• Firefox update: version 155

    From John C.@r9jmg0@yahoo.com to alt.comp.software.firefox on Wed Sep 2 05:27:40 2026
    From Newsgroup: alt.comp.software.firefox

    Be forewarned.

    https://www.firefox.com/en-US/firefox/155.0/releasenotes/?ref=itsfoss.com

I, for one, will be disabling FF updates until a .1 is released. Getting
sick and tired of all the major paradigm shifts and having to squander
time finding kludges and alternatives for my extensions.

And ultimately, I'm not looking forward to the new, rounded corners
    "Nova" interface.

I'm not looking anywhere for rounded corners, or any other pointless
    frippery.

I really can't see the point of wasting coding time and energy for just
    arty stuff. :-(

They'd be more useful getting to grips with coding stuff, like making Tab positioning configurable.

I hope we get advanced warning before this new interface excrement drops

Well, I changed my mind and decided to allow the update. It didn't
disable any of my extensions, so that's good. It left my tab bar's
position alone (I like mine right above the website content), so that
    was also good.

However, it did round the corners of tabs and fields, but that wasn't as
big an issue as I expected.

Mozilla has "improved" containers, but that's a feature I find
    completely useless.

I expect that, as usual with a non-decimal update, there will be some
bugs that will be corrected in a decimal update. However, at this point
    I haven't experienced any.

+1. As unpopular as their actions are regarding the position of the tab
bar, you would definitely think they'd make it an option. At least with
this update they seem to have avoided disregarding the userChrome.css file.

Well, 155 seems to be a step in the direction of Nova because it has a
    lot of rounded stuff.

I'm using one browser for personal and work activities, containers are super-cool when you have to use different accounts on one site, for example, Github or gmail.

Also, firefox is the only mainstream browser that supports that, chromium-based ones using different concept with "users" which isn't actually usable in real life.

In the past, I actually liked rounded corners on the tabs. They really

I really don't see much to be gained by the devs doing that.

didn't waste any space and in my mind, they looked like the tabs on
    physical file folders.

.... which are usually sticking up from the TOP of the physical file
    folders.

So WHY does everyone seem to want them on the Bottom, now??#

It's just confusing terminology. Tabs on the "bottom" means tabs beneath
all the top taskbars, so in effect they really are like tabs on physical
file holders. Think of the open webpage as the physical file you're
interested in. The tab should be attached to that directly; if it was a
tab and physical file you would not like to have several pieces of
irrelevant paper or card in between.

It gets even more confusing with browsers like Vivaldi where tabs on the bottom really do mean at the bottom of the open window (ie where the
    status bar is)!

Yes, you couldn't have been clearer. Old age and CRS is getting to me.

I think knuttle was talking about getting rid of the rounded corners.

In the past, I actually liked rounded corners on the tabs. They really
didn't waste any space and in my mind, they looked like the tabs on
    physical file folders.

However, with the new "Project Nova" UI changes, rounded corners will be
in a lot more places. Although that doesn't seem like a big deal to me,
I really don't see much to be gained by the devs doing that.

KNUTTLE was talking specifically about keeping the tabs on the bottom to identify the window that it is related to.-a-a I have no other important changes in the userchrome file.

Thanks for the correction. I misunderstood.

Not everyone, just enough that it should be an option.

Yes, I've also noticed this since Vivaldi is my second browser.

So, hang on, in my Firefox Browser screen I have ....
    1. A line of tabs telling me what is on each tab.
    2. Back, Forward, Re-load arrowheads then the address of the web page
    I'm looking at.
    3. I'm into my Yahoo mail screen with Home, Mail, News, Finance, Sport, etc., tabs.
    4. The Yahoo Mail Search line
    5. Stuff With-in the Yahoo-mail account.

If I open a second tab, say to the Aus Stock Exchange, https://www.asx.com.au/markets/company/EVN, the set-up is, basically,
the same, except I've get a second Tab on the top line of the screen.

So what do people want to change with this 'Tabs on the "bottom" means

    4, 5.

    I'd want 2, 1, 3, 4, 5. However, I don't see why you are bringing 4 and
5 into the argument. They are supplementary to what the browser does -
the only important point is that "1" is /directly/ above the browser
window with 3, 4, and 5 on it (or whatever else there is on any other
tab if you select that for viewing), and below "2".

    Gotta laugh!

IIRC. Here in the UK we officially went decimal in 1971, but now 55 years
later though in day to day use we use Decimal, but in our heads and
general chit chat we still use Imperial.

    I often still talk about boards being 8 x 4 feet (2.440 x 1.220 metric) or timber sizes being 4 x 2 inches (100 x 50 mm), or cement in half a Cwt

In my minds eye I can visualise an 8 x 4 board, but 2.440 x 1.220 has no
