    I once saw a schematic for a radio with two tuners. You tuned one
    of them to the strongest local station, whose signal was rectified
    and used to drive an amplifier for the other tuner, that tuned the
    station you actually wanted to listen to. Still no battery.

    You need a high enough voltage at the detector (crystal).

    I had one that was a little more advanced. One transistor (AF amp, so you still don't get many stations). Power came from a lemon.
