Day 221, 8 August 2026

1) 2 Chronicles 35:20-27, 2 Kings 23:29-30, Jeremiah 7, Jeremiah 8, Jeremiah 9

2 Kings 23:29-30

29 (Jer 46:2; Jdg 5:19; 2Ch 35:20-24) In his days Pharaoh Necho,
king of Egypt, went up against the king of Assyria to the River Euphrates.
King Josiah went to meet him, but he killed him at Megiddo
when he had seen him.
30 (2Ki 9:28; 2Ch 36:1-4) His servants carried him dead in a chariot
from Megiddo, brought him to Jerusalem, and buried him in his own tomb.
The people of the land took Jehoahaz the son of Josiah,
anointed him, and made him king in place of his father.

[29] In his days Pharaoh-nechoh king of Egypt went up against the king of Assyria to the river Euphrates: and king Josiah went against him; and he
slew him at Megiddo, when he had seen him.
[30] And his servants carried him in a chariot dead from Megiddo, and
brought him to Jerusalem, and buried him in his own sepulchre. And the
people of the land took Jehoahaz the son of Josiah, and anointed him, and
made him king in his father's stead.

The Death of Josiah

2Ki 23:28-30

20 (2Ki 23:29-30; Isa 10:9) After all this when Josiah had prepared
the temple, Necho king of Egypt went up to war in Carchemish
on the Euphrates, and Josiah went out to meet him.
21 (2Ki 18:25; 2Ch 25:19) And Necho sent messengers to him saying,
"What is there between you and me, king of Judah?
I am not against you this day, but against the house with which I am at war. And God has commanded that I hurry. Refrain from being against God
who is with me so that He does not destroy you."
22 (Jdg 5:19; 2Ch 18:29) But Josiah did not turn away from him for he went
to battle against him disguised. He did not listen to the words of Necho
that came from the mouth of God,
but he came to battle in the plain of Megiddo.
23 (1Ki 22:34) So the archers shot King Josiah, and the king said
to his servants, "Take me away for I am severely wounded."
24 (Zec 12:11) Then his servants took him from the chariot,
and they set him in a second chariot, and they brought him to Jerusalem.
He died and was buried in the tombs of his fathers.
And all Judah and Jerusalem mourned for Josiah.
25 (Jer 22:10; La 4:20) And Jeremiah composed a dirge for Josiah,
and all the male and female singers speak of Josiah in their laments
to this day. They set them as a statute over Israel.
They are written in the Laments.
26 And the remainder of the acts of Josiah, his deeds and covenant faithfulness, according to what is written in the Law of the Lord,
27 and his acts from beginning to end are written
in the book of the kings of Israel and Judah.

[20] After all this, when Josiah had prepared the temple, Necho king of
Egypt came up to fight against Carchemish by Euphrates: and Josiah went out against him.
[21] But he sent ambassadors to him, saying, What have I to do with thee,
thou king of Judah? I come not against thee this day, but against the house wherewith I have war: for God commanded me to make haste: forbear thee from meddling with God, who is with me, that he destroy thee not.
[22] Nevertheless Josiah would not turn his face from him, but disguised himself, that he might fight with him, and hearkened not unto the words of Necho from the mouth of God, and came to fight in the valley of Megiddo.
[23] And the archers shot at king Josiah; and the king said to his servants, Have me away; for I am sore wounded.
[24] His servants therefore took him out of that chariot, and put him in the second chariot that he had; and they brought him to Jerusalem, and he died,
and was buried in one of the sepulchres of his fathers. And all Judah and Jerusalem mourned for Josiah.
[25] And Jeremiah lamented for Josiah: and all the singing men and the
singing women spake of Josiah in their lamentations to this day, and made
them an ordinance in Israel: and, behold, they are written in the
lamentations.
[26] Now the rest of the acts of Josiah, and his goodness, according to that which was written in the law of the LORD,
[27] And his deeds, first and last, behold, they are written in the book of
the kings of Israel and Judah.

Jeremiah 7

False Trust in the Temple

1 The word that came to Jeremiah from the Lord, saying:
2 (Jer 26:2) Stand in the gate of the house of the Lord
and proclaim there this word:
Hear the word of the Lord, all you of Judah,
who enter at these gates to worship the Lord.
3 (Jer 18:11; 26:13) Thus says the Lord of Hosts, the God of Israel:
Amend your ways and your deeds, and I will cause you to dwell in this place.
4 (Mic 3:11) Do not trust in lying words, saying,
"The temple of the Lord, the temple of the Lord, the temple of the Lord."
5 (Isa 1:19; Jer 4:1-2) For if you thoroughly amend your ways and your deeds, if you thoroughly execute justice between a man and his neighbor,
6 (Dt 8:19; Jer 2:34) if you do not oppress the stranger, the fatherless,
and the widow, and do not shed innocent blood in this place,
or walk after other gods to your harm,
7 (Dt 4:40; Jer 3:18) then I will cause you to dwell in this place,
in the land that I gave to your fathers, forever and ever.
8 (Jer 7:4) Indeed, you trust in lying words that cannot profit.
9 (Ex 20:3; Jer 7:6) Shall you steal, murder, and commit adultery,
and swear falsely, and burn incense to Baal,
and walk after other gods whom you do not know,
10 (Jer 32:34; Eze 23:39) and come and stand before Me in this house,
which is called by My name, and say, "We are delivered," so that you may
do all these abominations?
11 (Isa 56:7; Mt 21:13) Has this house, which is called by My name,
become a den of robbers in your eyes?
Certainly, even I have seen it, says the Lord.
12 (1Sa 4:10-11; Jos 18:1) But go now to My place which was in Shiloh,
where I set My name at the first, and see what I did to it for the wickedness of My people Israel.
13 (Isa 65:12; Pr 1:24) And now, because you have done all these works,
says the Lord, and I spoke to you, rising up early and speaking,
but you did not hear, and I called you, but you did not answer,
14 (Jer 7:4; 7:10) therefore I will do to this house, which is called by
My name, in which you trust, and to the place which I gave to you
and to your fathers, as I have done to Shiloh.
15 (2Ki 17:23; Jer 15:1) I will cast you out of My sight as I have cast out
all your brothers, even the whole seed of Ephraim.
16 (Ex 32:10; Jer 11:14) As for you, do not pray for this people,
nor lift up a cry nor prayer for them, nor make intercession to Me,
for I will not hear you.
17 Do you not see what they do in the cities of Judah
and in the streets of Jerusalem?
18 (Jer 19:13; 1Ki 14:9) The children gather wood, and the fathers
kindle the fire, and the women knead their dough, to make cakes
to the queen of heaven, and to pour out drink offerings to other gods,
that they may provoke Me to anger.
19 (1Co 10:22) Do they provoke Me to anger? says the Lord. Do they not
provoke themselves to the shame of their own faces?
20 (Jer 42:18; La 2:3-5) Therefore thus says the Lord God: My anger
and My fury will be poured out upon this place, upon man and upon beast,
and upon the trees of the field, and upon the fruit of the ground;
and it shall burn, and shall not be quenched.
21 (Jer 6:20; Hos 8:13) Thus says the Lord of Hosts, the God of Israel:
Add your burnt offerings to your sacrifices and eat flesh.
22 (Hos 6:6; 1Sa 15:22) For I spoke not to your fathers, nor commanded them
in the day that I brought them out of the land of Egypt, concerning
burnt offerings or sacrifices.
23 (Ex 15:26; Dt 5:33) But this thing I commanded them, saying,
"Obey My voice, and I will be your God, and you shall be My people.
And walk in all the ways that I have commanded you,
that it may be well with you."
24 (Ps 81:11-12; Jer 7:26) But they did not listen, nor incline their ear,
but walked in the counsels and in the imagination of their evil heart,
and went backward and not forward.
25 (2Ch 36:15; Jer 25:4) Since the day that your fathers came
out of the land of Egypt to this day, I have even sent to you all
My servants the prophets, daily rising up early and sending them.
26 (Jer 16:12; 2Ch 30:8) Yet they did not listen to Me, nor incline their ear, but hardened their neck. They did worse than their fathers.
27 (Isa 50:2; 65:12) Therefore you will speak all these words to them.
But they will not listen to you. You will also call to them,
but they will not answer you.
28 (Isa 59:14-15) You shall say to them: This is a nation that does not obey the voice of the Lord their God, nor receive correction. Truth has perished, and has been cut off from their mouth.
29 (Job 1:20; Jer 6:30) Cut off your hair, O Jerusalem, and cast it away,
and take up a lamentation on high places; for the Lord has rejected
and forsaken the generation of His wrath.
30 (Jer 32:34; Eze 7:20) For the sons of Judah have done evil in My sight,
says the Lord. They have set their abominations in the house which i
s called by My name, to pollute it.
31 (Dt 17:3; Lev 18:21) They have built the high places of Topheth,
which is in the Valley of Ben Hinnom, to burn their sons a
nd their daughters in the fire, which I did not command them,
nor did it come into My heart.
32 (Jer 19:6; 19:11) Therefore, truly the days are coming, says the Lord,
that it will no more be called Topheth, nor the Valley of Ben Hinnom,
but the Valley of Slaughter; for they will bury in Topheth
because there is no other place.
33 (Dt 28:26; Jer 12:9) The corpses of this people shall be food
for the fowl of the heaven and for the beasts of the earth;
and no one will frighten them away.
34 (Eze 26:13; Rev 18:23) Then I will cause to cease from the cities of Judah and from the streets of Jerusalem the voice of laughter
and the voice of gladness, the voice of the bridegroom
and the voice of the bride; for the land shall become desolate.

Jeremiah 7
[1] The word that came to Jeremiah from the LORD, saying,
[2] Stand in the gate of the LORD's house, and proclaim there this word, and say, Hear the word of the LORD, all ye of Judah, that enter in at these
gates to worship the LORD.
[3] Thus saith the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel, Amend your ways and
your doings, and I will cause you to dwell in this place.
[4] Trust ye not in lying words, saying, The temple of the LORD, The temple
of the LORD, The temple of the LORD, are these.
[5] For if ye throughly amend your ways and your doings; if ye throughly execute judgment between a man and his neighbour;
[6] If ye oppress not the stranger, the fatherless, and the widow, and shed
not innocent blood in this place, neither walk after other gods to your hurt: [7] Then will I cause you to dwell in this place, in the land that I gave to your fathers, for ever and ever.
[8] Behold, ye trust in lying words, that cannot profit.
[9] Will ye steal, murder, and commit adultery, and swear falsely, and burn incense unto Baal, and walk after other gods whom ye know not;
[10] And come and stand before me in this house, which is called by my name, and say, We are delivered to do all these abominations?
[11] Is this house, which is called by my name, become a den of robbers in
your eyes? Behold, even I have seen it, saith the LORD.
[12] But go ye now unto my place which was in Shiloh, where I set my name at the first, and see what I did to it for the wickedness of my people Israel. [13] And now, because ye have done all these works, saith the LORD, and I
spake unto you, rising up early and speaking, but ye heard not; and I called you, but ye answered not;
[14] Therefore will I do unto this house, which is called by my name,
wherein ye trust, and unto the place which I gave to you and to your
fathers, as I have done to Shiloh.
[15] And I will cast you out of my sight, as I have cast out all your
brethren, even the whole seed of Ephraim.
[16] Therefore pray not thou for this people, neither lift up cry nor prayer for them, neither make intercession to me: for I will not hear thee.
[17] Seest thou not what they do in the cities of Judah and in the streets
of Jerusalem?
[18] The children gather wood, and the fathers kindle the fire, and the
women knead their dough, to make cakes to the queen of heaven, and to pour
out drink offerings unto other gods, that they may provoke me to anger.
[19] Do they provoke me to anger? saith the LORD: do they not provoke themselves to the confusion of their own faces?
[20] Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD; Behold, mine anger and my fury shall
be poured out upon this place, upon man, and upon beast, and upon the trees
of the field, and upon the fruit of the ground; and it shall burn, and shall not be quenched.
[21] Thus saith the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel; Put your burnt
offerings unto your sacrifices, and eat flesh.
[22] For I spake not unto your fathers, nor commanded them in the day that I brought them out of the land of Egypt, concerning burnt offerings or sacrifices:
[23] But this thing commanded I them, saying, Obey my voice, and I will be
your God, and ye shall be my people: and walk ye in all the ways that I have commanded you, that it may be well unto you.
[24] But they hearkened not, nor inclined their ear, but walked in the
counsels and in the imagination of their evil heart, and went backward, and
not forward.
[25] Since the day that your fathers came forth out of the land of Egypt
unto this day I have even sent unto you all my servants the prophets, daily rising up early and sending them:
[26] Yet they hearkened not unto me, nor inclined their ear, but hardened
their neck: they did worse than their fathers.
[27] Therefore thou shalt speak all these words unto them; but they will not hearken to thee: thou shalt also call unto them; but they will not answer
thee.
[28] But thou shalt say unto them, This is a nation that obeyeth not the
voice of the LORD their God, nor receiveth correction: truth is perished,
and is cut off from their mouth.
[29] Cut off thine hair, O Jerusalem, and cast it away, and take up a lamentation on high places; for the LORD hath rejected and forsaken the generation of his wrath.
[30] For the children of Judah have done evil in my sight, saith the LORD:
they have set their abominations in the house which is called by my
name, to pollute it.
[31] And they have built the high places of Tophet, which is in the valley
of the son of Hinnom, to burn their sons and their daughters in the fire;
which I commanded them not, neither came it into my heart.
[32] Therefore, behold, the days come, saith the LORD, that it shall no more
be called Tophet, nor the valley of the son of Hinnom, but the valley of slaughter: for they shall bury in Tophet, till there be no place.
[33] And the carcases of this people shall be meat for the fowls of the
heaven, and for the beasts of the earth; and none shall fray them away.
[34] Then will I cause to cease from the cities of Judah, and from the
streets of Jerusalem, the voice of mirth, and the voice of gladness, the
voice of the bridegroom, and the voice of the bride: for the land shall be desolate.

