WhatrCOs left of Zilog Corp started winding down production of its most successful and longest-lived product family two years ago.
But there is still a lot of affection for the old Z80 CPU as a
retrocomputing classic, and now a hardware hobbyist has stepped into
the breach by offering open-source plans for a fully-compatible
replacement chip, as well as an operation to sell manufactured parts.
130nm feature size is far from cutting-edge these days, but it does
allow the chip to be clocked at up to 50MHz, versus the 4MHz speed of
the original part.
