Psalm 55: Treachery Handled Properly
David shows that overwhelming betrayal and deadly oppression must drive
the believer entirely to God rather than to despair.
Crushing hostility, community betrayal, and inward terror threaten to
collapse the spirit, but God preserves those who roll their burdens upon
Him. You should cast every crushing burden.
By praying through distress (Psalm 55:1-8)
David desperately implores the Lord to hear his distress and grant him deliverance from the terrifying oppression and violent threats of his surrounding enemies.
God serves as the only sufficient refuge for the righteous when the
terrors of death and overwhelming distress compass them about.
Jesus Christ brought this cry to its ultimate realization by offering up prayers and supplications with loud cries and tears to the Father amidst
the agonizing terrors of Gethsemane and the cross (Hebrews 5:7, Matthew 26:38-39).
Believers are commanded to pour out every anxiety to the Father through
prayer and supplication rather than being consumed by fear (Philippians
4:6-7, 1 Peter 5:7).
By exposing deceitful works (Psalm 55:9-15)
David exposes the violence, strife, and destructive treachery rampant
within the city and petitions God to confound and bring swift judgment
upon these conspirators.
God is perfectly holy and will execute righteous, destructive vengeance
upon all hypocritical wickedness and violent rebellion.
Jesus Christ fully exposed religious hypocrisy and deceit, announcing righteous woe and impending judgment upon unrepentant hypocrites
(Matthew 23:27-33, Luke 12:1-3).
The church is instructed to expose and renounce deceitful works of
darkness while warning that unrepentant practitioners of malice will
face divine wrath (Ephesians 5:11, Colossians 3:5-6).
By crying out continually (Psalm 55:16-19)
David resolves to cry out continually to God evening, morning, and at
noon, maintaining full confidence that the eternal, unchanging Lord will
hear and redeem his soul from battle.
God is the eternal, sovereign King who unfailingly hears and redeems His covenant people who call upon Him in faith.
Jesus Christ secured eternal redemption through His finished work and
ever lives to make continuous, effective intercession for those who draw
near to God through Him (Hebrews 7:25, Hebrews 9:12).
Christians are instructed to pray without ceasing and to approach the
throne of grace with bold confidence to obtain timely mercy and help (1 Thessalonians 5:17, Hebrews 4:16).
By speaking truth lovingly (Psalm 55:20-21)
David laments the bitter treachery of a close companion who broke his
covenant of peace and masked war in his heart with words smoother than
butter.
Sin distorts relational fidelity and produces deep covenantal
unfaithfulness that incurs severe divine judgment.
Jesus Christ suffered the ultimate fulfillment of treacherous betrayal
by an intimate companion who dipped bread with Him and greeted Him with deceitful affection (John 13:18, Luke 22:47-48).
Believers are exhorted to put away all deceit, slander, and betrayal,
speaking only truth to one another in love as members of one body
(Ephesians 4:25, Colossians 3:9-10).
By casting every burden (Psalm 55:22-23)
David directs his soul to roll his entire burden onto the Lord for
sustained preservation, resting in the certainty that God will overthrow
the bloodthirsty while the faithful trust in Him.
God is sovereignly capable and faithful to sustain the righteous in
their trials while condemning bloodthirsty and deceitful men to destruction.
Jesus Christ invites the weary and heavy-laden to come unto Him for
complete rest, bearing their sins and sorrows upon the cross to secure
their eternal stability (Matthew 11:28-30, 1 Peter 2:24).
The church is charged to cast all anxieties upon the Lord because He
cares for them, remaining steadfast in faith until He establishes them
(1 Peter 5:7-10, Romans 8:31-39).
Invitation
The crushing weight of betrayal and the terror of destruction ultimately
point to the universal plight of sinners facing the holy judgment of
God. Jesus Christ took that terrifying judgment upon Himself, bearing
the guilt, treachery, and sin of His people in His body on the cross,
and He bodily rose from the dead on the third day to triumph over sin,
death, and hell. Turn from all self-reliance and deceit, rest fully in
His finished cross-work, and call upon the name of the Lord Jesus Christ
to receive immediate, eternal salvation.

Good News rCa
Christ bore our sins on the cross to clear our debt before God
(Colossians 2:14), and His resurrection stands as proof of that finished
work (Romans 1:4). Now, God justly forgives those who believe (Romans
3:26), granting escape from His impending judgment (1 Thessalonians
1:10). This mercy is a free gift accessible only through faith (Romans
6:23). If you believe this truth, call upon the Lord to save you today
(Romans 10:9-13):