Jeremiah 8

1 (Eze 6:5) At that time, says the Lord, they will bring out the bones
of the kings of Judah, and the bones of his officials, and the bones
of the priests, and the bones of the prophets, and the bones
of the inhabitants of Jerusalem out of their graves.
2 (2Ki 23:5; Jer 9:22) And they will spread them before the sun
and the moon and all the host of heaven, whom they have loved
and whom they have served, and after whom they have walked
and whom they have sought, and whom they have worshipped.
They will not be gathered, nor be buried.
They will be as dung upon the face of the earth.
3 (Rev 9:6; Job 7:15-16) Death will be chosen rather than life
by all the rest of those who remain of this evil family,
which remains in all the places wherever I have driven them,
says the Lord of Hosts.

Jeremiah 8
[1] At that time, saith the LORD, they shall bring out the bones of the
kings of Judah, and the bones of his princes, and the bones of the priests,
and the bones of the prophets, and the bones of the inhabitants of
Jerusalem, out of their graves:
[2] And they shall spread them before the sun, and the moon, and all the
host of heaven, whom they have loved, and whom they have served, and after
whom they have walked, and whom they have sought, and whom they have worshipped: they shall not be gathered, nor be buried; they shall be for
dung upon the face of the earth.
[3] And death shall be chosen rather than life by all the residue of them
that remain of this evil family, which remain in all the places whither I
have driven them, saith the LORD of hosts.

Sin and Judgment

4 (Pr 24:16; Am 5:2) Moreover you shall say to them,
Thus says the Lord: Do men fall and not arise?
Do they turn away and not repent?
5 (Jer 9:6; 5:3) Why then is this people of Jerusalem
turned away by a perpetual backsliding?
They hold fast to deceit; they refuse to return.
6 (Ps 14:2; Job 39:19-25) I listened and heard,
but they did not speak what is right.
No man repented of his wickedness, saying, "What have I done?"
Everyone turned to his course, as the horse rushes into the battle.
7 (Isa 1:3; SS 2:12; Jer 5:4-5) Indeed, the stork in the sky
knows her appointed times.
And the turtledove and the crane and the swallow
observe the time of their coming.
But My people do not know the judgment of the Lord.
8 (Job 5:12-13; Ro 1:22) How do you say, "We are wise,
and the law of the Lord is with us"?
Certainly the lying pen of the scribes has made it into a lie.
9 (Jer 6:15; Isa 19:11) The wise men are ashamed;
they are dismayed and caught.
Indeed, they have rejected the word of the Lord,
and what kind of wisdom do they have?
10 (Jer 6:12-13) Therefore I will give their wives to others,
and their fields to those who shall inherit them.
For everyone from the least even to the greatest is given to covetousness;
from the prophet even to the priest everyone deals falsely.
11 (Jer 6:14; La 2:14) For they have healed the brokenness
of the daughter of My people superficially,
saying, "Peace, peace," when there is no peace.
12 (Jer 3:3; Ps 52:7) Were they ashamed when they had committed abomination? They were not at all ashamed, nor could they blush.
Therefore they will fall among those who fall;
in the time of their punishment they will be cast down, says the Lord.
13 (Joel 1:7; Mt 21:19) I will surely consume them, says the Lord.
There will be no grapes on the vine
nor figs on the fig tree, and the leaf shall fade;
and the things that I have given them will pass away from them.
14 (Jer 23:15; 9:15; 35:11) Why do we sit still? Assemble yourselves,
and let us enter the fortified cities and let us perish there.
For the Lord our God has doomed us and given us water of gall to drink,
because we have sinned against the Lord.
15 (Jer 14:19) We looked for peace, but no good came;
and for a time of health, but there was trouble!
16 (Jdg 5:22; 18:29) The snorting of his horses was heard from Dan;
the whole land trembled at the sound of the neighing of his strong ones.
For they have come and have devoured the land and all that is in it,
the city, and those who dwell in it.
17 (Dt 32:24; Ps 58:4-5) See, I will send serpents against you,
adders, which will not be charmed, and they will bite you,
declares the Lord. Jeremiah Mourns for His People
18 (Isa 22:4; La 1:16-17) My sorrow is beyond healing;
my heart is faint within me.
19 (Isa 39:3; 13:5) Listen! The cry of the daughter of my people
from a far country:
"Is not the Lord in Zion? Is not her king in her?"
"Why have they provoked Me to anger with their graven images,
with foreign vanities?"
20 "The harvest is past, the summer is ended, and we are not saved."
21 (Jer 14:17; Joel 2:6) For the brokenness of the daughter of my people
am I broken; I mourn; dismay has taken hold of me.
22 (Ge 37:25; Jer 46:11) Is there no balm in Gilead?
Is there no physician there?
Why then has not the health of the daughter of my people recovered?

[4] Moreover thou shalt say unto them, Thus saith the LORD; Shall they fall, and not arise? shall he turn away, and not return?
[5] Why then is this people of Jerusalem slidden back by a perpetual backsliding? they hold fast deceit, they refuse to return.
[6] I hearkened and heard, but they spake not aright: no man repented him of his wickedness, saying, What have I done? every one turned to his course, as the horse rusheth into the battle.
[7] Yea, the stork in the heaven knoweth her appointed times; and the turtle and the crane and the swallow observe the time of their coming; but my
people know not the judgment of the LORD.
[8] How do ye say, We are wise, and the law of the LORD is with us? Lo, certainly in vain made he it; the pen of the scribes is in vain.
[9] The wise men are ashamed, they are dismayed and taken: lo, they have rejected the word of the LORD; and what wisdom is in them?
[10] Therefore will I give their wives unto others, and their fields to them that shall inherit them: for every one from the least even unto the greatest
is given to covetousness, from the prophet even unto the priest every one dealeth falsely.
[11] For they have healed the hurt of the daughter of my people slightly, saying, Peace, peace; when there is no peace.
[12] Were they ashamed when they had committed abomination? nay, they were
not at all ashamed, neither could they blush: therefore shall they fall
among them that fall: in the time of their visitation they shall be cast
down, saith the LORD.
[13] I will surely consume them, saith the LORD: there shall be no grapes on the vine, nor figs on the fig tree, and the leaf shall fade; and the things that I have given them shall pass away from them.
[14] Why do we sit still? assemble yourselves, and let us enter into the defenced cities, and let us be silent there: for the LORD our God hath put
us to silence, and given us water of gall to drink, because we have sinned against the LORD.
[15] We looked for peace, but no good came; and for a time of health, and behold trouble!
[16] The snorting of his horses was heard from Dan: the whole land trembled
at the sound of the neighing of his strong ones; for they are come, and have devoured the land, and all that is in it; the city, and those that dwell therein.
[17] For, behold, I will send serpents, cockatrices, among you, which will
not be charmed, and they shall bite you, saith the LORD.
[18] When I would comfort myself against sorrow, my heart is faint in me.
[19] Behold the voice of the cry of the daughter of my people because of
them that dwell in a far country: Is not the LORD in Zion? is not her king
in her? Why have they provoked me to anger with their graven images, and
with strange vanities?
[20] The harvest is past, the summer is ended, and we are not saved.
[21] For the hurt of the daughter of my people am I hurt; I am black; astonishment hath taken hold on me.
[22] Is there no balm in Gilead; is there no physician there? why then is
not the health of the daughter of my people recovered?

Jeremiah 9

Failures of Judah

1 (Jer 13:17; Isa 22:4) Oh, that my head were waters
and my eyes a fountain of tears,
that I might weep day and night for the slain of the daughter of my people!
2 (Jer 5:7-8; 23:10) Oh, that I had in the wilderness
a lodging place of wayfaring men, that I might leave my people
and go from them! For they all are adulterers,
an assembly of treacherous men.
3 (Jdg 2:10; Jer 4:22) They bend their tongues like their bow;
lies and not truth prevail upon the land;
for they proceed from evil to evil, and they do not know Me, says the Lord.
4 (Jer 6:28; 12:6) Let everyone be on guard against his neighbor,
and do not trust in any brother; for every brother supplants,
and every neighbor walks about with slanders.
5 (Mic 6:12) Everyone deceives his neighbour and does not speak the truth.
They have taught their tongue to speak lies;
they weary themselves in committing iniquity.
6 (Job 21:14-15; Pr 1:24 )Your habitation is in the midst of deceit;
through deceit they refuse to know Me, says the Lord.
7 (Isa 1:25; Jer 6:27) Therefore thus says the Lord of Hosts:
Now, I will refine them and assay them; for what else shall I do
for the daughter of My people?
8 (Ps 28:3; Jer 9:3 ) Their tongue is a deadly arrow; it speaks deceit.
One speaks peaceably to his neighbor with his mouth,
but in his heart he lies in wait.
9 (Jer 5:9; 5:29) Shall I not punish them for these things?
says the Lord. Shall not My soul be avenged on such a nation as this?
10 (Jer 12:4; Hos 4:3; Jer 7:29) For the mountains I will take up
a weeping and wailing,
and for the habitations of the wilderness a lamentation,
because they are burned up so that no one can pass through them;
nor can men hear the lowing of the cattle.
Both the fowl of the heavens and the beast have fled; they are gone.
11 (Isa 25:2; 34:13) I will make Jerusalem a heap of ruins and a den of jackals; and I will make the cities of Judah desolate,
without an inhabitant.
12 (Ps 107:43; Hos 14:9) Who is the wise man who may understand this?
And who is he to whom the mouth of the Lord has spoken, that he may
declare it? Why is the land ruined and burned up like a wilderness,
so that no one passes through?
13 (2Ch 7:19; Jer 22:9) And the Lord said: Because they have forsaken
My law which I set before them, and have not obeyed My voice,
nor walked in it,
14 (Jer 7:24; 3:17) but have walked after the imagination of their own heart and after the Baals, which their fathers taught them.
15 (Jer 8:14; Ps 80:5) Therefore thus says the Lord of Hosts,
the God of Israel: I will feed them, even this people, with wormwood
and give them water of gall to drink.
16 (Lev 26:33; Dt 28:64) I will scatter them also among the nations,
whom neither they nor their fathers have known.
And I will send a sword after them until I have consumed them.
17 (2Ch 35:25; Ecc 12:5) Thus says the Lord of Hosts:
Consider and call for the mourning women, that they may come;
and send for wailing women, that they may come.
18 (Jer 14:17; 9:1) And let them make haste and take up a wailing for us,
that our eyes may run down with tears and our eyelids gush out with waters.
19 (Jer 4:13; Dt 28:29) For a voice of wailing is heard out of Zion,
"How devastated we are! We are greatly humiliated,
because we have forsaken the land,
because our dwellings have cast us out."
20 (Isa 32:9-13) Yet hear the word of the Lord, O you women,
and let your ear receive the word of His mouth;
and teach your daughters wailing, and everyone her neighbor a lamentation.
21 (2Ch 36:17; Jer 6:11) "For death has come up into our windows;
and has entered our palaces, to cut off the children from the streets,
and the young men from the squares."
22 (Jer 8:2; Ps 83:10) Speak, Thus says the Lord:
"The carcasses of men shall fall as dung upon the open field,
and as the sheaf after the harvester, and no one shall gather them."
23 (Ecc 9:11; 1Ki 20:10-11) Thus says the Lord:
Let not the wise man glory in his wisdom,
and let not the mighty man glory in his might,
let not the rich man glory in his riches;
24 (Mic 7:18; 1Co 1:31) but let him who glories glory in this,
that he understands and knows Me,
that I am the Lord who exercises lovingkindness,
justice, and righteousness in the earth. For in these things I delight,
says the Lord.
25 (Ro 2:8-9) The days are surely coming, says the Lord,
that I will punish all who are circumcised and yet uncircumcised-
26 (Lev 26:41; Jer 4:4) Egypt, Judah, Edom, the children of Ammon,
Moab, and all who dwell in the wilderness who clip the hair on their temples; for all these nations are uncircumcised, and all the house of Israel
are uncircumcised of heart.

