It's mindboggling there is a subreddit 'ClassicUsenet'. I mean, why
aren't they posting /here/, on Usenet?

Some people literally don't know it still exists. Others know it's out
there somewhere but assume it's buried in bot spam.

Most people don't even know that it ever existed, let alone still exists!

Well, the people posting on /r/ClassicUsenet probably knew about it at
    some point. :-)

True. I remember when AOL Instant Messenger came out and one of my
    coworkers was excitedly telling about.

them: "You can chat with some one in real time!"
    me: "Like IRC."
them: "But you can send files too!"
    me: "Like IRC."
them: "No, but you can join groups for group chats!"
    me: "Like IRC."

I know IRC != usenet, but this conversation happened in 1998.

Actually, I've been happy to see that usenet and IRC seem to be making a
bit of a comeback with all of the popularity of retro gaming and
    computing on the rise.

Yeah, I've spent *years* pushing Usenet as an absolutely perfect way for retro-computing enthusiasts to actually get some meaningful online use out
of their machines - I'm posting from a vintage Mac running OS9, for
example - but there was always relatively little interest. I'll keep
mentioning it wherever I see a retrocomputer conversation happening,
    though!

That is a great idea which I'm adopting.
