OK. I've seen a few people trying to access the latest TESS movies.
But quite a few just dont seem to notice the links at the bottom
that actually play the movies. That is the only point of this exercise.
On my old FIREFOX I click the link and have my head blown off with the action. (Full screen and then backup and forward and look at the "fireball" frames
and some of the other snail-trail sh*t as well -- all very worthwhile things
to do in this inst).
I also see a couple people in China having trouble with some very
old movies from 5y back.
In those days I was playing around with light curve files, also available
on STSCI servers. These are the "output" from NASA processing.
Taking all the full frame telescope images they zero in on the same pixel in each of the usually 10,000 images taken in a month for a paricular TESS "sector" and get the intensity of the few pixels around that point every 20s (portantiallly) for the whole sector. Someone else then goes away and
"folds" this over and over to try and find a repeated pattern of brightening and darkening with the right kind of shape (v shallow dip) indicating a planetary transit. Many 1000s of times a usu jupiter-sized planet turns up.
My "contribution" was to gather whole bunches of light curves over
TESS's 25x95 deg of sky and average them together. "Obviously" if these
are all stars and therefore light years away, when you average 100s of
them together there should be no pattern because objects separated by
light years could not be co-ordinated naturally. (Speed of light limit).
But you again see flashes and darkening waves that are (cough) apparently predictive of various things we see down here on Planet Dirt.
But I see when I try to view *these* movies directly my FIREFOX says
"file is corrupted" after it downloads into whatever player it is trying
to use. But they are NOT CORRUPT. Maybe I didnt build them the proper Microsoft way but they do play OK. (E.g. some odd size with old jpeg format frame in an avi wrapper at a nonstandard speed).
So those guys in China that seem to be trying, just download the movie and
play with some Unixy like "mplayer" or via "ffmpeg".
Again, prepare to have sox removed by force.