Jeremiah 9
[1] Oh that my head were waters, and mine eyes a fountain of tears, that I might weep day and night for the slain of the daughter of my people!
[2] Oh that I had in the wilderness a lodging place of wayfaring men; that I might leave my people, and go from them! for they be all adulterers, an assembly of treacherous men.
[3] And they bend their tongues like their bow for lies: but they are not valiant for the truth upon the earth; for they proceed from evil to evil,
and they know not me, saith the LORD.
[4] Take ye heed every one of his neighbour, and trust ye not in any
brother: for every brother will utterly supplant, and every neighbour will
walk with slanders.
[5] And they will deceive every one his neighbour, and will not speak the truth: they have taught their tongue to speak lies, and weary themselves to commit iniquity.
[6] Thine habitation is in the midst of deceit; through deceit they refuse
to know me, saith the LORD.
[7] Therefore thus saith the LORD of hosts, Behold, I will melt them, and
try them; for how shall I do for the daughter of my people?
[8] Their tongue is as an arrow shot out; it speaketh deceit: one speaketh peaceably to his neighbour with his mouth, but in heart he layeth his wait.
[9] Shall I not visit them for these things? saith the LORD: shall not my
soul be avenged on such a nation as this?
[10] For the mountains will I take up a weeping and wailing, and for the habitations of the wilderness a lamentation, because they are burned up, so that none can pass through them; neither can men hear the voice of the
cattle; both the fowl of the heavens and the beast are fled; they are gone. [11] And I will make Jerusalem heaps, and a den of dragons; and I will make
the cities of Judah desolate, without an inhabitant.
[12] Who is the wise man, that may understand this? and who is he to whom
the mouth of the LORD hath spoken, that he may declare it, for what the land perisheth and is burned up like a wilderness, that none passeth through?
[13] And the LORD saith, Because they have forsaken my law which I set
before them, and have not obeyed my voice, neither walked therein;
[14] But have walked after the imagination of their own heart, and after Baalim, which their fathers taught them:
[15] Therefore thus saith the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel; Behold, I
will feed them, even this people, with wormwood, and give them water of gall
to drink.
[16] I will scatter them also among the heathen, whom neither they nor their fathers have known: and I will send a sword after them, till I have consumed them.
[17] Thus saith the LORD of hosts, Consider ye, and call for the mourning women, that they may come; and send for cunning women, that they may come:
[18] And let them make haste, and take up a wailing for us, that our eyes
may run down with tears, and our eyelids gush out with waters.
[19] For a voice of wailing is heard out of Zion, How are we spoiled! we are greatly confounded, because we have forsaken the land, because our dwellings have cast us out.
[20] Yet hear the word of the LORD, O ye women, and let your ear receive the word of his mouth, and teach your daughters wailing, and every one her neighbour lamentation.
[21] For death is come up into our windows, and is entered into our palaces,
to cut off the children from without, and the young men from the streets.
[22] Speak, Thus saith the LORD, Even the carcases of men shall fall as dung upon the open field, and as the handful after the harvestman, and none shall gather them.
[23] Thus saith the LORD, Let not the wise man glory in his wisdom, neither
let the mighty man glory in his might, let not the rich man glory in his riches:
[24] But let him that glorieth glory in this, that he understandeth and
knoweth me, that I am the LORD which exercise lovingkindness, judgment, and righteousness, in the earth: for in these things I delight, saith the LORD. [25] Behold, the days come, saith the LORD, that I will punish all them
which are circumcised with the uncircumcised;
[26] Egypt, and Judah, and Edom, and the children of Ammon, and Moab, and
all that are in the utmost corners, that dwell in the wilderness: for all
these nations are uncircumcised, and all the house of Israel are
uncircumcised in the heart.

2) Our Daily Bread for 8 August 2026 Titled Impacting Generations
By Xochitl Dixon

Deuteronomy 4:1-2,6-10

Moses Commands Obedience

1 (Dt 8:1; Eze 20:11) Now therefore, listen, O Israel, to the statutes
and to the judgments which I am teaching you to do, so that you may live;
and go in and possess the land which the Lord, the God of your fathers,
is giving you.
2 (Dt 12:32; Jos 1:7) You shall not add to the word which I am commanding
you, nor shall you take anything from it, so that you may keep
the commandments of the Lord your God which I command you.
6 (Job 28:28; Pr 1:7) Therefore, keep and do them, for this is your wisdom
and your understanding in the sight of the nations which shall hear
all these statutes, and say, "Surely this great nation is a wise
and understanding people."
7 (2Sa 7:23; Ps 46:1) For what nation is there so great, who has a god
so near to it as the Lord our God is in all things whenever we call on Him?
8 And what nation is there so great that has statutes and judgments
so righteous as all this law, which I am setting before you today?
9 (Ge 18:19; Dt 4:23) Only give heed to yourself and keep your
soul diligently, lest you forget the things which your eyes have
seen and lest they depart from your heart all the days of your life;
but teach them to your sons, and your grandsons.
10 (Ex 19:9; 19:16) Especially concerning the day you stood
before the Lord your God at Horeb, when the Lord said to me,
"Gather the people together to Me, so that I will let them hear
My words so that they may learn to fear Me all the days
they shall live on the earth, and so that they may teach their children."

[1] Now therefore hearken, O Israel, unto the statutes and unto the
judgments, which I teach you, for to do them, that ye may live, and go in
and possess the land which the LORD God of your fathers giveth you.
[2] Ye shall not add unto the word which I command you, neither shall ye diminish ought from it, that ye may keep the commandments of the LORD your
God which I command you.
[6] Keep therefore and do them; for this is your wisdom and your
understanding in the sight of the nations, which shall hear all these
statutes, and say, Surely this great nation is a wise and understanding
people.
[7] For what nation is there so great, who hath God so nigh unto them, as
the LORD our God is in all things that we call upon him for?
[8] And what nation is there so great, that hath statutes and judgments so righteous as all this law, which I set before you this day?
[9] Only take heed to thyself, and keep thy soul diligently, lest thou
forget the things which thine eyes have seen, and lest they depart from thy heart all the days of thy life: but teach them thy sons, and thy sons' sons; [10] Specially the day that thou stoodest before the LORD thy God in Horeb, when the LORD said unto me, Gather me the people together, and I will make
them hear my words, that they may learn to fear me all the days that they
shall live upon the earth, and that they may teach their children.

During basketball practice, Enrique's dad asked him and his friend to show the team how to pass the ball correctly. Enrique had practiced for weeks but feared messing up. He prayed, completed the drill, and said, "Thank You, God!" Later his dad said, "I'm proud of you for working hard, son. But I'm prouder that you prayed and praised God." Enrique shrugged
and said, "I just did what you do."

Throughout history, God has worked through healthy, cross-generational relationships. Sharing His decrees and laws with the Israelites, He said not to add to them nor subtract from them (Deuteronomy 4:1-2). "Observe them carefully," God said, "for this will show your wisdom and understanding to the nations" (v. 6). But God wasn't only interested in how others perceived His people. He said, "Teach them to your children and to their children after them" (v. 9). Why? So that they "may learn to revere" God and teach "their children" about Him (v. 10).

We don't have to be parents or serve in childrenrCOs ministry to share our Spirit-empowered faith with younger people. Whether werCOre praying for a younger person or a young family, providing resources to nurture spiritual growth, or offering encouragement, God uses our healthy, cross-generational relationships to impact generations to come.

Reflect & Pray

How has God used older people to nurture you spiritually? How can you
invest in the spiritual lives of a younger person or a young family?

Father God, please help me value, serve,
and share You with people from all generations.

Week 7 Promises of Grace - Day 7 Support System

Deut 33:27

27 (Ge 49:24; Ps 90:1-2) The eternal God is your refuge,
and underneath you are the everlasting arms;
He will drive out the enemy before you,
and will say, "Destroy them."

27 The eternal God is thy refuge,
And underneath are the everlasting arms:
And he shall thrust out the enemy from before thee;
And shall say, Destroy them.

Misty was only 4 when her parents divorced. Her dad moved away,
and the following summer she went with her grandparents to visit him
in his new apartment. In the swimming pool one afternoon, Grandpa stood
Misty on the side of the pool, held out his arm, and called, "Jump!"
But Misty, normally a little fish, suddenly seemed afraid of the water,
and stood trembling on the sidewalk shaking her head.
"Jump, Misty - I'll catch you!"
"Are you sure, Grandpa?"
"Of course I'm sure! Jump!"
But Misty wouldn't jump. Finally Grandpa, a bit irritated, said, "Misty, do
you think I Won't catch you? Do you think I'll just walk away?"
The tears spilled over, and Misty sobbed. "Daddy did!"
Human support systems often fail us. We disappoint those we love, and
are disappointed by them. People simply aren't there for us
when we need them most.
But God promises that with him things are different. He's always there,
always listening, always caring, always ready to support us.
"Underneath his everlasting arms".
Sometimes those arms reach out clothed in flesh, in the warm embrace
of a loved one. Sometimes they support us through the Word, sometimes through the quiet peace that comes in prayer. Sometimes we are not aware of them
at all, but they still hold us up, supporting, surrounding, loving.
Underneath us are the everlasting arms.

Application

a) Have I ever felt abandoned by someone I loved and depended upon?

b) How have I experienced the faithfulness of God's "Everlasting arms"?

c) Now can this verse help me in times when I feel my supports have given way?

4) From Prosperity Promises - Kenneth Copeland

2 Chr 31:21

21 And in every deed that he undertook in the service of the house
of God and with the law and commandment to seek out his God,
he did this with all his heart, and he found success.

21 And in every work that he began in the service of the house
of God, and in the law, and in the commandments, to seek his God,
he did it with all his heart, and prospered.

5) From a Book called God's Promises for you:

God's Protection in Times of Trouble

Ps 27:1-6

PSALMS 27

A Psalm of David.

1 The Lord is my light and my salvation;
whom will I fear?
The Lord is the strength of my life;
of whom will I be afraid?
2 (Ps 63:1; 84:2) When the wicked came against me
to eat my flesh -
my enemies and my foes -
they stumbled and fell.
3 (Ps 79:10; 80:5) Though an army should encamp against me,
my heart will not fear;
though war should rise against me,
in this will I be confident.
4 (Isa 30:29; Ps 62:8) One thing I have asked from the Lord,
that will I seek after -
for me to dwell in the house of the Lord
all the days of my life,
to see the beauty of the Lord,
and to inquire in His temple.
5 (Ps 42:11; 43:5) For in the time of trouble
He will hide me in His pavilion;
in the shelter of His tabernacle He will hide me;
He will set me up on a rock.
6 (2Sa 17:22; Dt 3:8 - 9) Now my head will be lifted up
above my enemies encircling me;
therefore I will offer sacrifices of joy in His tabernacle;
I will sing, yes, I will sing praises to the Lord.

1 The LORD is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear?
The LORD is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?
2 When the wicked, even mine enemies and my foes,
came upon me to eat up my flesh,
They stumbled and fell.
3 Though an host should encamp against me, my heart shall not fear:
Though war should rise against me, in this will I be confident.
4 One thing have I desired of the LORD, that will I seek after;
That I may dwell in the house of the LORD all the days of my life,
To behold the beauty of the LORD, and to enquire in his temple.
5 For in the time of trouble he shall hide me in his pavilion:
In the secret of his tabernacle shall he hide me;
he shall set me up upon a rock.
6 And now shall mine head be lifted up,
Above mine enemies round about me:
Therefore will I offer in his tabernacle sacrifices of joy;
I will sing, yea, I will sing praises unto the LORD.

Remember God's promises when You pray

The Lord's prayer

Matthew 6:9-13

9 "Therefore pray in this manner:
Our Father who is in heaven,
hallowed be Your name.
10 (Mt 3:2; 4:17) Your kingdom come;
Your will be done
on earth, as it is in heaven.
11 (Pr 30:8; Isa 33:16) Give us this day our daily bread.
12 (Ex 34:7; Ps 32:1) And forgive us our debts,
as we forgive our debtors.
13 (1Co 10:13; Jn 17:15) And lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil.
For Yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen."

9 After this manner therefore pray ye:
Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name.
10 Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven.
11 Give us this day our daily bread.
12 And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.
13 And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil:
For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen.

6) This come from Praying for Muslims in Canada 2015 (Is there a 2021 edition?)

New Brunswick

Total population 753900
Muslim population (est.) 4543

Moncton, followed by Fredericton and Saint John, each have a growing Muslim population in New Brunswick, In 2007, the building that was formerly a Baptist church was converted into Moncton's 1st mosque. The University of Moncton
also has a Muslim student association hosting prayer services, fellowship getherings, and outreaches on campus.
Fredericton also has one mosque and a Muslim student association serving the campuses of the University of New Brunswick and St. Thomas University. Fredericton's Muslim population consists in 2014 of about 50 families,
and between 300 to 400 university students.
Saint John is home to the 1st Muslim Association for the province,
which also helped foster the Islamic associations of Fredericton and Moncton.
a 'musalla', or prayer location that is not officially structured as a mosque, has been established in the Uptown area with the intention of seeing it grow into a 2nd official place of Muslim worship. Demand for this new location has been primarily for university students moving into the area.

Pray for Muslims and New Brunswick
- that the eyes of pastors, believers and entire congregations will be opened to see this growing body of Muslims, and their hearts will be opened
to sharing God's love in Jesus Christ with them

- that intentional ministries to Muslims will grow and flourish in these
areas of concentration

- that cooperative CNNMM Networks will form to really, encourage,
and equip believers to lovingly reach Muslims in this province.

