Hello usenet fans,
Recently I configured my leafnode to discard all messages that are >cross-posted to more than 3 groups, and lo and behold! The amount of spam >has almost disappeared.
Could this be a discovered "law of usenet"?
"The more cross-posts, the less the value of the message."
Maybe?
Best regards,
Daniel

Hello usenet fans,

spam has almost disappeared.

Isn't that what most people filter out? It's really rare for a message with more than three groups in to have anything of value.
It used to be that combined with filtering Google Groups that was an easy way
to keep your groups readable.

I wouldn't call it a law.
More something that's long been known by many Usenetizens.
"The more cross-posts, the less the value of the message."
Maybe?
The more newsgroups that a message is posted to, the less likely it is
to be on topic.
The rare exception to that is someone asking something like "I don't
know where to post this, so I'm asking <here>, <here>, and <here>.-a I've set followups to <here>." type thing.
I have to admit I actually post in various newsgroups if something is in fact of interest in multiple ones. Although I limit myself to 3 (because well, if I didn't my own spam filter would already get rid of it)
