• Did I just discover a law of usenet spam?

    Hello usenet fans,

Recently I configured my leafnode to discard all messages that are cross-posted to more than 3 groups, and lo and behold! The amount of spam
    has almost disappeared.

Could this be a discovered "law of usenet"?

"The more cross-posts, the less the value of the message."

    Maybe?

    Best regards,
    Daniel

    Hello floffy,

Based on a quick look I'm afraid I can't find anything for windows. I
think if your really like that setup, maybe a linux VM would be the best
    way forward?

That way, if windows is your daily driver, you could just spin up
virtualbox with a linux on it and you should be ready to roll as long as
the right software is in the repositories.

If you never have used linux this might not be the best idea though.

    Best regards,
    Daniel

Isn't that what most people filter out? It's really rare for a message
with more than three groups in to have anything of value.
It used to be that combined with filtering Google Groups that was an
easy way to keep your groups readable.

I don't know, but I agree with you. Adding that filter has made an
enormous difference. No more fiddling around with killfiles, I just delete everything with more than 3 groups and the spam has decreased a lot.

    I wouldn't call it a law.

More something that's long been known by many Usenetizens.

"The more cross-posts, the less the value of the message."

    Maybe?

The more newsgroups that a message is posted to, the less likely it is
    to be on topic.

The rare exception to that is someone asking something like "I don't
know where to post this, so I'm asking <here>, <here>, and <here>. I've
set followups to <here>." type thing.

I have to admit I actually post in various newsgroups if something is in
fact of interest in multiple ones. Although I limit myself to 3 (because
well, if I didn't my own spam filter would already get rid of it)

    *nod*

Contrary to popular belief, there are legitimate reasons to post to
multiple newsgroups. It's just that those legitimate reasons are far
    and few in between.