30 days of prayer for the Muslim World 24 April to 23 May 2020

Under the Keep Praying page

When the new moon is sighted it marks the beginning of t he new Islamic month and Eid al-Fitr, the "Festival of Breaking the Fast", will start! After 30 days of fasting, the Eid celebration at the end of Ramadan is a joyful time that usually lasts about 3 days. Muslims will buy new clothes, exchange gifts and, of course, enjoy special foods. In Muslim-majority nations, the streets may be decorated and festivals will be held.
For many Muslims, Eid-al-Fitr begins with communal prayers at daybreak and the distribution of money (zakat) to the poor, which is one of the 5 pillars of Islam.
You can greet Muslim friends during this time by saying "Eid Mubarak",
which means Blessed Eid!"
Ramadan is over for this year, but you can continue to pray for Muslims you know, and Muslims around the world:
- Despite the unsettling developments in our world today that involve actions in the name of Islam, there is at the same time a largely untold story about unprecedented movement to Christ among Muslims. There have been more such movements of thousands or more new disciples among Muslims in the last three decades or so than in all the previous history of Christian Muslim relationships! Pray for this momentum to continue.

Acts 2:12-17 : 17 12 They were all amazed and perplexed, saying to each other, "What does this mean?"
13 (1Co 14:23) Others mocking said, "These men are full of new wine."

Peter's Speech at Pentecost

14 (Ac 1:26) But Peter, standing up with the eleven, lifted up his voice
and said to them, "Men of Judea and all you who dwell in Jerusalem,
let this be known to you, and listen to my words.
15 For these are not drunk, as you suppose,
since it is the third hour of the day.
16 But this is what was spoken by the prophet Joel:
17 (Isa 44:3; Ac 10:45) 'In the last days it shall be,' says God,
'that I will pour out My Spirit on all flesh;
your sons and your daughters shall prophesy,
your young men shall see visions,
and your old men shall dream dreams.'

- Pray for Christian workers an organisations focused on seeing effective discipleship movements among Muslim people.

- Ask the Holy Spirit to continue to inspire you to have god's heart for Muslims, to see them as He does, and to be the light that then to Jesus.

Matthew 5:14-15 : 14 "You are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden. 15 Neither do men light a candle and put it under
a basket, but on a candlestick. And it gives light to all who are in the house."

Ideas for prayer

- Pray for opportunities to show the love of Christ to Muslims around you
- Pray for, and offer generous hospitality to, those you know who are serving Christ among Muslim people -

Romans 12:13 "contribute to the needs of the saints, practice hospitality."
- When you gather with fellow believers, remember to pray for Muslims throughout the year and encourage them to also participate in 30 Days!

And

Thank you for praying through the
5 Days of Prayer for Sikhs.

"My name is Kam. I'm 29 years of age, and I grew up Sikh. As a teenager,
I struggled with depression, brokenness, and addiction to
cannabis. I didn't know how to stop or how to get help.

Then a friend invited me to church. As I spent time with Christians
and heard the message of the Gospel, I experienced the
love of Jesus Christ, and it was like nothing I'd known before.
One night I had a dream where I saw Him - a figure surrounded by
light who I knew was Jesus, the light of the world.

As I began to understand the gospel message, I encountered a reassuring and confident solution to the problem of sin. I knew that I needed a solution
to my sin problem, and I gave my life to Christ.

Slowly, God began to heal my broken heart and my addiction.
Nine years have passed, and I am a devoted husband and a father
to two beautiful boys. I grow deeper in love with Jesus each day.

I ask you to continue praying with me, and others around the world, for Sikhs. God is the only one who can draw people to Himself. He works in and through the prayers of His people. I want Sikhs to know the freedom
and healing that is only available through Jesus Christ."

13 (Ro 14:17; 12:12) Now may the God of hope fill you with all joy
and peace in believing, so that you may abound in hope,
through the power of the Holy Spirit.

21 For all the Athenians and foreigners who lived there spent their time
in nothing else, but either telling or hearing something new.
22 (Ac 25:19) Then Paul stood in the middle of the Areopagus, and said:
"Men of Athens, I -!perceive that in all things you are very religious.

GENESIS 38

Judah and Tamar

1 At that time Judah left his brothers and visited a certain
Adullamite, whose name was Hirah. 2 There Judah saw
the daughter of a certain Canaanite, whose name was Shua,
and he took her and had relations with her. 3 She conceived and bore a son,
and he called his name Er. 4 She conceived again and bore a son,
and she called his name Onan. 5 She again conceived and bore a son
and called his name Shelah. He was at Kezib when she bore him.
6 Judah took a wife for Er his firstborn, whose name was Tamar.
7 But Er, Judah's firstborn, was wicked in the sight of the Lord,
so the Lord killed him.
8 Then Judah said to Onan, "Go have relations with your brother's wife,
and marry her, and raise up descendants for your brother."
9 But Onan knew that the descendant would not be his,
so when he had relations with his brother's wife, he let his semen go on
the ground, so that he would not give a descendant to his brother.
10 What he did displeased the Lord; therefore He killed him also.
11 Then Judah said to Tamar, his daughter-in-law,
"Remain a widow at your father's house
until Shelah my son grows up."
For he thought, "He may die also, just as his brothers did."
So Tamar went and lived in her father's house.
12 As time went on, the daughter of Shua, Judah's wife, died.
After Judah was consoled, he went up to his sheepshearers
in Timnah, he and his friend Hirah the Adullamite.
13 It was told to Tamar, "Your father-in-law is going up to Timnah
to shear his sheep."
14 She took off her widow's clothing,
covered herself with a veil, wrapped herself up,
and sat in an open place, which is by the road to Timnah.
For she saw that Shelah was grown,
and she was not given to him as his wife.
15 When Judah saw her, he thought she was a prostitute,
because she had covered her face.
16 He turned to her by the road and said,
"Come now, let me have relations with you"
(for he did not know that she was his daughter-in-law).
And she said, "What will you give me,
so that you may have relations with me?"
17 And he said, "I will send you a young goat from the flock."
And she said, "Will you give me a pledge, until you send it?"
18 And he said, "What pledge should I give you?"
And she said, "Your signet, your bracelets,
and your staff that is in your hand."
So he gave them to her and had relations with her, and she conceived by him.
19 She arose and went away, and taking off her veil, she put on her widow's clothing.
20 Judah sent the young goat by his friend the Adullamite to receive his pledge from the woman's hand, but he could not find her.
21 Then he asked
the men of the place, "Where is the cult prostitute
who was at Enaim by the road?"
And they said, "There was no prostitute in this place."
22 So he returned to Judah and said, "I cannot find her.
Also, the men of the place said there was no cult prostitute in this place."
23 Judah replied, "Let her keep them for herself,
or we shall be laughed at. I sent this young goat, and you did not find her." 24 After about three months, it was told Judah, "Tamar your daughter-in-law
has turned to prostitution, and what is more,
as a result of prostitution she is pregnant."
Then Judah said, "Bring her forth, and let her be burned!"
25 When she was brought forth, she sent word to her father-in-law,
saying, "By the man to whom these belong am I with child."
And she said, "Please identify whose these are'the signet
and bracelet and staff."
26 Judah recognized them and said, "She has been more righteous than I,
because I did not give her to Shelah my son."
He did not have relations with her again.
27 When it was time for her to give birth, there were twins in her womb.
28 While she was giving birth, one put out his hand, and the midwife took
and tied on his hand a scarlet thread, saying, "This one came out first."
29 But as he drew back his hand, his brother came out. Then she said,
"How have you made a breach for yourself?"
Therefore his name was called Perez.
30 Afterward his brother came out, the one that had the scarlet thread
on his hand, and his name was called Zerah.

Genesis 38
[1] And it came to pass at that time, that Judah went down from his
brethren, and turned in to a certain Adullamite, whose name was Hirah.
[2] And Judah saw there a daughter of a certain Canaanite, whose name was Shuah; and he took her, and went in unto her.
[3] And she conceived, and bare a son; and he called his name Er.
[4] And she conceived again, and bare a son; and she called his name Onan.
[5] And she yet again conceived, and bare a son; and called his name Shelah: and he was at Chezib, when she bare him.
[6] And Judah took a wife for Er his firstborn, whose name was Tamar.
[7] And Er, Judah's firstborn, was wicked in the sight of the LORD; and the LORD slew him.
[8] And Judah said unto Onan, Go in unto thy brother's wife, and marry her,
and raise up seed to thy brother.
[9] And Onan knew that the seed should not be his; and it came to pass, when
he went in unto his brother's wife, that he spilled it on the ground, lest
that he should give seed to his brother.
[10] And the thing which he did displeased the LORD: wherefore he slew him also.
[11] Then said Judah to Tamar his daughter in law, Remain a widow at thy father's house, till Shelah my son be grown: for he said, Lest peradventure
he die also, as his brethren did. And Tamar went and dwelt in her father's house.
[12] And in process of time the daughter of Shuah Judah's wife died; and
Judah was comforted, and went up unto his sheepshearers to Timnath, he and
his friend Hirah the Adullamite.
[13] And it was told Tamar, saying, Behold thy father in law goeth up to Timnath to shear his sheep.
[14] And she put her widow's garments off from her, and covered her with a vail, and wrapped herself, and sat in an open place, which is by the way to Timnath; for she saw that Shelah was grown, and she was not given unto him
to wife.
[15] When Judah saw her, he thought her to be an harlot; because she had covered her face.
[16] And he turned unto her by the way, and said, Go to, I pray thee, let me come in unto thee; (for he knew not that she was his daughter in law.) And
she said, What wilt thou give me, that thou mayest come in unto me?
[17] And he said, I will send thee a kid from the flock. And she said, Wilt thou give me a pledge, till thou send it?
[18] And he said, What pledge shall I give thee? And she said, Thy signet,
and thy bracelets, and thy staff that is in thine hand. And he gave it her,
and came in unto her, and she conceived by him.
[19] And she arose, and went away, and laid by her vail from her, and put on the garments of her widowhood.
[20] And Judah sent the kid by the hand of his friend the Adullamite, to receive his pledge from the woman's hand: but he found her not.
[21] Then he asked the men of that place, saying, Where is the harlot, that
was openly by the way side? And they said, There was no harlot in this
place.
[22] And he returned to Judah, and said, I cannot find her; and also the men
of the place said, that there was no harlot in this place.
[23] And Judah said, Let her take it to her, lest we be shamed: behold, I
sent this kid, and thou hast not found her.
[24] And it came to pass about three months after, that it was told Judah, saying, Tamar thy daughter in law hath played the harlot; and also, behold,
she is with child by whoredom. And Judah said, Bring her forth, and let her
be burnt.
[25] When she was brought forth, she sent to her father in law, saying, By
the man, whose these are, am I with child: and she said, Discern, I pray
thee, whose are these, the signet, and bracelets, and staff.
[26] And Judah acknowledged them, and said, She hath been more righteous
than I; because that I gave her not to Shelah my son. And he knew her again
no more.
[27] And it came to pass in the time of her travail, that, behold, twins
were in her womb.
[28] And it came to pass, when she travailed, that the one put out his hand: and the midwife took and bound upon his hand a scarlet thread, saying, This came out first,
[29] And it came to pass, as he drew back his hand, that, behold, his
brother came out: and she said, How hast thou broken forth? this breach be
upon thee: therefore his name was called Pharez.
[30] And afterward came out his brother, that had the scarlet thread upon
his hand: and his name was called Zarah.

(And King David will be descendant of theirs)

GENESIS 39

Joseph and Potiphar's Wife

1 Now Joseph was brought down to Egypt, and Potiphar, an officer of Pharaoh, captain of the guard, an Egyptian, bought him from the Ishmaelites
who had brought him down there.
2 The Lord was with Joseph, so that he became a prosperous man.
He was in the house of his master, the Egyptian.
3 His master saw that the Lord was with him and that the Lord made all
that he did to prosper.
4 Joseph found favor in his sight and served him.
So he made him overseer over his house,
and all that he had he put under his charge.
5 From the time that he had made him overseer in his house
and over all that he had, the Lord blessed the Egyptian's house
on account of Joseph. So the blessing of the Lord was on all that
he had in the house and in the field.
6 So he left all that he had in Joseph's charge, and he had
no concerns regarding anything except the food he ate.
Now Joseph was handsome and well-built.
7 After a time, his master's wife took notice of Joseph and said,
"Lie with me."
8 But he refused and said to his master's wife, "My master does not
concern himself with anything concerning me in the house,
and he has committed all that he has to my charge.
9 There is none greater in this house than I.
He has kept nothing back from me but you, because you are his wife.
How then can I do this great wickedness and sin against God?"
10 She spoke to Joseph every day, but he did not listen to her
about lying with her or being with her.
11 But it happened one day that Joseph went into the house to do his work,
and none of the men of the house was there.
12 She caught him by his clothing, saying, "Lie with me."
But he left his clothing in her hand and fled and got outside.
13 When she saw that he had left his clothing in her hand
and had fled outside,
14 she called to the men of her house and spoke to them, saying,
"See, he has brought in a Hebrew among us to humiliate us.
He came in to me to lie with me, and I cried out with a loud voice.
15 When he heard that I lifted up my voice and cried out,
he left his clothing with me, fled, and got outside."
16 She laid up his clothing next to her until his master came home.
17 She spoke to him using these words, saying, "The Hebrew servant,
whom you have brought to us, came in to me to mock me.
18 When I lifted up my voice and cried out,
he left his clothing with me and fled outside."
19 When his master heard the words of his wife, which she spoke to him,
saying, "This is what your servant did to me," he became enraged.
20 Joseph's master took him and put him into the prison,
a place where the king's prisoners were confined.
So he was there in the prison. 21 But the Lord was with Joseph
and showed him mercy and gave him favor in
the sight of the keeper of the prison.
22 The keeper of the prison committed all the prisoners
that were in the prison to the charge of Joseph. So whatever
they did there, he was the one responsible for it.
23 The keeper of the prison did not concern himself with anything
that was under Joseph's charge because the Lord was with him.
And whatever he did, the Lord made it to prosper.

