The myth that Jabba the Hut was originally human... it began
circulating after deleted footage was revealed showing an actor, his
head showing, in a suit playing the role of Jabba the Hut.
Most know this story, but for those who do not...
Jabba was initially intended to appear in A New Hope, where he would
have a scene with Han Solo. Although this sequence was one of many
deleted scenes, it was reintroduced in the 1997 special editions of
the original trilogy. In these editions, audiences saw Han interacting
with a CGI Jabba the Hutt.
However, in the original scene, Jabba was portrayed by a human actor
named Declan Mulholland. Given Jabba's iconic status as one of the
most recognizable aliens in Star Wars, many viewers have wondered why
he was originally depicted as a human.
Initially, Mulholland was intended to serve as a stand-in for a
non-human Jabba the Hutt, with the plan to later overlay his
performance with a new creature using a matte process. However, Lucas
faced constraints in terms of time, budget, and technical
capabilities, ultimately resulting in the scene being abandoned for
the final version of the film.
Therefore, Jabba the Hut was never human or intended to have the
appearance of a human.
