Yeah, "The Doctor" (aka Yads) runs a hobby NNTP server from

Unfortunately, any complaints about his Usenet behaviour will

Looking back at some of the 1980's posts here, the people were alot nicer to each other. I wonder if that is because it took a great deal more effort and intelligence to be on usenet back those days?

Now, just about any level of person can access the internet and therefore we have the bad behavior that seems to be so prevalent these days.

That's what everyone's been saying about the Donkey for... decades.

Parsing what Chunk wrote, and what he means by "here" (rather than "there"), what posts from the 1980s are "here?" One had to be at a university or in the government to have been using Usenet until the very late 80s. JLA Forums was established in November of 2004 and doesn't archive messages from before that date. Of course, it may have been different for Chunk in Russia.

So Chunk, you define "here" as anything in JLA Forums? You are as inexact as the Donkey in your English.

Yes, here. This site. The site you and I are posting on.

We've already been through this once in another thread, and I already explained what I meant. You don't need another explanation; you need to stop pretending every perfectly ordinary statement contains some puzzle for you to solve.

There seems to be a recurring need to seize on some tiny word, phrasing, technicality, or supposed inconsistency and turn it into an interrogation. Eventually that stops looking like attention to detail and starts looking like argument for argument's sake.

If you have a substantive disagreement with something someone has actually said, make it. So far, most of what you've managed to demonstrate is an ability to take something trivial, manufacture an argument around it, and then insert yourself into the resulting controversy as though you've contributed something significant.

    You haven't.

Constantly creating disputes over minutiae doesn't make your contribution more relevant. If anything, the harder you work to turn nothing into something, the more obvious the effort becomes.

But inventing an ambiguity, assigning it to me, and then demanding that I defend it is not a substantive disagreement. It's just manufacturing your own argument and expecting me to participate in it.

I'll give you this one response to clear it up yet again. After this, I'm not going to keep rewarding the same manufactured confusion with more attention.

Here means this site. You were told that before. You know it now. There is nothing more to parse, reinterpret, investigate, or correct.

Find an actual point to argue about.

AI is working overtime for you today, Chunk. How about you answer posts in your own writing, instead of feeding a prompt into a site?

Here, for us and most readers, means alt.arts.poetry.comments. If you mean the whole of JLA Forums, the Internet, the earth, the solar system, or the universe, please specify that.* You are writing on THIS group, not ALL groups. If you can't do that, go back to the Cooking group and post some more stolen recipes.

This is a discussion group for *writers,* MC.

Language is all-important to us, because it is the tool with which we create our works.

When someone in a writers group misuses a word, or states something in a vague, wholly unclear manner, we correct it or ask for clarification.

NancyGene is correct in asking you what you mean by "this group." You said that Michael Jackson has posted in this group. He has *not* posted in AAPC.

He *may* have posted in JLA or on Usenet... but I highly doubt it. (As does AI when asked.)

If you wish to be understood, you should politely answer questions others have regarding your posts.

    That's just being courteous.

    Good evening, MummyChunk, well put.

Childish name-calling from the Usenet trolls, referring to The Doctor, a regular on the Dr. Who newsgroup.

Yes, these poetry newsgroups were very different in the days of yore.

Usenet was initially used predominately used by college professors and professionals in the various groups represented. When Google Groups made it accessible to the general public, they let the riff-raff in. People like you... and me.

The fusty old academic crowd treated each other civilly, as fusty old academics tend to do.

You act like a drunken redneck because you are one.

I act like demonic presence because I am one.

Dunce is a dunce with a stick up has ass.

    Pick was a delusional nut-job...

And blah blah blah, it's a totally different crowd.

HarryLime, spare me the lecture about writers, language, and clarity. That isn't what happened here, and I think you know that.

I already cleared this up twice back on September 27.

So no, this wasn't NancyGene politely asking for clarification and me refusing to answer.

    NancyGene asked and I answered.

    NancyGene kept going (as usual).

I answered again. That's pretty simple.

At some point, it stops being about "clarity" and starts being about refusing to let a trivial point go after it has already been answered.

And frankly, I don't think you need me to explain that distinction to you.

