• How do I find my current Firefox release number?

    From Jo-Anne@Jo-Anne@nowhere.com to alt.comp.software.firefox on Sun Mar 29 16:27:56 2026
    From Newsgroup: alt.comp.software.seamonk

Related to my earlier question about possible Firefox malware, I checked "About Firefox" and found
the only release number there to be the one I was supposed to update to. In the past, "About" also
showed the release number I was on. Is there a way to see the release number I'm currently on?

Or is the release number shown the one I already have? Which would mean Firefox isn't showing me the
release number I'll get when I update...

You must have blocked updates using the policies.json file. These
newsgroups are notorious for making suggestions without considering the consequences, especially when the user is not very tech-savvy.

Help >> About window will tell you if you have blocked updates. It
normally says "Updates disabled by your organisation."

You should really be using version 140.9.0esr (64 bit) but if you are
still using Windows 7 then don't bother because Mozilla has given up on
    those users!

My linux 149.0 says "Firefox is being updated by another instance"

    gglAIov says:
The "Firefox is being updated by another instance"
error occurs when multiple Firefox profiles or instances are running simultaneously, causing a conflict because only one can manage
updates. To fix this, close all Firefox windows and restart it, or
ensure only one profile is active.

    ... but -1- I don't understand that; and -2- just closing, restarting,
logging out, doesn't remedy the condition.

I'm not surprised, given that you're using either Linux Mint or Ubuntu.
These operating systems have their own update mechanisms from the
official repository. However, if you uninstall Firefox from the system
and reinstall it using DEB files downloaded from the official Mozilla
website, you will bypass the update mechanism and be able to control the timing and method of updates.

Let me know if you want to do this, but 149.0 isn't that outdated.

Linux Mint's Update Manager preferences also allows you to choose what
to do with updates. You can install automatically or just get notified
and you choose if/when to update. You can also choose to block specific packages if you don't want a particular update. I tend to use Deb files
only if LM doesn't have a particular piece of software I want to use
(such as only having a Flatpak version), or it's a very old version in
the LM repo and hasn't been updated for a long time.

Let me know if you want to do this, but 149.0 isn't that outdated.

The above report isn't about my 'daily driver' LM, but a particular
strategy I employed to most easily get a 'fresh' 149.0 because I wanted
to see its operation of vpn/proxy.

I booted a live Sparky rolling, which means that it is based on Debian testing. I can't remember exactly was was the v. of default Ffx, but in
its repo/s were both a 'Sparky' Ffx and a Moz ffx (newest) which Moz was 149.0. That's how I acquired 149.0 from the repo/s; BUT it did NOT have
    the vpn/proxy.

I tho't I might be able to get some kind of 'updated' 149.x.x, say
149.0.a or whatever; meanwhile, because of the above msg, I decided to completely uninstall the 'original' default Ffx 14x so its own profile
could not trigger the above msg in the newest Moz Ffx.

In any case, I couldn't get rid of that 'refusal' to update and I
couldn't get a Ffx 149.0 w/ vpn/proxy in spite of the fact that I'm in
    the .us.

Now I'm thinking that 'uninstalling' the default Ffx might not be 'good enough' -- maybe I should delete its profile as a separate operation.

My FF has an "Update to ...." highlighted box in the "About" pop-up
window with a release number and, on the line below that box, it tells
    me what release I'm on.

The latter bit is easy to miss. :)

Hey, that's sort of fun. I get thousands of entries including these:

    extensions.lastPlatformVersion 115.29.0 extensions.skype_toolbar.version 6.10.0.13089 extensions.webExtensionsMinPlatformVersion 42.0a1 extensions.{ccccc-cccc-47ec-a1f4-cccccccccc}.sdk.version 6.3.1 gecko.handlerService.defaultHandlersVersion 1 general.document_open_conversion_depth_limit 20 gfx-shader-check.build-version 20251006123207

I suspect that the last one parses to a date and time down to the
    nearest second?

    Cool, but pretty useless. :)

    J.

P.S. I've got Skype? Or I *had* Skype once and its bits have been
carried over? Also, I munged one for reasons of paranoia and just to
wind up anyone who cares. :)

    Oh, I'm *sane*!

    sanity-test.version 20251006123207

Or I was, once, last year.
