Paul Linnman, the on-camera reporter, wrote a book published in 2003,
about his career including behind-the-scenes glimpses about the whale
    story:

"The Exploding Whale: And Other Remarkable Stories from the Evening News"

Elsewhere in the book Linnman relates the story of the "Pull-Tab King"
of Coos Bay as straight news, with nary trace of debunking.

So in his book Linnman sets the record straight that the exploding whale
story was for real, but then turns around and propagates a different
    urban legend.
