I keep my checkbook in an Excel spreadsheet. It goes back something
like 20 years and now has something over 17,000 rows. Recently, I have
been unable to set "Automatically calculate formulas" in that sheet.
In other sheets it's not a problem, but in that one, I can find and
set the option, but when I close the options dialog, it's instantly
set back to "Manual". (That applies to other sheets in that workbook
too, although they are only 50 to 100 rows.)

I'm wondering if the number of rows in the sheet has exceeded some
limit. Does any body have a clue?

Which format do you save your file as? Some really old .xls formats only >allow 16k rows. Save it as an .xlsx to be sure you're not hitting any
    limits.

Thanks for all of the responses. So far, nothing works.

You're right, the "Manual" setting affrects the entire workbook, no
    sheets will calculate automatically.

The workbook is saved in xlsx format.

Saving as xlsb, and using that in a new session does not fix the
problem, I still can't set automatic calculation.

Copying everything and pasting into a new workbook loses all the
    formulas.

    So I'm still stuck.

It is supposed to allow your first document, to control the mode.
Maybe you can open one automatic document first, then open the affected
one and set it to automatic, save, exit the program, then start up
again using only the affected one.

    https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/troubleshoot/microsoft-365-apps/excel/current-mode-of-calculation

While I'd like to suggest a lateral move between Excel and LibreOffice Calc and back,
that could cause as many problems as it solves. And may not be a good
    usage of your time.

Close every Excel window. Make a copy of the file and rename the copy
from, for example: Checkbook2.xlsx to: Checkbook2.zip. Then open the ZIP
and look under xl for a file called workbook.xml. That file contains the workbook's calculation settings. Look for something like:
    <calcPr calcMode="manual"
If it's set to "manual" then in a plain-text editor such as Notepad
    change it to:
    <calcPr calcMode="auto"
Do not change or remove the other attributes on that element.
Save the modified workbook.xml back into the ZIP, preserving its
location and filename. Rename the ZIP back to .xlsx. Open it in Excel.

    Excel 97-2003
    65,536 (2-|rU|)

    Excel 2007+
    1,048,576 (2-#rU#)

    Excel 95

Purposely left out Excel 95, even though your comment was
accurate('really old xls formats etc.) since the op clearly stated in
the subject that Excel 2007 was the product in use and use of
xls(instead of xlsx) format in 2007 would be 65,536 (2-|rU|)

True. Just trying to come up with ideas. It is possible to save in an older version. Moot anyway as OP has confirmed xlsx

Yeah, I tried that. It opened just fifne in Calc, except that the
formulas would not autocalculate. I couldn't find where Calc hides the autocalculate setting.

    "AutoCalculate

Automatically recalculates all formulas in the document.

All cells are recalculated after a sheet cell has been modified.
Any charts in the sheet will also be refreshed.

If the AutoCalculate function is activated, the Recalculate function F9 is not available.

    From the menu bar:

Choose Data - Calculate - AutoCalculate

Agreed(yes, possible to save in older version).
:) - does take some effort(at least in current M365 and Office perpetual(2024) and probably earlier 97-2021 versions) - Use 'Save As'
method and drill down in the format save options to Excel 5.0/95 Workbook(.xls) or having previously configured Excel to use that 'old'
format as the default file save option.
