• When do you usually update your non-ESR Firefox web browser(s)?

    From ant@ant@zimage.comANT (Ant) to alt.comp.software.firefox on Mon Jul 20 01:02:43 2026
    From Newsgroup: alt.comp.software.firefox

Do you update right away? Wait a few hours, days, or weeks? I think I am
going to delay my immediate updates by a few days for now on since
Mozilla keeps releasing too many updates (e.g., v152.0.x) these days.
Yes, I can get and use ESR but I want the newer features and not right
away. I want to wait a little bit before doing upgrades.

Thank you for reading and hopefully answering. :)

I update when available. In the many years I have used FireFox I have
only regreted it a couple of times and all had to do when the tabs
toolbar was moved above the address away from the page that it was
    associated with.

    My personal machine, I usually take releases straight away;

Here, also a very long time user of Firefox, I update when I get the auto message that an update is available.

I have "Check for updates, but choose when to install." ticked On.

My main PITA as knuttle notes, is when they do something that FU., my preference of having the Tabs below the toolbars. :-/

Wasting time again, fiddling with the chrome - userChrome.css file to get
    it back below again.

I see in the Configs, they've added the ability to have Vertical tabs,
which as far as I'm concerned is a waste of coding space.

Why don't they just add a setting for Tabs below the tool bars...
    FW... (That's an expletive).

Every few years, but nearly a decade for Thunderbird. Previous updates eliminated valuable features in exchange for nothing that I found better
than what I'd lost. Running FF 150 and TB 139 right now. Updated both unwillingly and have no plans to update again without some sort of
    compulsion.

Monitors are wide. How can you NOT put the tabs at the side? We don't
need all that horizontal space for most uses and if you have ~30 tabs
you can't read the titles unless they're at the side.

Usually when I see a reminder on BluesNews (a gaming website) that
a new version is available ;-)

It's usually before Firefox itself nags me that the update is available.

I'm not really that obsessed with updates, so if I miss a reminder
I don't really go out of my way to check, but since the upgrade process
is so seamless these days, it's usually no bother to do so.

I don't update FFx. I update the system, and sometimes, that includes

My Monitor is, maybe, 15 inches wide and 10 inches high (but don't quote

If I have 30 tabs across the bottom (not gunna happen!), each tab would
be about half an inch wide. If I had 30 tabs down a side, each tab would
be about a third of an inch deep.

Or does putting them down a side allow for multiple columns .... just as
I think you can have multiply rows across the bottom.

You misunderstand, the tab contents are full height of the firefox
window, it's just a vertical list of tab titles down one edge (I refer
right hand side) and it scrolls vertically when you have lots of tabs,
you can adjust the width so the titles are not truncated to death.

Try it, you might like it ...

I rarely have more then, maybe, six tabs open, so don't see the

Perhaps things are different with laptops, but I have a 27" monitor and
crappy vision. I use my laptop only when I have to. BUT... Since you
can scroll the list of tabs (and indentations and collapses are
possible) there's no need for more than one column. I rarely have more
than 30 tabs (which will fit without scrolling) and that's just because
    I didn't close some when I was done. Chrome has vertical-tab add-ons,
but they're not all that functional while being annoying, so I put up
with the horizontal ones -- I rarely need to use Chrome anyway, so it's
    not that big a nuisance.

FF offers a native vertical-tab option now, but I haven't tried it. I've
spent a lot of time tweaking my Tree Tabs extension and don't want to
take a chance that might screw it up.

    Sorry! WHAT??

My Monitor is, maybe, 15 inches wide and 10 inches high (but don't quote >>> me). (I have my SM Browser screen set to about 12 inches wide but
Mail&News and IRC screens set to about 10 inches wide.)

I've got a 21" ASUS VS247 in front of me and on my left a 19" Acer
AL1916W. You need to increase your real estate. ;-)

Those of us who started out with a 9" b&w monitor are SOOOOO glad things improved.
WHO?? ME?? Nah, what I've got (HP All-in-One Desktop 24-cr0xxx) is WWWAAAAYYYY more than enough for my purposes .... even when I've got
(Three Tab) SM, FF and LibreOffice open (and that's about as heavy as my Workload gets!! ;-) )
My son bought a 45" hi-def TV to use as a monitor. I envy that he has
little windows open (mostly a lot of xterms) for everything he's doing
without shifting screens (I have 4 virtual screens that I can flip
between just by moving my mouse to the appropriate edge) but the need to constantly keep moving my head around is off-putting. He tried to force
a 33" on me, but that was too big.

I have TB in one screen, FF in another, sometimes Chrome in the third,
and the 4th is open for whatever other thing -- mostly Picasa -- that I
might want to do. NOT full-screen, I want the option to move things
around and resize on the fly. I pop up xterms as needed. Life is good.

I've got a tower* (or two). The one I'm using now has no CD/DVD (the old
one has) and it's got an NVMe SSD and 2 SATA SDD. I'm using a cordless
    keyboard and cordless mouse.

They've given me a laptop to use as a volunteer and another to play with

Should have gotten a smaller one and even though I'm savvy enough to
move the CD/DVD from the old tower to his one I can't be bothered. The
power supply of the Corsair is situated at the bottom and the CD/DVD has

One of the bigger problems I notice with those is the lack of hover and tooltips. The only way to find out what a "button" does is to press it,

I wasn't sure whether Bev distinguished "real" keyboards to be clacky,
and real mice to not be trackpads?

Yes and yes, although keyboard preferences are pretty personal. I tried
every one Micro Center had and didn't like any of them. Clacky with
some sort of light so I can see the number keys in super-dim light would
be nice, but haven't seen anything yet that would make me happy.
I have several IBM model-M keyboards, but nowadays I like to have a
Windows key available, so use a TKL mechanical keyboard instead, my
    rodent has no tail.
Logitech tailless rodents rule, but they eventually die. No idea
how/why, but they do. Takes several years. Tails are good if you are
clumsy and knock the poor baby off the table onto the floor a lot, but
    they're otherwise a nuisance. The first time I saw a trackpad (Fry's,
El Segundo) I thought they were a really slick idea. When I actually
had to use one my opinion changed considerably.

    I miss Fry's.

My previous Model M was a 1988 model and I still cry when I remember
spilling coffee into it. Current one is 1992 and I'm really careful
about coffee. I have maybe 2 more.

I can still use the win7 if I need it, but I don't.

    I do here...
Tower case, 2 Hard drives one of which is partitioned into 2 drives, and a DVD drive.
Real mouse, real keyboard and a real monitor that in my dotage I can read, albeit with reading glasses. ;-)

Real software that's easy to navigate because it has proper menus.

YESSSS to all that. Although I really don't like hierarchical menus for
stuff I don't use regularly -- trying to guess where a stranger wanted
to put a particular item is maddening. GIMP is about the best example
    of what I hate.
As for Tablets and Smart phones... Don't get me started... :-/

Good for travel or emergencies. Last trip (road trip, Utah big circle)
we took I didn't bother with the laptop, the tablet was good enough.
Daughter made the next night's reservation on her phone, though -- I
would definitely have wanted a real computer to do that.