Genesis 39
[1] And Joseph was brought down to Egypt; and Potiphar, an officer of
Pharaoh, captain of the guard, an Egyptian, bought him of the hands of the Ishmeelites, which had brought him down thither.
[2] And the LORD was with Joseph, and he was a prosperous man; and he was in the house of his master the Egyptian.
[3] And his master saw that the LORD was with him, and that the LORD made
all that he did to prosper in his hand.
[4] And Joseph found grace in his sight, and he served him: and he made him overseer over his house, and all that he had he put into his hand.
[5] And it came to pass from the time that he had made him overseer in his house, and over all that he had, that the LORD blessed the Egyptian's house
for Joseph's sake; and the blessing of the LORD was upon all that he had in
the house, and in the field.
[6] And he left all that he had in Joseph's hand; and he knew not ought he
had, save the bread which he did eat. And Joseph was a goodly person, and
well favoured.
[7] And it came to pass after these things, that his master's wife cast her eyes upon Joseph; and she said, Lie with me.
[8] But he refused, and said unto his master's wife, Behold, my master
wotteth not what is with me in the house, and he hath committed all that he hath to my hand;
[9] There is none greater in this house than I; neither hath he kept back
any thing from me but thee, because thou art his wife: how then can I do
this great wickedness, and sin against God?
[10] And it came to pass, as she spake to Joseph day by day, that he
hearkened not unto her, to lie by her, or to be with her.
[11] And it came to pass about this time, that Joseph went into the house to
do his business; and there was none of the men of the house there within.
[12] And she caught him by his garment, saying, Lie with me: and he left his garment in her hand, and fled, and got him out.
[13] And it came to pass, when she saw that he had left his garment in her hand, and was fled forth,
[14] That she called unto the men of her house, and spake unto them, saying, See, he hath brought in an Hebrew unto us to mock us; he came in unto me to
lie with me, and I cried with a loud voice:
[15] And it came to pass, when he heard that I lifted up my voice and cried, that he left his garment with me, and fled, and got him out.
[16] And she laid up his garment by her, until his lord came home.
[17] And she spake unto him according to these words, saying, The Hebrew servant, which thou hast brought unto us, came in unto me to mock me:
[18] And it came to pass, as I lifted up my voice and cried, that he left
his garment with me, and fled out.
[19] And it came to pass, when his master heard the words of his wife, which she spake unto him, saying, After this manner did thy servant to me; that
his wrath was kindled.
[20] And Joseph's master took him, and put him into the prison, a place
where the king's prisoners were bound: and he was there in the prison.
[21] But the LORD was with Joseph, and shewed him mercy, and gave him favour
in the sight of the keeper of the prison.
[22] And the keeper of the prison committed to Joseph's hand all the
prisoners that were in the prison; and whatsoever they did there, he was the doer of it.
[23] The keeper of the prison looked not to any thing that was under his
hand; because the LORD was with him, and that which he did, the LORD made it
to prosper.

1 Chronicles 2

From Judah to David
3 (Ge 38:2-10; 46:12) The sons of Judah were
Er, Onan, and Shelah: These three were born to him by the daughter of Shua
the Canaanitess. Now Er, the firstborn of Judah, was evil in the sight
of the Lord, and He put him to death.
4 (Mt 1:3; Ge 38:13-30; Ru 4:12) Then Tamar his daughter-in-law bore
Perez and Zerah for him. In all, Judah had five sons.
5 (Ge 46:12; Nu 26:21) The sons of Perez were
Hezron and Hamul.
6 The sons of Zerah were
Zimri, Ethan, Heman, Kalkol, and Dara, five of them in all.
7 (Jos 6:18)The sons of Karmi were
Achar, the troubler of Israel, who acted unfaithfully in regard to the ban.
8 The son of Ethan was
Azariah.

3 The sons of Judah; Er, and Onan, and Shelah: which three were born
unto him of the daughter of Shua the Canaanitess. And Er, the firstborn
of Judah, was evil in the sight of the LORD; and he slew him.
4 And Tamar his daughter in law bare him Pharez and Zerah.
All the sons of Judah were five.
5 The sons of Pharez; Hezron, and Hamul.
6 And the sons of Zerah;
Zimri, and Ethan, and Heman, and Calcol, and Dara: five of them in all.
7 And the sons of Carmi; Achar, the troubler of Israel, who transgressed
in the thing accursed.
8 And the sons of Ethan; Azariah.

GENESIS 40

Joseph Interprets Dreams

1 Sometime after this, the cupbearer of the king of Egypt
and his baker offended their lord, the king of Egypt.
2 Pharaoh was angry with his two officials,
with the chief of the cupbearers and with the chief of the bakers.
3 So he put them in confinement in the house of the captain of the guard,
in the prison, the place where Joseph was confined.
4 The captain of the guard charged Joseph with them,
and he attended to them.
They continued to be in confinement for some time.
5 Then the cupbearer and the baker for the king of Egypt,
who were confined in the prison, both had a dream the same night,
each man with his own dream
and each dream with its own interpretation.
6 Joseph came in to them in the morning and looked at them
and realized they were sad.
7 So he asked Pharaoh's officials who were with him
in the care of his lord's house,
saying, "Why do you look so sad today?"
8 And they said to him, "We have dreamed a dream,
and there is no interpreter for it."
Then Joseph said to them, "Do not interpretations belong to God?
Please tell them to me."
9 The chief cupbearer told his dream to Joseph and said to him,
"In my dream, a vine was in front of me.
10 And in the vine there were three branches. As it budded,
its blossoms shot forth and its clusters brought forth ripe grapes.
11 Pharaoh's cup was in my hand, and I took the grapes,
and pressed them into Pharaoh's cup, and I put the cup into Pharaoh's hand."
12 Joseph said to him, "This is the interpretation of it. The three branches are three days.
13 Within three days Pharaoh will lift up your head
and restore you to your place, and you will deliver Pharaoh's cup
into his hand in the same way you did before when you were his cupbearer.
14 But remember me when it is well with you, and show kindness,
I pray you, to me, and make mention of me to Pharaoh,
and get me out of this house.
15 For I was indeed kidnapped
out of the land of the Hebrews, and I have done nothing
that they should put me in the dungeon."
16 When the chief baker saw that the interpretation was good,
he said to Joseph, "I also was in my dream,
and I had three white baskets on my head.
17 In the uppermost basket there was all manner of baked goods
for Pharaoh, and the birds ate them out of the basket on my head."
18 Joseph answered and said, "This is the interpretation: The three baskets
are three days. 19 Within three days Pharaoh will lift your head from off you and will hang you on a tree, and the birds will eat your flesh from you."
20 It happened on the third day, which was Pharaoh's birthday,
that he made a feast for all his servants. He lifted up the heads
of the chief cupbearer and the chief baker among his servants.
21 He restored the chief cupbearer to his position again,
and he put the cup into Pharaoh's hand.
22 However, he hanged the chief baker,
just as Joseph had interpreted to them.
23 Yet, the chief cupbearer did not remember Joseph, but forgot him.

Genesis 40
[1] And it came to pass after these things, that the butler of the king of Egypt and his baker had offended their lord the king of Egypt.
[2] And Pharaoh was wroth against two of his officers, against the chief of
the butlers, and against the chief of the bakers.
[3] And he put them in ward in the house of the captain of the guard, into
the prison, the place where Joseph was bound.
[4] And the captain of the guard charged Joseph with them, and he served
them: and they continued a season in ward.
[5] And they dreamed a dream both of them, each man his dream in one night, each man according to the interpretation of his dream, the butler and the
baker of the king of Egypt, which were bound in the prison.
[6] And Joseph came in unto them in the morning, and looked upon them, and, behold, they were sad.
[7] And he asked Pharaoh's officers that were with him in the ward of his lord's house, saying, Wherefore look ye so sadly to day?
[8] And they said unto him, We have dreamed a dream, and there is no interpreter of it. And Joseph said unto them, Do not interpretations belong
to God? tell me them, I pray you.
[9] And the chief butler told his dream to Joseph, and said to him, In my dream, behold, a vine was before me;
[10] And in the vine were three branches: and it was as though it budded,
and her blossoms shot forth; and the clusters thereof brought forth ripe grapes:
[11] And Pharaoh's cup was in my hand: and I took the grapes, and pressed
them into Pharaoh's cup, and I gave the cup into Pharaoh's hand.
[12] And Joseph said unto him, This is the interpretation of it: The three branches are three days:
[13] Yet within three days shall Pharaoh lift up thine head, and restore
thee unto thy place: and thou shalt deliver Pharaoh's cup into his hand,
after the former manner when thou wast his butler.
[14] But think on me when it shall be well with thee, and shew kindness, I
pray thee, unto me, and make mention of me unto Pharaoh, and bring me out of this house:
[15] For indeed I was stolen away out of the land of the Hebrews: and here
also have I done nothing that they should put me into the dungeon.
[16] When the chief baker saw that the interpretation was good, he said unto Joseph, I also was in my dream, and, behold, I had three white baskets on my head:
[17] And in the uppermost basket there was of all manner of bakemeats for Pharaoh; and the birds did eat them out of the basket upon my head.
[18] And Joseph answered and said, This is the interpretation thereof: The three baskets are three days:
[19] Yet within three days shall Pharaoh lift up thy head from off thee, and shall hang thee on a tree; and the birds shall eat thy flesh from off thee. [20] And it came to pass the third day, which was Pharaoh's birthday, that
he made a feast unto all his servants: and he lifted up the head of the
chief butler and of the chief baker among his servants.
[21] And he restored the chief butler unto his butlership again; and he gave the cup into Pharaoh's hand:
[22] But he hanged the chief baker: as Joseph had interpreted to them.
[23] Yet did not the chief butler remember Joseph, but forgat him.

Strange Places

Esther 2:3-4,12-17

2 (1Ki 1:2) So the king's servants who attended him said,
"Let beautiful young virgins be sought for the king!
3 (Est 1:1-2) Let the king appoint officers in all the provinces
of his kingdom so that they may gather all the beautiful young virgins
to the citadel of Susa, to the harem under the custody of Hegai the king's eunuch, who is in charge of the harem, and let ointments and cosmetics
be given to them.
4 May the young woman who pleases the king be queen instead of Vashti."
And the idea pleased the king, so he acted accordingly.
12 The turn came for each young woman to go in to King Ahasuerus,
after being twelve months under the regulations for the women,
since this was the regular period of their beautifying,
six months with oil of myrrh and six months with spices
and ointments for women. 13When the young woman went in to the king
in this way, she was given whatever she desired to take with her
from the harem to take to the king's palace.
14 (Est 4:11) In the evening she went in, and in the morning
she returned to the second harem in custody of Shaashgaz,
the king's eunuch, who was in charge of the concubines.
She did not go in to the king again unless the king delighted in her
and called for her by name.
15 (Est 9:29) When the turn came for Esther, the daughter of Abihail
the uncle of Mordecai, who had taken her as his own daughter, to go in to
the king, she asked for nothing except what theking's eunuch Hegai,
who had charge of the women, advised. Now Esther obtained favor in the sight
of all who saw her.
16 So Esther was taken to King Ahasuerus at his royal house in the month
of Tebeth, which is the tenth month, in the seventh year of his reign.
17 (Est 1:11) The king loved Esther more than any other woman
because she had gained grace and favor in his sight more
than all the -!virgins. So he set the royal crown on her head
and made her queen instead of Vashti.

[3] And let the king appoint officers in all the provinces of his kingdom,
that they may gather together all the fair young virgins unto Shushan the palace, to the house of the women unto the custody of Hege the king's chamberlain, keeper of the women; and let their things for purification be given them:
[4] And let the maiden which pleaseth the king be queen instead of Vashti.
And the thing pleased the king; and he did so.
[12] Now when every maid's turn was come to go in to king Ahasuerus, after
that she had been twelve months, according to the manner of the women, (for
so were the days of their purifications accomplished, to wit, six months
with oil of myrrh, and six months with sweet odours, and with other things
for the purifying of the women;)
[13] Then thus came every maiden unto the king; whatsoever she desired was given her to go with her out of the house of the women unto the king's house. [14] In the evening she went, and on the morrow she returned into the second house of the women, to the custody of Shaashgaz, the king's chamberlain,
which kept the concubines: she came in unto the king no more, except the
king delighted in her, and that she were called by name.
[15] Now when the turn of Esther, the daughter of Abihail the uncle of Mordecai, who had taken her for his daughter, was come to go in unto the
king, she required nothing but what Hegai the king's chamberlain, the keeper
of the women, appointed. And Esther obtained favour in the sight of all
them that looked upon her.
[16] So Esther was taken unto king Ahasuerus into his house royal in the
tenth month, which is the month Tebeth, in the seventh year of his reign.
[17] And the king loved Esther above all the women, and she obtained grace
and favour in his sight more than all the virgins; so that he set the royal crown upon her head, and made her queen instead of Vashti.

God, why is this happening? Is this really your plan for us?

As a husband and a dad of young children, those questions and more swirled in my mind as I wrestled with a serious cancer diagnosis. What's more, our family had just served with a missions team that had seen many children receive Jesus as their Savior. God had been bringing forth evident fruit. There was so much joy. And now this?

