Not "only", but is necessary for eternal life. As Jesus put it:

The Certainty Of Conscious, Eternal Torment For Those Who Reject The Gospel
Satan has a tight chain on many people. You can think more clearly if
you snap that chain.
1. The Nature of the Punishment
(1) Revelation 20:10u"and the devil who had deceived them was thrown into the lake of fire and sulfur where the beast and the false prophet were, and they will be tormented day and night forever and ever." (Revelation 20:10 ESV)
By taking all of that literally, you are stepping on the toes of
animal rights groups. That "beast" will be tortured for all eternity.
Have fun explaining to those groups why that beast is in there.
Oh yeh, by the way, "death" is also tossed in there (Rev 20:14), and
is tortured for all eternity also. That should be interesting.
The punishment of the wicked is a state of continuous torment. This torment is not annihilation or a cessation of being, but a conscious experience described as being tormented day and night. Furthermore, the duration of this torment is explicitly stated to be forever and ever.
That's bad news for the beast. And apparently "death" somehow has
feelings, in order to experience that torture from your god of sadism.
(2) Matthew 25:41, 46u"Then he will say to those on his left, 'Depart from me, you cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels.' ... And these will go away into eternal punishment, but the righteous into eternal life." (Matthew 25:41, 46 ESV)
The fire into which the ungodly are cast is described by Christ Himself as eternal.
Yes, their annilation will be forever. Yes they are having judgment
for acting wickedly, but by a God of love, rather than a satanic god
of torture.
The punishment of those who reject the gospel lasts exactly as long as the life granted to the righteous. If the life of the saved is unending, the punishment of the lost is equally unending.
And it is, but without the torture.
2. The Condition of the Lost in Gehenna and Hades
(1) Mark 9:43, 47-48u"And if your hand causes you to sin, cut it off. It is better for you to enter life crippled than with two hands to go to Gehenna, to the unquenchable fire... And if your eye causes you to sin, tear it out. It is better for you to enter the kingdom of God with one eye than with two eyes to be thrown into Gehenna, 'where their worm does not die and the fire is not quenched.'" (Mark 9:43, 47-48 ESV)
Why are those poor worms being tortured with fire for eternity. Did
they sin? The cruelty given to them by your satanic god, is great
because they CAN'T EVEN DIE. Your pathetic god made sure of that.
Christ uses the word Gehenna to describe the final place of punishment. He explicitly defines it as a place of unquenchable fire. The statement that their worm does not die demonstrates that the consciousness of the individual remains intact and suffers continuously without end or termination.
What did those worms do to get tortured? You haven't answered that
yet. You claim your god is a god of justice, but torturing innocent
worms and a dumb beast is not justice at all. They are still life
forms, and deserve to be treated fairly.
(2) Luke 16:23-24u"and in Hades, being in torment, he lifted up his eyes and saw Abraham far off and Lazarus at his side. And he called out, 'Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus to dip the end of his finger in water and cool my tongue, for I am in anguish in this flame.'" (Luke 16:23-24 ESV)
The word Hades refers to the immediate place of the dead prior to the final judgment. Scripture teaches that immediately upon death, the individual who rejects God is fully conscious, capable of feeling extreme physical anguish, retaining memory, and experiencing the reality of torment in flame.
What about all the sinners in the past before Jesus came to earth?
They never had the chance to know him. Is your satanic god going to
torture them also? I wouldn't put it past him.
But my God of love will resurrect them. Since Paul said they are not
sinless, God will not punish them at this time. Only through Jesus can
someone by saved. They will all get that chance.
3. The Degree and Finality of the Torment
(1) Revelation 14:11u"And the smoke of their torment goes up forever and ever, and they have no rest, day or night, these worshipers of the beast and its image, and whoever receives the mark of its name." (Revelation 14:11 ESV)
The text specifies that those under judgment have no rest, day or night. A state of non-existence or annihilation would mean an absence of suffering and a form of rest from pain. Scripture explicitly denies this possibility by stating the suffering is unceasing and perpetual.
The punishment for unrepentant sinners is eternal. They get no "rest"
from non-existence. They made their bed, and now have to lay in it.
(2) Revelation 20:15u"And if anyone's name was not found written in the book of life, he was thrown into the lake of fire." (Revelation 20:15 ESV)
The final destination for every individual who rejects the gospel of Jesus Christ is the lake of fire. There are no exceptions, and there is no escape once this final sentence is executed.

General Proposition: Scripture explicitly teaches in numerous plain passages that those who reject the gospel will suffer conscious, personal, unceasing torment in the lake of fire, Gehenna, forever and ever.
Specific Proposition: A God of love is running the show. He can, and
does, forgive the worst of sinners. But He is also a God of justice.
(Deut 32:4) He is our Father, and deserves the respect of all. To
accuse Him of being a torturer is degrading.
