Esther 6: The Great Reversal
A sleepless king and a proud official unintentionally cooperate to fulfill the sovereign purposes of God.
The book of Esther reveals the hidden hand of God working through ordinary events to protect his people and humble the proud. You should trust God's sovereign care.
By resting in divine timing (Esther 6:1-5)
The sleepless king commanded the records of memorable deeds to be read, revealing that Mordecai had received no honor for exposing a treasonous assassination plot against the crown.
God sovereignly directs the ordinary details of life, including a monarch's sleeplessness, to ensure that his hidden purposes of justice and protection for his people are perfectly timed.
Jesus Christ is the ultimate King who perfectly remembers every act of faithfulness and who holds the complete register of his people in the book of life.
The epistles assure believers that God is not unjust to forget their work and labor of love which they have shown toward his name.
By pursuing godly humility (Esther 6:6-9)
Haman enters the court seeking Mordecai's execution but is instead asked by the king how to honor a man, prompting Haman to describe a lavish display of royal dignity intended for himself.
Pride blinds the human heart to its own vulnerability, causing individuals to seek personal exaltation and the praise of men rather than the honor that comes from God.
Jesus exposed the sinful desire for public prestige and chief seats, modeling instead the path of the ultimate servant who humbled himself to the point of death on a cross.
Believers are instructed in the epistles to do nothing through selfish ambition or conceit, but in lowliness of mind to esteem others better than themselves.
By honoring fellow believers (Esther 6:10-11)
The king commanded Haman to immediately bestow all the described honors upon Mordecai the Jew, forcing Haman to publicly parade his hated rival through the city square.
God humbles the proud and exalts the humble, actively reversing human schemes to demonstrate his supreme authority over the machinations of wicked men.
The resurrection and ascension of Jesus Christ represent the supreme reversal, where the humiliated Savior was highly exalted by the Father and given the name above every name.
The epistles command the church to humble themselves under the mighty hand of God so that he may exalt them in due time.
By submitting to divine justice (Esther 6:12-14)
Haman hurried home mourning with his head covered, only for his wise men and his wife to declare that his fall before Mordecai signaled his certain and total destruction.
Opposition to the people of God is an opposition to God himself, which inevitably results in the absolute collapse and ruin of the wicked.
Through the cross, Jesus Christ disarmed principalities and powers, making a public spectacle of them and triumphing over them in it.
The epistles assure the church that the God of peace will crush Satan under their feet shortly.
Invitation
The surprising reversal of Esther chapter 6 points forward to the ultimate reversal achieved at Calvary, where the ultimate enemy believed he had secured a final victory over the Son of God. Instead, through His death on the cross, Jesus paid the full penalty for sin, and by His glorious resurrection, He permanently triumphed over death, hell, and the devil. This perfect salvation is now freely offered to all who turn from their own pride and self-righteousness. You are exhorted to place your complete reliance on Him for eternal life by calling on the name of the Lord.

Good News rCa
Christ's death on a cross paid the debt we owe God for our sins (Colossians 2:14). God raised Him from the dead to prove this (Romans 1:4). This means God can now remain right, while forgiving our sins (Romans 3:26) and delivering us from His coming wrath (1 Thessalonians 1:10). It's a free gift for those who believe in Christ (Romans 6:23).If you believe, call on the Lord to save you (Romans 10:9-13):