Esther likely poured out questions and prayers to God after she was plucked from a loving home and thrust into a strange new world (Esther 2:8). Her
cousin Mordecai had raised her as his own daughter after she'd been
orphaned (v. 7). But then she was placed in a king's harem and eventually elevated to serve as his queen (v. 17). Mordecai was understandably concerned about what "was happening to" Esther (v. 11). But in time, the two realized that God had called her to be in a place of great power
"for such a time as this" (4:14)-a place that allowed for her people to
be saved from destruction (chs. 7-8).

It's evident that God providentially placed Esther in a strange place as part of His perfect plan. He did the same with me. As I endured a lengthy battle with cancer, I was privileged to share my faith with many, many patients and caregivers. What strange place has He led you to? Trust Him.
He's good, and so are His plans (Romans 11:33-36).

Reflect & Pray

When has God led you to a strange place?
Why can you trust in His perfect plans?

Dear God, help me to trust You even when
I don't understand what You're doing.

John 3:16-17

16 (Ro 5:8; 1Jn 4:9-10; Jn 1:18) "For God so loved the world
that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in
Him should not perish, but have eternal life.
17 (1Jn 4:14; Lk 19:10) For God did not send His Son into
the world to condemn the world, but that the world
through Him might be saved."

16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son,
that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. 17 For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world;
but that the world through him might be saved.

Jeremiah 10

The True God and Idols

Jer 51:15-19
1 Hear the word which the Lord speaks to you, O house of Israel.
2 (Lev 20:23; 18:3) Thus says the Lord: Do not learn the way of the nations;
do not be terrified at the signs of heaven,
although the nations are terrified at them.
3 (Isa 44:9-20; 45:20) For the customs of the people are vain;
for with the axe one cuts a tree out of the forest,
the work of the hands of the workman.
4 (Isa 40:19-20) They deck it with silver and with gold;
they fasten it with nails and with hammers so that it may not move.
5 (Isa 46:7; 1Co 12:2; Isa 41:23-24) They are as a scarecrow
in a cucumber field, but do not speak; they must be carried,
because they cannot walk. Do not be afraid of them, for they cannot do evil, nor can they do good.
6 (Ex 15:11; Ps 48:1) There is no one like You, O Lord.
You are great, and Your name is great in might.
7 (Rev 15:4; Ps 22:28 ) Who would not fear You, O King of the nations?
Indeed, it is Your due. For among all the wise men of the nations,
and in all their kingdoms, there is no one like You.
8 (Isa 41:29; Jer 10:14) But they are altogether unthinking and foolish;
the tree is a doctrine of vanities.
9 (Ps 115:4; Da 10:5) Silver spread into plates is brought from Tarshish,
and gold from Uphaz, the work of the workman and of the hands of the founder; blue and purple are their clothing; they all are the work of skilled men.
10 (Ps 76:7; Na 1:6 ) But the Lord is the true God;
He is the living God and an everlasting King. At His wrath the earth trembles, and the nations cannot endure His indignation.
11 (Ps 96:5; Isa 2:18) Thus you shall say to them:
The gods that have not made the heavens and the earth,
even they shall perish from the earth and from under these heavens.
12 (Ge 1:1; Job 9:8) He has made the earth by His power.
He has established the world by His wisdom
and has stretched out the heavens by His discretion.
13 (Ps 135:7; Job 38:34-35) When He utters His voice, there is a multitude
of waters in the heavens,
and He causes the vapors to ascend from the remote parts of the earth;
He makes lightning with rain, and brings out the wind from His storehouses.
14 (Jer 10:8; Pr 30:2) Every man is stupid, without knowledge;
every goldsmith is put to shame by an idol;
for his molded image is false, and there is no breath in them.
15 (Isa 41:24; Jer 14:22) They are vain and a work of mockery;
in the time of their punishment they shall perish.
16 (Dt 32:9; Jer 31:35) The portion of Jacob is not like them,
for He is the Maker of all things,
and Israel is the rod of His inheritance.
The Lord of Hosts is His name.

[1] Hear ye the word which the LORD speaketh unto you, O house of Israel:
[2] Thus saith the LORD, Learn not the way of the heathen, and be not
dismayed at the signs of heaven; for the heathen are dismayed at them.
[3] For the customs of the people are vain: for one cutteth a tree out of
the forest, the work of the hands of the workman, with the axe.
[4] They deck it with silver and with gold; they fasten it with nails and
with hammers, that it move not.
[5] They are upright as the palm tree, but speak not: they must needs be
borne, because they cannot go. Be not afraid of them; for they cannot do
evil, neither also is it in them to do good.
[6] Forasmuch as there is none like unto thee, O LORD; thou art great, and
thy name is great in might.
[7] Who would not fear thee, O King of nations? for to thee doth it
appertain: forasmuch as among all the wise men of the nations, and in all
their kingdoms, there is none like unto thee.
[8] But they are altogether brutish and foolish: the stock is a doctrine of vanities.
[9] Silver spread into plates is brought from Tarshish, and gold from Uphaz, the work of the workman, and of the hands of the founder: blue and
purple is their clothing: they are all the work of cunning men.
[10] But the LORD is the true God, he is the living God, and an everlasting king: at his wrath the earth shall tremble, and the nations shall not be
able to abide his indignation.
[11] Thus shall ye say unto them, The gods that have not made the heavens
and the earth, even they shall perish from the earth, and from under these heavens.
[12] He hath made the earth by his power, he hath established the world by
his wisdom, and hath stretched out the heavens by his discretion.
[13] When he uttereth his voice, there is a multitude of waters in the
heavens, and he causeth the vapours to ascend from the ends of the earth; he maketh lightnings with rain, and bringeth forth the wind out of his
treasures.
[14] Every man is brutish in his knowledge: every founder is confounded by
the graven image: for his molten image is falsehood, and there is no breath
in them.
[15] They are vanity, and the work of errors: in the time of their
visitation they shall perish.
[16] The portion of Jacob is not like them: for he is the former of all
things; and Israel is the rod of his inheritance: The LORD of hosts is his name.

The Exile Prophesied

17( Eze 12:3-12; Jer 6:1) Gather up your wares out of the land,
O inhabitant of the fortress.
18 (1Sa 25:29) For thus says the Lord: I will sling out
the inhabitants of the land at this time,
and will distress them that they may be found.
19 (Mic 7:9; Jer 4:31) Woe is me because of my brokenness!
My wound is grievous. But I said,
"Truly this is an illness, and I must bear it."
20 (Jer 4:20; 31:15; Isa 54:2) My tabernacle is devastated,
and all my cords are broken. My sons have gone from me and are no more.
There is no one to spread my tent anymore, and to set up my curtains.
21 (Jer 2:8; 10:8) For the shepherds have become unthinking
and have not sought the Lord. Therefore they have not prospered,
and all their flocks are scattered.
22 (Jer 9:11) Listen! The sound of the report has come,
and a great commotion out of the north country,
to make the cities of Judah desolate and a den of jackals.

[17] Gather up thy wares out of the land, O inhabitant of the fortress.
[18] For thus saith the LORD, Behold, I will sling out the inhabitants of
the land at this once, and will distress them, that they may find it so.
[19] Woe is me for my hurt! my wound is grievous: but I said, Truly this is
a grief, and I must bear it.
[20] My tabernacle is spoiled, and all my cords are broken: my children are gone forth of me, and they are not: there is none to stretch forth my tent
any more, and to set up my curtains.
[21] For the pastors are become brutish, and have not sought the LORD: therefore they shall not prosper, and all their flocks shall be scattered.
[22] Behold, the noise of the bruit is come, and a great commotion out of
the north country, to make the cities of Judah desolate, and a den of
dragons.

The Prayer of Jeremiah

23 (Pr 20:24; 16:1) O Lord, I know that the way of man is not in himself;
it is not in man who walks to direct his steps.
24 (Ps 6:1; 38:1) O Lord, correct me, but with justice,
not in Your anger, lest You bring me to nothing.
25 (Ps 79:6-7; Jer 8:16) Pour out Your fury upon the nations
that do not know You
and upon the families that do not call on Your name;
for they have eaten up Jacob and devoured him, and consumed him,
and have made his habitation desolate.

[23] O LORD, I know that the way of man is not in himself: it is not in man that walketh to direct his steps.
[24] O LORD, correct me, but with judgment; not in thine anger, lest thou
bring me to nothing.
[25] Pour out thy fury upon the heathen that know thee not, and upon the families that call not on thy name: for they have eaten up Jacob, and
devoured him, and consumed him, and have made his habitation desolate.

Jeremiah 11

The Broken Covenant

1 The word that came to Jeremiah from the Lord, saying:
2 (Jer 11:6; Ex 19:5) Hear the words of this covenant,
and speak to the men of Judah and to the inhabitants of Jerusalem.
3 (Dt 27:26) And say you to them, Thus says the Lord God of Israel:
Cursed is the man who does not obey the words of this covenant,
4 (Lev 26:12; Dt 4:20) which I commanded your fathers in the day
that I brought them out of the land of Egypt, from the iron furnace,
saying, Obey My voice, and do according to all which I command you.
So you shall be My people, and I will be your God,
5 (Dt 7:12-13; Ps 105:9-11) that I may perform the oath
which I have sworn to your fathers, to give them a land flowing
with milk and honey, as it is this day.
Then I answered and said, "So be it, O Lord."
6 (Ro 2:13; Jas 1:22) Then the Lord said to me: Proclaim all these words
in the cities of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem:
saying, Hear the words of this covenant, and do them.
7 (Ex 15:26; 1Sa 8:9) For I earnestly warned your fathers in the day that
I brought them up out of the land of Egypt, even to this day,
rising early and warning, saying, Obey My voice.
8 (Jer 7:24; 7:26) Yet they did not obey or incline their ear,
but everyone walked in the imagination of their evil heart.
Therefore I will bring upon them all the words of this covenant,
which I commanded them to do, but which they did not do.
9 (Hos 6:9) The Lord said to me: A conspiracy has been found among
the men of Judah and among the inhabitants of Jerusalem.
10 (Dt 31:16; 1Sa 15:11) They have turned back to the iniquities
of their forefathers who refused to hear My words.
And they have gone after other gods to serve them.
The house of Israel and the house of Judah have broken
My covenant which I made with their fathers.
11 (Pr 1:28; Isa 1:15) Therefore thus says the Lord, Surely,
I will bring calamity upon them which they will not be able to escape.
And though they cry to Me, I will not listen to them.
12 (Dt 32:37; Jer 2:28) Then the cities of Judah and inhabitants
of Jerusalem will go and cry to the gods to whom they offer incense.
But they will not save them at all in the time of their trouble.
13 (2Ki 23:13; Jer 2:28) For according to the number of your cities
are your gods, O Judah. And according to the number of the streets
of Jerusalem you have set up altars to that shameful thing,
even altars to burn incense to Baal.
14 (Jer 11:11; Ex 32:10) Therefore do not pray for this people,
nor lift up a cry or prayer for them. For I will not hear them in the time
that they cry to Me because of their trouble.
15 (Pr 2:14) What right has My beloved in My house,
seeing that she has done many lewd deeds?
Can the sacrificial meat take away from you your disaster,
so that you can rejoice while doing evil?
16 (Ps 52:8; Isa 27:11) The Lord called your name,
"A green olive tree, fair in fruit and form."
With the noise of a great tumult
He has kindled fire upon it,
and its branches are broken.
17 (Isa 5:2; Jer 2:21) For the Lord of Hosts, who planted you,
has pronounced disaster against you, because of the evil of the house
of Israel and of the house of Judah, which they have done against
themselves to provoke Me to anger in offering incense to Baal.

[1] The word that came to Jeremiah from the LORD, saying,
[2] Hear ye the words of this covenant, and speak unto the men of Judah,
and to the inhabitants of Jerusalem;
[3] And say thou unto them, Thus saith the LORD God of Israel; Cursed be
the man that obeyeth not the words of this covenant,
[4] Which I commanded your fathers in the day that I brought them forth out
of the land of Egypt, from the iron furnace, saying, Obey my voice, and do them, according to all which I command you: so shall ye be my people, and I will be your God:
[5] That I may perform the oath which I have sworn unto your fathers, to
give them a land flowing with milk and honey, as it is this day. Then
answered I, and said, So be it, O LORD.
[6] Then the LORD said unto me, Proclaim all these words in the cities of Judah, and in the streets of Jerusalem, saying, Hear ye the words of this covenant, and do them.
[7] For I earnestly protested unto your fathers in the day that I brought
them up out of the land of Egypt, even unto this day, rising early and protesting, saying, Obey my voice.
[8] Yet they obeyed not, nor inclined their ear, but walked every one in the imagination of their evil heart: therefore I will bring upon them all the
words of this covenant, which I commanded them to do; but they did them not. [9] And the LORD said unto me, A conspiracy is found among the men of Judah, and among the inhabitants of Jerusalem.
[10] They are turned back to the iniquities of their forefathers, which
refused to hear my words; and they went after other gods to serve them: the house of Israel and the house of Judah have broken my covenant which I made with their fathers.
[11] Therefore thus saith the LORD, Behold, I will bring evil upon them,
which they shall not be able to escape; and though they shall cry unto me, I will not hearken unto them.
[12] Then shall the cities of Judah and inhabitants of Jerusalem go, and cry unto the gods unto whom they offer incense: but they shall not save them at
all in the time of their trouble.
[13] For according to the number of thy cities were thy gods, O Judah; and according to the number of the streets of Jerusalem have ye set up altars to that shameful thing, even altars to burn incense unto Baal.
[14] Therefore pray not thou for this people, neither lift up a cry or
prayer for them: for I will not hear them in the time that they cry unto me
for their trouble.
[15] What hath my beloved to do in mine house, seeing she hath wrought
lewdness with many, and the holy flesh is passed from thee? when thou doest evil, then thou rejoicest.
[16] The LORD called thy name, A green olive tree, fair, and of goodly
fruit: with the noise of a great tumult he hath kindled fire upon it, and
the branches of it are broken.
[17] For the LORD of hosts, that planted thee, hath pronounced evil against thee, for the evil of the house of Israel and of the house of Judah, which
they have done against themselves to provoke me to anger in offering incense unto Baal.

