• Error message at a company's website--not just in Firefox

    From Jo-Anne@Jo-Anne@nowhere.com to alt.comp.software.firefox on Thu Apr 16 02:56:17 2026
    From Newsgroup: alt.comp.software.seamonk

I've been unable to open any webpage at the website for the company Wendy's Walkers. I called, and
the company says everything is fine. The home page www.wendyswalkers.com gives me a 404 [4OH!4]
error message. If I click on any link on the page, I get "The page cannot be found" and suggestions
for the user and for support personnel.

I know this is more than a Firefox issue, because I've also unsuccessfully tried Opera, Edge, and
Vivaldi on my Windows 10 computer and Safari on my iPad (I cleared the cache in Safari to see if
that would work); but I'm hoping someone here can help.

Are others able to reach the home page and the links within it?

In my SeaMonkey Suite, I clicked your link, Jo-Anne, then clicked on 'Wheelchairs' and noticed that the "Karman Lightweight Transporter with
Hand Brakes (LT-1000HB)" had a List Price of $269.00 but their price was $272.00

    Interesting Marketing strategy!! ;-P

Yes, I can connect to their website.

My web browser (previously Firefox, now Edge) are configured to purge
ALL locally cached data on exit. That means browsing history, cached
images, cookies, site preferences, etc are cleared on exit.

Sometimes a site changes the format it expects for its data it saves in
its cookies (on your host). Same for other cached data: they change it
on their end which no longer matches your end. Flush all the locally
cached data (except passwords) in the web browser, and retry the
    website.

I don't leave my web browser loaded. I use it, and exit it. Since it
purges all its locally cached data on its exit, I don't run into the
above data mismatch. However, it does means losing some conveniences.
Instead of enabling the purge-on-exit option, for now just try purging
all locally cached data just once, exit the web browser, and reload to
    retry.

If that doesn't help, disable all your add-ons, including any
adblockers. When I visiting, I had Adguard Adblocker enabled (a bit
more robust than other Manifest v3 add-on adblockers, like uBlock Origin
Lite), and all of its blocklists enabled. However, if you're using an adblocker, could be it is more aggressive, and the site pukes on its
lack of logic to detect availability of objects before trying to use
them instead of telling you they might be blocking you because you use
    an adblocker.

    Works fine from my end.

It could be DNS problem having outdated site domain IP address.
If this is the case, clearing the DNS cache and/or changing DNS, should
    resolve the problem.

Startpage is hiding your IP address. Opera can do that too, if you
    switch on VPN.

It might be you are in a country which the website has blocked, or there

You or your country is blacklisted.

JoAnne is in the U.S, and cannot connect (except by using a VPN, but no
mention in which country was the exit node from the VPN). The VPN may
not identify where is its exit node at the time, but a geoIP on whatever
exit node's IP address might show where the VPN user is exiting.

I'm also in the U.S. (midwest), and have no problem connecting. If blacklisting is involved by the website, seems more likely Jo-Anne's
currently assigned IP address might be the problem. Could be she is on
    a blacklist.

Releasing the current IP binding, and getting a new one could give
Jo-Anne a new IP address to try.

    ipconfig /release all
    ipconfig /release6 all
    ipconfig /flushdns
    ipconfig /renew
    ipconfig /renew6

Rather than enter the above in an admin command shell, restarting
Windows might be easier. However, if JoAnne uses a NAT router (either separately in her intranet, or embedded in a cable/DSL modem), changing
her local (intranet) IP address of her computer on the LAN-side of the cable/DSL model won't change the WAN-side address of a cable/DSL modem.
Most consumer modems, especially those leased from an ISP, don't have a
shell in which to run similar commands. By default, they are configured
for dynamic IP addressing assigned by the upstream DHCP server (which is
at the ISP), so restarting the modem may give a new IP address to try.
If Jo-Anne gets a static IP address from Jo-Anne's ISP's DHCP server
(might cost more, or be included in Jo-Anne's service tier), call the
ISP to get a different static IP address. However, I've not seen fixed
IP addressed get blacklisted except by the current assignee of a fixed
IP address, but it is possible to get assigned a previously abused IP
address when assigned dynamic IP addresses. Although a user may get the
same IP address across multiple expirations, that's because the ISP
reassigned the same one from their IP pool. If the unbind is more than
3 days ago from when last active (you got the IP bind, it expired, and eventually you disconnect or unpower), you can get a different IP
address. Depends on how long the ISP's DHCP server decides to dole out
a different IP address after an unbind to dole out the same or different
    IP address.

Works for me. You must have scared them into fixing it.

    BTW, I love your fabric.

I know this is more than a Firefox issue, because I've also unsuccessfully tried Opera, Edge, and

Are others able to reach the home page and the links within it?

It could be DNS problem having outdated site domain IP address. If
this is the case, clearing the DNS cache and/or changing DNS, should
    resolve the problem.

Sometimes a site changes the format it expects for its data it saves

    retry the website.

This is easily tested without actually having to throw away your
session cookies: just open a private-browsing window and see if that

Odd. I tried overriding the DNS by manually adding the domain entry to point both IP addresses one at a time and test it. Everything works fine. Both IP addresses host a web server which contain the same site.

If you have browser extension(s), have you tried disabling them, or use
    other browser?

Also, is the URL still pointing to the correct one, when you get the 404
    erro page?
