Christ The Fulfillment Of The Law And Our Sabbath Rest

    1. Christ The Perfect Fulfillment Of The Law

    Matthew 5:17

Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I
have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them. (Matthew 5:17 ESV)

Jesus Christ did not come to destroy the Law, but to fill it to the
full. He fulfilled the Law in two ways: first, by living a life of
perfect, sinless obedience to every moral command; and second, by
becoming the perfect sacrifice that paid the penalty the Law demanded
    of us.

    Romans 10:4

For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to everyone who
    believes. (Romans 10:4 ESV)

The word end here means the goal or the culmination. Christ is the
goal toward which the Law was always pointing. When a person trusts
in Christ, they find the righteousness that the Law required but

could never produce in a sinful human heart.

    2. Fulfilling The Law Through Love And The Holy Spirit

    Romans 8:3-4

For God has done what the law, weakened by the flesh, could not do.

By sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh and for sin,
he condemned sin in the flesh, in order that the righteous

requirement of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not

according to the flesh but according to the Spirit. (Romans 8:3-4
    ESV)

The Law itself was good, but our sinful nature was too weak to obey
it. Christ did what we could not do. Now, through the Holy Spirit,
the righteous requirement of the Law is actually fulfilled in the
believer. We do not fulfill the Law by our own strength to earn

salvation, but by the Spirit's power because we are saved.

    Galatians 5:14

For the whole law is fulfilled in one word: You shall love your

neighbor as yourself. (Galatians 5:14 ESV)

Love is not a replacement for the Law; it is the power that carries
it out. When the Holy Spirit produces love in our hearts, we

naturally do what the Law requires. We do not murder or steal

because we love our neighbor. Love is the Law in action.

    3. Christ As The True Sabbath Rest Of God

    Matthew 11:28

Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you
    rest. (Matthew 11:28 ESV)

The Sabbath day was a sign and a shadow of a much greater reality.

The physical rest from labor once a week pointed to the spiritual
rest found in Jesus Christ. To come to Christ is to find the rest
for our souls that the weekly Sabbath could only picture.

    Hebrews 4:9-10

So then, there remains a Sabbath rest for the people of God, for

whoever has entered God's rest has also rested from his works as

God did from his. (Hebrews 4:9-10 ESV)

The true Sabbath rest is not found in keeping a certain day, but in
ceasing from our own works to try to please God. We rest in the

finished work of Jesus Christ. He is our Sabbath. Those who believe
in Him have entered into an eternal rest from the burden of trying
    to save themselves.

    Colossians 2:16-17

Therefore let no one pass judgment on you in questions of food and
drink, or with regard to a festival or a new moon or a Sabbath.

These are a shadow of the things to come, but the substance belongs
    to Christ. (Colossians 2:16-17 ESV)

The Bible calls the Sabbath a shadow. If you have the person who

casts the shadow, you no longer need to cling to the shadow itself.

Christ is the substance. He is the reality that the Sabbath was

    meant to teach us about.

Proposition: Jesus Christ is the fulfillment of the Law's demands
and the substance of the Sabbath's rest. Through the Holy Spirit,
He enables the believer to live out the Law's righteousness through
love, resting entirely in His completed work.

    Good News rCa

Christ's death on a cross paid the debt we owe God for our sins (Colossians 2:14). The proof is God raised Him from the dead (Romans 1:4).

This means God can now remain right, while forgiving our sins (Romans 3:26) and delivering us from His coming wrath (1 Thessalonians 1:10). It's a free gift for those who believe in Christ (Romans 6:23).

If you believe, call on the Lord to save you (Romans 10:9-13).