Jeremiah's Life Threatened

18 (1Sa 23:11-12; 2Ki 6:9-10) The Lord has made it known to me and I knew it; then You showed me their deeds.
19 (Ps 83:4; Jer 18:18) But I was like a gentle lamb that is brought
to the slaughter, and I did not know that they had devised plots
against me, saying,
"Let us destroy the tree with the fruit,
and let us cut him off from the land of the living
so that his name may be remembered no more."
20 (Ps 7:9; Jer 20:12) But, O Lord of Hosts, who judges righteously,
who tries the feelings and the heart,
let me see Your vengeance on them,
for to You I have revealed my cause.
21 (Isa 30:10; Jer 12:5-6) Therefore thus says the Lord of the men
of Anathoth who seek your life, saying,
"Do not prophesy in the name of the Lord so that you not die by our hand."
22 (Jer 18:21; 2Ch 36:17) Therefore thus says the Lord of Hosts:
I will punish them. The young men shall die by the sword.
Their sons and their daughters shall die by famine.
23 (Jer 23:12; Hos 9:7) And there shall be no remnant of them,
for I will bring calamity upon the men of Anathoth,
even the year of their punishment.

[18] And the LORD hath given me knowledge of it, and I know it: then thou shewedst me their doings.
[19] But I was like a lamb or an ox that is brought to the slaughter; and I knew not that they had devised devices against me, saying, Let us destroy
the tree with the fruit thereof, and let us cut him off from the land of the living, that his name may be no more remembered.
[20] But, O LORD of hosts, that judgest righteously, that triest the reins
and the heart, let me see thy vengeance on them: for unto thee have I
revealed my cause.
[21] Therefore thus saith the LORD of the men of Anathoth, that seek thy
life, saying, Prophesy not in the name of the LORD, that thou die not by our hand:
[22] Therefore thus saith the LORD of hosts, Behold, I will punish them: the young men shall die by the sword; their sons and their daughters shall die
by famine:
[23] And there shall be no remnant of them: for I will bring evil upon the
men of Anathoth, even the year of their visitation.

Jeremiah 12

Jeremiah's Plea

1 (Job 12:6; Ps 51:4) Righteous are You, O Lord,
that I plead with You.
Indeed, let me talk with You about matters of justice.
Why does the way of the wicked prosper?
Why are all those happy who deal very treacherously?
2 (Isa 29:13; Jer 11:17) You have planted them; indeed, they have taken root; they grow; indeed, they bring forth fruit.
You are near in their mouth,
but far from their mind.
3 (Jer 17:18; Jas 5:5) But You, O Lord, know me;
You have seen me and tested my heart toward You.
Pull them out like sheep for the slaughter,
and prepare them for the day of slaughter.
4 (Jer 9:10; 4:25; Ps 107:34) How long shall the land mourn
and the herbs of every field wither?
For the wickedness of those who dwell in it,
the beasts and the birds have been snatched away,
because they said,
"He will not see our latter end."

[1] Righteous art thou, O LORD, when I plead with thee: yet let me talk with thee of thy judgments: Wherefore doth the way of the wicked prosper?
wherefore are all they happy that deal very treacherously?
[2] Thou hast planted them, yea, they have taken root: they grow, yea, they bring forth fruit: thou art near in their mouth, and far from their reins.
[3] But thou, O LORD, knowest me: thou hast seen me, and tried mine heart toward thee: pull them out like sheep for the slaughter, and prepare them
for the day of slaughter.
[4] How long shall the land mourn, and the herbs of every field wither, for
the wickedness of them that dwell therein? the beasts are consumed, and the birds; because they said, He shall not see our last end.

God Answers Jeremiah

5 (Jer 49:19; 50:44) If you have run with the footmen,
and they have wearied you,
then how can you contend with horses?
And if in the land of peace in which you trusted, they wearied you,
then how will you do in the thicket of the Jordan?
6 (Pr 26:25; Jer 9:4) For even your brothers and the household of your father, even they have dealt treacherously with you.
Indeed, they have cried aloud after you.
Do not believe them
though they speak fair words to you.
7 (Jer 11:15; Isa 2:6) I have forsaken My house,
I have abandoned My heritage;
I have given the dearly beloved of My soul
into the hand of her enemies.
8 (Hos 9:15; Am 6:8) My heritage is to Me as a lion in the forest.
She cries out against Me; therefore I have hated her.
9 (Isa 56:9; Jer 7:33) My heritage is to Me
as a speckled vulture;
the vultures all around are against her.
Come, assemble all the beasts of the field,
bring them to devour.
10 (Isa 5:1-7; 63:18) Many shepherds have destroyed My vineyard;
they have trodden My portion under foot;
they have made My pleasant portion
a desolate wilderness.
11 (Isa 42:25; Jer 23:10) They have made it desolate,
and being desolate, it mourns to Me.
The whole land has been made desolate,
because no man lays it to heart.
12 (Jer 47:6; Isa 34:6) The destroyers have come
upon all high places through the wilderness,
for the sword of the Lord shall devour
from the one end of the land even to the other end of the land.
No one shall have peace.
13 (Dt 28:38; Mic 6:15) They have sown wheat, but reap thorns;
they have strained themselves, but shall not profit.
And they shall be ashamed of your harvest
because of the fierce anger of the Lord.
14 (Zec 2:8; Dt 30:3)Thus says the Lord: Against all My evil neighbors
who touch the inheritance which I have caused My people Israel
to inherit, I will pluck them out of their land and pluck out
the house of Judah from among them.
15 (Jer 48:47; 49:6; 49:39) It shall come to pass that after
I have plucked them out, I will again have compassion on them,
and will bring them back, every man to his heritage,
and every man to his land.
16 (Jer 4:2; Jos 23:7; Zep 1:5) It shall come to pass if they will
diligently learn the ways of My people, to swear by My name,
"As the Lord lives," as they taught My people to swear by Baal,
then they will be built up in the midst of My people.
17 (Isa 60:12; Ps 2:8-12) But if they will not obey, I will utterly pluck up and destroy that nation, says the Lord.

[5] If thou hast run with the footmen, and they have wearied thee, then how canst thou contend with horses? and if in the land of peace, wherein thou trustedst, they wearied thee, then how wilt thou do in the swelling of Jordan? [6] For even thy brethren, and the house of thy father, even they have dealt treacherously with thee; yea, they have called a multitude after thee:
believe them not, though they speak fair words unto thee.
[7] I have forsaken mine house, I have left mine heritage; I have given the dearly beloved of my soul into the hand of her enemies.
[8] Mine heritage is unto me as a lion in the forest; it crieth out against
me: therefore have I hated it.
[9] Mine heritage is unto me as a speckled bird, the birds round about are against her; come ye, assemble all the beasts of the field, come to devour. [10] Many pastors have destroyed my vineyard, they have trodden my portion under foot, they have made my pleasant portion a desolate wilderness.
[11] They have made it desolate, and being desolate it mourneth unto me; the whole land is made desolate, because no man layeth it to heart.
[12] The spoilers are come upon all high places through the wilderness: for
the sword of the LORD shall devour from the one end of the land even to the other end of the land: no flesh shall have peace.
[13] They have sown wheat, but shall reap thorns: they have put themselves
to pain, but shall not profit: and they shall be ashamed of your revenues because of the fierce anger of the LORD.
[14] Thus saith the LORD against all mine evil neighbours, that touch the inheritance which I have caused my people Israel to inherit; Behold, I will pluck them out of their land, and pluck out the house of Judah from among
them.
[15] And it shall come to pass, after that I have plucked them out I will return, and have compassion on them, and will bring them again, every man to his heritage, and every man to his land.
[16] And it shall come to pass, if they will diligently learn the ways of my people, to swear by my name, The LORD liveth; as they taught my people to
swear by Baal; then shall they be built in the midst of my people.
[17] But if they will not obey, I will utterly pluck up and destroy that nation, saith the LORD.

Jeremiah 13

A Linen Sash

1 (Jer 13:11) Thus says the Lord to me, "Go and buy yourself a linen waistband and put it upon your loins, and do not put it in water."
2 (Isa 20:2; Eze 2:8) So I bought a waistband according to the word
of the Lord and put it on my loins.
3 The word of the Lord came to me the second time, saying,
4 "Take the waistband that you have, which is upon your loins,
and arise, go to the Euphrates and hide it there in a hole of the rock."
5 (Ex 40:16; 39:42-43) So I went and hid it by the Euphrates,
as the Lord had commanded me.
6 After many days the Lord said to me, "Arise, go to the Euphrates
and take the waistband from there, which I commanded you to hide there."
7 Then I went to the Euphrates, and dug, and took the waistband
from the place where I had hidden it. But the waistband was destroyed.
It was profitable for nothing.
8 Then the word of the Lord came to me:
9 (Lev 26:19; Isa 2:10-17) Thus says the Lord: After this manner I will
destroy the pride of Judah and the great pride of Jerusalem.
10 (Jer 16:12; 9:14) This evil people, who refuse to hear My words,
who walk in the imagination of their hearts, and walk after other gods,
to serve them, and to worship them, shall be even as this waistband
which is good for nothing.
11 (Jer 33:9; Ex 19:5-6) For as the waistband cleaves to the loins
of a man, so I have caused the whole house of Israel
and the whole house of Judah to cleave to Me,
says the Lord, so that they might be to Me a people for renown,
and for a praise, and for a glory; but they would not listen.

[1] Thus saith the LORD unto me, Go and get thee a linen girdle, and put it upon thy loins, and put it not in water.
[2] So I got a girdle according to the word of the LORD, and put it on my loins.
[3] And the word of the LORD came unto me the second time, saying,
[4] Take the girdle that thou hast got, which is upon thy loins, and arise,
go to Euphrates, and hide it there in a hole of the rock.
[5] So I went, and hid it by Euphrates, as the LORD commanded me.
[6] And it came to pass after many days, that the LORD said unto me, Arise,
go to Euphrates, and take the girdle from thence, which I commanded thee to hide there.
[7] Then I went to Euphrates, and digged, and took the girdle from the place where I had hid it: and, behold, the girdle was marred, it was profitable
for nothing.
[8] Then the word of the LORD came unto me, saying,
[9] Thus saith the LORD, After this manner will I mar the pride of Judah,
and the great pride of Jerusalem.
[10] This evil people, which refuse to hear my words, which walk in the imagination of their heart, and walk after other gods, to serve them, and to worship them, shall even be as this girdle, which is good for nothing.
[11] For as the girdle cleaveth to the loins of a man, so have I caused to cleave unto me the whole house of Israel and the whole house of Judah, saith the LORD; that they might be unto me for a people, and for a name, and
for a praise, and for a glory: but they would not hear.

The Metaphor of Wine Bottles

12 Therefore you shall speak to them this word: Thus says the Lord
God of Israel: Every bottle shall be filled with wine. And when they say
to you, "Do we not certainly know that every bottle should be filled
with wine?"
13 (Ps 60:3; 75:8) then you shall say to them: Thus says the Lord:
I will fill all the inhabitants of this land-even the kings that sit
on the throne of David, and the priests, and the prophets,
and all the inhabitants of Jerusalem-with drunkenness.
14 (Dt 29:20; Ps 2:9) I will dash them against one another,
even the fathers and the sons together, says the Lord.
I will not show pity nor spare nor have mercy,
but will destroy them.

[12] Therefore thou shalt speak unto them this word; Thus saith the LORD God
of Israel, Every bottle shall be filled with wine: and they shall say unto thee, Do we not certainly know that every bottle shall be filled with wine? [13] Then shalt thou say unto them, Thus saith the LORD, Behold, I will fill all the inhabitants of this land, even the kings that sit upon David's
throne, and the priests, and the prophets, and all the inhabitants of Jerusalem, with drunkenness.
[14] And I will dash them one against another, even the fathers and the sons together, saith the LORD: I will not pity, nor spare, nor have mercy, but destroy them.

