Ezra 5: Building a Better Foundation

A guide to spiritual building and persistence.

God moves His people to finish the work He started through the power of His word and His constant care. You should build your life on Christ.

    By building on Christ (1-2)

The Jewish leaders begin rebuilding the house of God in Jerusalem after receiving encouragement from the prophets Haggai and Zechariah (Ezra 5:1-2).

Believers are now the living temple of God, built upon the foundation of Christ and the words of the apostles and prophets (Ephesians 2:19-22). You should focus your life on spiritual growth by relying on the finished work of Jesus rather than physical structures (1 Peter 2:5).

    By trusting God's providence (3-5)

Local governors question the legal authority of the Jews to build, but the work continues because God is watching over the elders (Ezra 5:3-5).

The New Testament teaches that no external power can stop God's purposes for His people because He works all things for their good (Romans 8:28-31). You should persist in doing God's will with confidence, knowing He protects and sustains His church through every trial (Matthew 16:18).

By testifying of God's grace (6-17)

The officials send a letter to the king describing the Jews' persistent labor and their claim that King Cyrus originally authorized the project (Ezra 5:6-17).

Christians are called to give a gentle and respectful defense of their hope, pointing others to the historical reality of GodrCOs redemptive work (1 Peter 3:15). You should openly credit God for His intervention and decree of freedom, showing the world that your identity is found in His grace (Colossians 4:5-6).

    Invitation

Just as the people of Israel needed a decree of freedom to rebuild, every person needs a release from the debt of sin that separates them from God (Romans 3:23). The gospel is the good news that Jesus Christ died for our sins and rose again to build a permanent way for us to reach the Father (1 Corinthians 15:3-4). By trusting in His sacrifice, your sins are fully paid for, and you are made a part of God's eternal family (John 1:12). If you reject this gift, you remain under the weight of your own mistakes, but if you rely on Christ, you receive eternal life and peace with God (Romans 6:23). Call on the name of the Lord today, trusting that His work on the cross is enough to save you (Romans 10:13).

    Good News rCa

Christ's death on a cross paid the debt we owe God for our sins (Colossians 2:14). The proof is God raised Him from the dead (Romans 1:4).

This means God can now remain right, while forgiving our sins (Romans 3:26) and delivering us from His coming wrath (1 Thessalonians 1:10). It's a free gift for those who believe in Christ (Romans 6:23).

If you believe, call on the Lord to save you (Romans 10:9-13).
