place's such as Subway and jimmy johns,
basically any sub shop, or coffee shop, but NOT at more traditional
    fast-food place's such as mcdonald's, taco bell, wendy's, arby's, etc..
    etc..

What make sub sandwich's so special that the employee's need a tip?

For the record, I believe, that NONE of these fast-food restournat's should have tipping.

Tipping should be, ONLY a reward for fast service at a non-fast-food restounrat such as a sit-down restounrat or pizza delivery. Even so, it
must be clear that this is OPTIONAL. It is NOT the customer's
responsibiolit yto pay the waitress's wages.

Because they are custom-making the sandwich you ordered right there.

Other fast food places are grabbing burgers etc. from under the heat
    lamps.

Think before you post, Jenny. For once.

    Tips are always optional.

What do you gain by LYING and claiming it is not? We know you
refuse to tip, since it cuts into your $120 ($160 if you get Fourth
Meal) a day fast food addiction. You won't answer, of course, if you
don't run away from the TRUTH you consistently PROVE you really do
HATE, you will add more lies, as demanded by your mental illness.
I will state that companies should pay the employees fairly. It
would likely mean another increase in fast food prices (which have
gotten out of control since Trump took office). But no one would have
    to bother with tipping.
The benefit of tipping, when done in cash, is that the person can
declare whatever amount he or she wishes for purposes of tax
liability. This probably doesn't carry over to debit/credit card
    tipping.

The short version, Tony: tipping culture at sub shops and coffee shops
didnAt evolve from oservice quality,o it evolved from payment structure
and point-of-sale design. ThatAs why it feels inconsistent u because it
    is.

    HereAs the clear breakdown.

?? Why sub shops and coffee shops ask for tips
These places almost always use counter-service POS tablets (Square,
    Clover, Toast, etc.). Those systems:

default to showing a tip screen

push owners to enable tipping because it lowers their labor cost

frame tipping as onormalo even when the job isnAt tip-based

Employees at these shops often get:

lower base wages than traditional fast-food

    no drive-thru bonuses

    no corporate wage standardization

    no guaranteed raises

So the owners lean on tipping to compensate.

ItAs not that the work is ospecial.o
ItAs that the business model is different.

?? Why McDonaldAs, Taco Bell, WendyAs, ArbyAs, etc. donAt ask for tips Corporate fast-food chains:

forbid tipping prompts in their POS systems

    pay standardized wages across franchises

have strict labor policies and HR compliance rules

donAt want the PR nightmare of oMcDonaldAs workers rely on tips nowo

    They also rely heavily on:

    drive-thru throughput

    speed metrics

    corporate-mandated pay structures

Tipping would interfere with their workflow and brand identity.

So they simply donAt allow it.

? Coffee shops fall into the same category as sub shops
    Independent or semi-independent coffee shops:

use the same tablet POS systems

    have similar wage structures

rely on tips to retain staff

culturally overlap with cafo tipping norms

    Starbucks is the hybrid case:
Corporate stores donAt ask at the counter, but the app has optional
    tipping because itAs controlled centrally.

?? Your position is consistent u and historically accurate
YouAre basically describing the traditional American tipping norm:

    Sit-down restaurants ? tipping expected

    Delivery ? tipping expected

Counter service / fast food ? tipping not expected

That was the standard for decades.

The only reason it changed is because POS tablets normalized tipping
prompts everywhere, even where tipping was never part of the job.

YouAre not imagining the creep u itAs real.

    ?? The real problem
Tipping prompts at fast-casual counters arenAt about service.
    TheyAre about:

    shifting labor costs onto customers

    exploiting social pressure

using interface design to extract extra revenue

    ItAs not about orewarding service.o
ItAs about businesses offloading payroll responsibility.

It's fairly simple. They don't ask for them because they won't get them.
For example, at Beto's, an economy burrito store, the guy behind the
counter reaches out and flashes past the tip screen for you so as to not
    waste time.

Because they are custom-making the sandwich you ordered right there.

How is that unlike mcdonald's or taco bell?

McDonald s and Taco Bell are made in advance and taste like shit.

That's great, but it wasn't my question. My question WAS, why does sub and coffee shop's ask for tips, when traditional fat-food like mcdonald's and taco bell DOESN'T.

They obviously both CAN ask for tips, so your logic is invalid.

    Different things.

What do you gain by LYING and claiming it is not? We know you

don't run away from the TRUTH you consistently PROVE you really do
HATE, you will add more lies, as demanded by your mental illness.

That's great, but it wasn't my question.

Way to do EXACTLY as I predicted. You lied, as demanded by your
    mental illness.
BTW, outside of your lying, that is EXACTLY your question. And I
    answered it.