Exile Threatened

15 (Isa 28:14-22) Hear and give heed;
do not be proud,
for the Lord has spoken.
16 (Isa 59:9; Jos 7:19; Isa 5:30) Give glory to the Lord your God,
before He causes darkness
and before your feet stumble
on the dark mountains,
and while you look for light,
He turns it into the shadow of death
and makes it gross darkness.
17 (Jer 9:1; Ps 80:1) But if you will not listen to it,
my soul will weep in secret places
for your pride;
and my eyes will weep sorely
and run down with tears,
because the flock of the Lord is carried away captive.
18 (2Ki 24:12; Jer 22:26) Say to the king and to the queen mother:
"Humble yourselves, sit down,
for your beautiful crown
shall come down from your head."
19 (Jer 52:27) The cities of the Negev will be shut up,
and no one will open them;
all Judah will be carried away into captivity;
it will be wholly carried away captive.
20 (Jer 6:22; 23:2) Lift up your eyes and see
those who come from the north.
Where is the flock that was given to you,
your beautiful flock?
21 (Isa 13:8; Jer 4:31) What will you say when He appoints over you
those you yourself had taught to be companions to you?
Shall not sorrows take hold of you,
as a woman in labor?
22 (Na 3:5; Jer 5:19) And if you say in your heart,
"Why have these things come upon me?"
for the greatness of your iniquity
your skirts have been removed
and your heels made bare.
23 (Pr 27:22; Isa 1:5) Can the Ethiopian change his skin
or the leopard his spots?
Then you also can do good,
who are accustomed to doing evil.
24 (Lev 26:33; Ps 1:4) Therefore I will scatter them as the stubble
that passes away by the wind of the wilderness.
25 (Job 20:29; Ps 11:6) This is your lot,
the portion of your measures from Me,
says the Lord,
because you have forgotten Me
and trusted in falsehood.
26 (La 1:8; Hos 2:10) Therefore I Myself have uncovered your skirts
over your face
so that your shame may appear.
27 (Eze 6:13; Hos 8:5) I have seen your adulteries and your lustful neighings, the lewdness of your harlotry,
and your abominations
on the hills in the fields.
Woe to you, O Jerusalem!
How long will you remain unclean?

[15] Hear ye, and give ear; be not proud: for the LORD hath spoken.
[16] Give glory to the LORD your God, before he cause darkness, and before
your feet stumble upon the dark mountains, and, while ye look for light, he turn it into the shadow of death, and make it gross darkness.
[17] But if ye will not hear it, my soul shall weep in secret places for
your pride; and mine eye shall weep sore, and run down with tears, because
the LORD's flock is carried away captive.
[18] Say unto the king and to the queen, Humble yourselves, sit down: for
your principalities shall come down, even the crown of your glory.
[19] The cities of the south shall be shut up, and none shall open them:
Judah shall be carried away captive all of it, it shall be wholly carried
away captive.
[20] Lift up your eyes, and behold them that come from the north: where is
the flock that was given thee, thy beautiful flock?
[21] What wilt thou say when he shall punish thee? for thou hast taught them
to be captains, and as chief over thee: shall not sorrows take thee, as a
woman in travail?
[22] And if thou say in thine heart, Wherefore come these things upon me?
For the greatness of thine iniquity are thy skirts discovered, and thy heels made bare.
[23] Can the Ethiopian change his skin, or the leopard his spots? then may
ye also do good, that are accustomed to do evil.
[24] Therefore will I scatter them as the stubble that passeth away by the
wind of the wilderness.
[25] This is thy lot, the portion of thy measures from me, saith the LORD; because thou hast forgotten me, and trusted in falsehood.
[26] Therefore will I discover thy skirts upon thy face, that thy shame may appear.
[27] I have seen thine adulteries, and thy neighings, the lewdness of thy whoredom, and thine abominations on the hills in the fields. Woe unto thee,
O Jerusalem! wilt thou not be made clean? when shall it once be?

2) Our Daily Bread for 9 August 2026 Titles Costly Faithfulness

Psalm 31:1-5,7-13

1 In You, O Lord, do I seek refuge;
may I never be ashamed;
deliver me in Your righteousness.
2 (Ps 63:1; 84:2 ) Incline Your ear to me;
deliver me speedily;
be my strong rock,
a strong fortress to save me.
3 (Ps 79:10; 80:5) For You are my rock and my fortress;
for Your name's sake lead me and guide me.
4 (Isa 30:29; Ps 62:8) Lead me out of the net that they have hidden for me,
for You are my strength.
5 (Ps 42:11; 43:5) Into Your hand I commit my spirit;
You have redeemed me, O Lord, God of truth.
7 (Ps 88:7; Jnh 2:3) I will be glad and rejoice in Your lovingkindness,
for You have seen my trouble;
You have known my soul in adversities,
8 (Job 35:10; Ps 63:6) and have not delivered me up into the hand of the enemy; You have set my feet in a broad place.
9 (Ps 38:6; 18:2) Be gracious to me, O Lord, for I am in trouble;
my eye wastes away with grief,
yes, my soul and my body.
10 (Ps 42:3; Joel 2:17) For my life is spent with grief,
and my years with sighing;
my strength fails because of my iniquity,
and my bones waste away.
11 (Ps 42:5; 43:5) I became a reproach among all my enemies,
but especially among my neighbors,
and a dread to my acquaintances;
those who saw me outside fled fromme.
12 I am forgotten as a dead man out of mind;
I am like a broken vessel.
13 For I have heard the slander of many;
fear was on every side;
while they took counsel together againstme,
they planned to take away my life.

[1] In thee, O LORD, do I put my trust; let me never be ashamed: deliver me
in thy righteousness.
[2] Bow down thine ear to me; deliver me speedily: be thou my strong rock,
for an house of defence to save me.
[3] For thou art my rock and my fortress; therefore for thy name's sake lead me, and guide me.
[4] Pull me out of the net that they have laid privily for me: for thou art
my strength.
[5] Into thine hand I commit my spirit: thou hast redeemed me, O LORD God of truth.
[7] I will be glad and rejoice in thy mercy: for thou hast considered my trouble; thou hast known my soul in adversities;
[8] And hast not shut me up into the hand of the enemy: thou hast set my
feet in a large room.
[9] Have mercy upon me, O LORD, for I am in trouble: mine eye is consumed
with grief, yea, my soul and my belly.
[10] For my life is spent with grief, and my years with sighing: my strength faileth because of mine iniquity, and my bones are consumed.
[11] I was a reproach among all mine enemies, but especially among my neighbours, and a fear to mine acquaintance: they that did see me without
fled from me.
[12] I am forgotten as a dead man out of mind: I am like a broken vessel.
[13] For I have heard the slander of many: fear was on every side: while
they took counsel together against me, they devised to take away my life.

The film A Hidden Life tells the true story of Austrian farmer Franz J|ngerst|ntter during World War II. Sickened by Nazi atrocities and believing only Jesus is Lord, Franz refused to swear allegiance to Hitler and was arrested. The rest of the film shows the anguish this brave stand brought him.

Franz's village treated him with contempt for opposing Hitler's agenda. Cellmates ridiculed his faith, and even some priests thought he was being foolish. "God doesn't care what you say, only what's in your heart," one person says in the film, tempting Franz to "hail" Hitler without meaning it to save his life. "My rock, my fortress," Franz prays, feeling pressure
to recant, "give me strength to follow You."

Psalm 31 is the prayer of a person facing evil powers. "Be my rock of refuge, a strong fortress to save me" (v. 2), David pleads in the face of his own tyrants (vv. 4, 11). His life in anguish and suffering the contempt of his neighbours, David longs to stay faithful under pressure (vv. 3, 10-13).
"Into your hands I commit my spirit," he prays (v. 5),
words later echoed by Jesus on the cross (Luke 23:46).

Our God never leaves costly faithfulness unrewarded. Franz J|ngerst|ntter stayed
faithful to the end. Like Jesus, this faithfulness cost him his life. But just as Jesus was raised from the grave, so Franz will rise one day too.

Week 8 Guided by Grace Day 1 A circle of Light

John 8:12

12 (Jn 12:35; Job 33:28; Isa 49:6) Again, Jesus spoke to them, saying,
"I am the light of the world. Whoever follows Me
shall not walk in the darkness, but shall have the light of life."

12 Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the light of the world:
he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness,
but shall have the light of life.

When Judy Garland stepped onstage, she filled the spotlight. Nothing was illuminated but her face, and as she sang, her listeners had a sense of being transported beyond themselves into the meaning of her song. The focus of reality, at that moment, was "Judy", and everything else faded into the dim recesses of the shadowed room. The spotlight brought her into sharp focus
as the center of attention, and all around her was darkness.
When the scriptures speaks of Jesus as "the light," the image is not
of thousands of blazing bulbs lighting up a football field for a night game. Rather, he is like a hand-help lamp that throws a circle of light in the immediate vicinity. such a lamp lights the path that a traveler will walk,
but lights it only one step at a time.
Jesus is the center of that circle of light. As we follow him, we share the light, but he is always at center. Jesus Christ is the focal point,
and everything else fades into dim gray by comparison.
If we are to keep our lives illuminated, to have his light falling upon the road we walk, we must stay close to him. Jesus does not hand the lamp
to us and suggest that we go the way he wants; he , the Light, leads,
and if we want to stay in the light, we follow.

Application

a) Have I ever tried to go my own way, apart from the Light?
What was the result?

b) How can this verse help me remember the importance of staying close
to Jesus?

4) From Prosperity Promises - Kenneth Copeland

Is 48:15,17

15 I, even I, have spoken, and I have called him;
I have brought him, and his way will prosper.
17 (Ps 32:8; Isa 43:14) Thus says the Lord,
your Redeemer, the Holy One of Israel:
I am the Lord your God, who teaches you to profit,
who leads you in the way you should go.

15 I, even I, have spoken; yea, I have called him:
I have brought him, and he shall make his way prosperous.
17 Thus saith the LORD, thy Redeemer, the Holy One of Israel;
I am the LORD thy God which teacheth thee to profit,
which leadeth thee by the way that thou shouldest go.

5) From a Book called God's Promises for you:

God's Protection in Times of Trouble

PSALMS 91

1 He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High
shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty.
2 (Ps 63:1; 84:2) I will say of the Lord, "He is my refuge and my fortress,
my God in whom I trust."
3 (Ps 79:10; 80:5) Surely He shall deliver you from the snare of the hunter
and from the deadly pestilence.
4 (Isa 30:29; Ps 62:8) He shall cover you with His feathers,
and under His wings you shall find protection;
His faithfulness shall be your shield and wall.
5 (Ps 42:11; 43:5) You shall not be afraid of the terror by night,
nor of the arrow that flies by day;
6 (2Sa 17:22; Dt 3:8-9) nor of the pestilence that pursues in darkness,
nor of the destruction that strikes at noonday.
7 (Ps 88:7; Jnh 2:3) A thousand may fall at your side
and ten thousand at your right hand,
but it shall not come near you.
8 (Job 35:10; Ps 63:6) Only with your eyes shall you behold
and see the reward of the wicked.
9 (Ps 38:6; 18:2) Because you have made the Lord, who is my refuge,
even the Most High, your dwelling,
10 (Ps 42:3; Joel 2:17) there shall be no evil befall you,
neither shall any plague come near your tent;
11 (Ps 42:5; 43:5) for He shall give His angels charge over you
to guard you in all your ways.
12 They shall bear you up in their hands,
lest you strike your foot against a stone.
13 You shall tread upon the lion and adder;
the young lion and the serpent you shall trample underfoot.
14 Because he has set his love upon Me, therefore I will deliver him;
I will set him on high, because he has known My name.
15 He shall call upon Me, and I will answer him;
I will be with him in trouble,
and I will deliver him and honor him.
16 With long life I will satisfy him
and show him My salvation.

Psalm 91

1 He that dwelleth in the secret place of the Most High
Shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty.
2 I will say of the LORD, He is my refuge and my fortress:
My God; in him will I trust.
3 Surely he shall deliver thee from the snare of the fowler,
And from the noisome pestilence.
4 He shall cover thee with his feathers, and under his wings shalt thou trust: His truth shall be thy shield and buckler.
5 Thou shalt not be afraid for the terror by night;
Nor for the arrow that flieth by day;
6 Nor for the pestilence that walketh in darkness;
Nor for the destruction that wasteth at noonday.
7 A thousand shall fall at thy side, and ten thousand at thy right hand;
But it shall not come nigh thee.
8 Only with thine eyes shalt thou behold
And see the reward of the wicked.
9 Because thou hast made the LORD, which is my refuge,
Even the most High, thy habitation;
10 There shall no evil befall thee,
Neither shall any plague come nigh thy dwelling.
11 For he shall give his angels charge over thee,
To keep thee in all thy ways.
12 They shall bear thee up in their hands,
Lest thou dash thy foot against a stone.
13 Thou shalt tread upon the lion and adder:
The young lion and the dragon shalt thou trample under feet.
14 Because he hath set his love upon me, therefore will I deliver him:
I will set him on high, because he hath known my name.
15 He shall call upon me, and I will answer him:
I will be with him in trouble; I will deliver him, and honour him.
16 With long life will I satisfy him,and shew him my salvation.

Remember God's promises when You pray

The Lord's prayer

9 "Therefore pray in this manner:
Our Father who is in heaven,
hallowed be Your name.
10 (Mt 3:2; 4:17) Your kingdom come;
Your will be done
on earth, as it is in heaven.

Adding further

17 (Isa 44:3; Ac 10:45) 'In the last days it shall be,' says God,
'that I will pour out My Spirit on all flesh;
your sons and your daughters shall prophesy,
your young men shall see visions,
and your old men shall dream dreams.'

[13] Now the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, that
ye may abound in hope, through the power of the Holy Ghost.
