In Psalm 52, David is evidently condemning Doeg the Edomite. He accused him of loving lies more than the truth. What lies did Doeg tell? He told Saul the truth, didn't he?
While Doeg reported factual events to Saul, his speech constituted a lie through malicious omission, distorted framing, and false context.
First Samuel 21 records what actually occurred at Nob. David approached Ahimelech the priest alone, unarmed, and claiming to be on an urgent mission for King Saul. Ahimelech questioned David, but David deceived him regarding the nature of his journey. Ahimelech provided David with consecrated bread and the sword of Goliath in good faith, believing he was assisting an honored servant and son-in-law of the king. Doeg witnessed this interaction while detained before the Lord.
In 1 Samuel 22:9-10, Doeg reported the encounter to Saul: "I saw the son of Jesse coming to Nob, to Ahimelech the son of Ahitub. And he inquired of the Lord for him, gave him provisions, and gave him the sword of Goliath the Philistine."
Doeg's report was deceitful in three distinct ways:
rCo Malicious Suppression of the Truth
Doeg knew that Ahimelech acted in complete ignorance of any rift between David and Saul. David had deliberately misled the priest. By omitting David's deception and presenting Ahimelech's actions in isolation, Doeg deliberately painted the high priest as an active, knowing conspirator in rebellion against the crown. A half-truth uttered with the intent to deceive functions as a full lie.
rCo Framing Loyalty as Treason
Doeg framed ordinary pastoral and priestly service as treasonous collusion. Ahimelech himself testified to his total innocence before Saul in 1 Samuel 22:14-15: "And who among all your servants is so faithful as David, who is the king's son-in-law, who goes at your bidding, and is honorable in your house? Did I then begin to inquire of God for him? Far be it from me! Let not the king impute anything to his servant, nor to any in the house of my father. For your servant knew nothing of all this, little or much." Doeg presented an act of fidelity to the king's servant as an act of insurrection against the king.
rCo Corrupt Intent and Deceitful Fruit
In Psalm 52:2-4, David describes Doeg's tongue as a "sharp razor, working deceitfully," stating, "You love evil more than good, lying rather than speaking righteousness. You love all devouring words, you deceitful tongue." Scripture does not define truth merely by the bare accuracy of isolated facts, but by integrity, alignment with God's righteousness, and honest intent. Doeg weaponized selective facts to curry favor with an unstable, paranoid king, intentionally inciting the slaughter of eighty-five priests and the entire city of Nob.
Because Doeg spoke facts with the deliberate design to convey a false reality and destroy the innocent, his words were deceitful, and David rightly condemned him for loving lies more than truth.

Good News rCa
Christ's death on a cross paid the debt we owe God for our sins (Colossians 2:14). God raised Him from the dead to prove this (Romans 1:4). This means God can now remain right, while forgiving our sins (Romans 3:26) and delivering us from His coming wrath (1 Thessalonians 1:10). It's a free gift for those who believe in Christ (Romans 6:23).If you believe, call on the Lord to save you (Romans 10:9-13):
