Is any one working on the code to move the tabs to the bottom so they
are associated with the open windows.

After every new version we have to put up with the tabs in the
inconvenient location until the patch is published to put the tabs back
    in the proper location.

Is there any indication of the version number under which this will be released? So I don't accidentally updated to that version.

I doubt it. From wonky memory, the address and tab bars were switched
with 'Australis'... and that was released in 2014.

After every new version we have to put up with the tabs in the
inconvenient location until the patch is published to put the tabs back

"Every new version" might be an exaggeration. Once I discovered how
to set up userChrome.css and found a suggestion for 'tabs on bottom',
that code has held, though other fiddling (by me) did upset it a year
or so back. Finding MrOtherGuy's csshacks on Github quickly resolved
    the issue.

One could install the ESR (Extended Support Release) version of Firefox.
Then feature updates (major version updates) would only be once a year. <https://firefox-admin-docs.mozilla.org/guides/firefox-channels/>

There is a 3-month period with security updates to both old and new
major ESR versions. (This will give knuttle time to find a patch to put
the tabs rCLbackrCY where no other major browser puts them.)

Release dates are published in advance. <https://whattrainisitnow.com/calendar/>

It seems to be something that no devs want for reasons known best to themselves. I have a userChrome.css file in my (default)/chrome folder
to deal with this. That is, until the devs deactivate css files. :-(

You might be interested to know that in the "infinitely customisable"
Vivaldi browser, tabs on the bottom - where they should be - are also
not an option! Once again, a css file is required to put them there.

And on Android, Samsung Internet very recently fell into line as well.
