• Microsoft has zero incentive or desire to fix Windows

    Interesting essay:
    Quote:
    Eric S. Raymond

Microsoft will never fix Windows, because the features that enrage
users in Windows 11 are exactly the ones that generate recurring
revenue and market control. That is exactly *why* they enrage users!

Yes, you'll get reversals of some idiotic user interface decisions.
You'll get some speed tweaks. These will be loudly hyped in hopes that
they distract you from what you'll never get.

Don't take my word for this, look at what Microsoft is hyping as fixes
in their reform program and Windows 12. Do they say a word about no
longer requiring a Microsoft account to do a local installation? Or
about removing the repeating nag prompts for OneDrive? Do they make
any promises to end the advertising spam?

No. And they won't. Because that's where the money is. Windows now
exists to broker your eyeballs to third parties and upsell you into
    Microsoft subscription services.

    ...
    end quote.

I've been intending to switch to Linux anyway.

Well, actually they *do*. Recently some Microsoft hot-shot said
exactly that. As it's a total non-issue, I did not keep a note of the reference, so sue me.

    Or
about removing the repeating nag prompts for OneDrive? Do they make
any promises to end the advertising spam?

These two go away when the first (non-)'problem' is 'solved'.

No. And they won't. Because that's where the money is. Windows now

Well, *my* eyeballs don't see *any* such ads. As I mentioned before, I
do not een get *desired* information from Microsoft, like information on
what's fixed/new in their monthly updates. How about *them* apples? Oops.
(Yes, of course I know how to get said missing information.)

The pronouncements by Microsoft, have nothing to do with rational thought. That's why commenters on Tomshardware are doing their best
    impressions of "Words..." .

This is like a farmer telling you he has put extra lipstick on the pig.

And no, I don't think anyone is sitting around, waiting for a miracle
to happen. The staff at Microsoft could pull an "Ooooh shiny" and
    forget the whole thing.

The shortest distance between two points, would be... Win98.
You could start with a copy of Win98, and add Metro.Apps to it.
It wouldn't even need a TPM. Where did that pig go... I have lipstick.

A 64-bit copy of Win98, is just one compile away.

What, for example? What in Windows generates recurring revenue? I can't
think of anything, and I can't remember the last time I paid Microsoft anything. I have a Microsoft Office subscription, but you're talking
about Windows. How much are you paying to use Windows every year?

Windows comes pre-installed on every machine I buy, so the OEM licence
is purchased indirectly. But how often do ordinary people replace their machines? You can't say this is a recurring revenue generator? OEMs are running a business so they will need to buy licenses year after year.
This is like any products sold in a shop that needs to be bought when inventory runs out.