You've been around NancyGene and these discussions long enough to know exactly how this works. More to the point, you've taken part in enough of these same endless arguments yourself that the sudden role of neutral referee lecturing me about "courtesy" is a little hard to take seriously.

You've seen minor points get picked apart for page after page. You've participated in threads where the original subject gets buried under nitpicking, sarcasm, and the apparently irresistible need to get in one more jab or correction. So let's not suddenly pretend that what's happening here is some solemn defense of the English language.

NancyGene has a habit of grabbing onto some tiny word, technicality, or supposed mistake and worrying it to death until a simple comment somehow becomes an entire argument.

And you're hardly an innocent bystander to that culture.

So when you tell me that I should "politely answer questions," that's rather rich.

    I DID answer - twice.

How many times am I required to answer the same question before I'm allowed to conclude that the problem isn't a lack of clarification?

    Three times? Five? Ten?

If something I write is genuinely unclear, ask me and I'll clarify it. That's reasonable.

What I'm not going to do is keep explaining the same thing because somebody wants to keep poking at it after the answer has already been given.

And if we're going to talk about courtesy, then maybe apply that standard in both directions.

Courtesy isn't a rule where NancyGene gets unlimited opportunities to dissect somebody else's wording while I'm expected to keep smiling and answering until they're finally satisfied.

And it certainly isn't a rule where you step in afterward, ignore the fact that I already answered twice, and lecture me as though I was the one refusing to communicate.

    Come on, you know better.

    So yes, language matters.

And because language matters, let's call things what they actually are.

Asking once because you don't understand something is asking for clarification.

Continuing after you've already been given the answer is something else entirely.

If two answers aren't enough, clarity was never the problem. The need for an argument and attention was.

NancyGene has a habit of grabbing onto some tiny word, technicality, or supposed mistake and worrying it to death until a simple comment somehow becomes an entire argument.

And you're hardly an innocent bystander to that culture.

You're right, about me. I'm a writer. Writing is about communication. As I keep telling the Donkey, words matter.

That's not just an empty quip.

We can only effectively communicate with one another if we express ourselves clearly.

So when you tell me that I should "politely answer questions," that's rather rich.

    I DID answer - twice.

How many times am I required to answer the same question before I'm allowed to conclude that the problem isn't a lack of clarification?

    Three times? Five? Ten?

However many times it takes until the rest of us understand what you mean.

You made a claim that various celebrities posted here. Since no one can locate these posts, it falls on you to back up your claim.

Your answer didn't... answer... her question.

She doesn't know what you meant. I don't know what you meant.

"This" group is unspecific because "this group" could be AAPC or JLA or Usenet.

To answer her question, you only needed to specify where the posts by Michael Jackson, Larry Flynt, et. al., appeared.

If they posted here, please provide links. If you were mistaken about their having posted here, please be so good as to admit it.

There's really nothing to quarrel about... just a lot of confusion over your claims. You can end the confusion by providing links to the posts in question.

If you don't remember, just say so.

It's been my experience with Usenet that honest always works best.

There are several groups here that have posts from the 1980s

    www.jlaforums.com/viewforum.php?f=595

    www.jlaforums.com/viewforum.php?f=596

    www.jlaforums.com/viewforum.php?f=566

Forgot this one when I pasted

    www.jlaforums.com/viewforum.php?f=568

HarryLime, spare me the lecture about writers, language, and clarity. That isn't what happened here, and I think you know that.

I already cleared this up twice back on September 27.

    MummyChunk wrote:

Yes, I had a typo in his name.

Who ever said anything about Usenet?

    NancyGene then asked:

    NancyGene wrote:

And what, Chunk, do you mean by "this site?" On a computer, on Earth, alive? They weren't on alt.arts.poetry.comments. They weren't on JLA Forums.

    And I answered:

    MummyChunk wrote:

    This site.

I never said anything about AAPC either. :?:

Are you having a slow day today NancyGene?

    http://www.jlaforums.com/viewtopic.php?p=711546103#711546103

NancyGene kept at it, so I answered again:

    MummyChunk wrote:

    http://www.jlaforums.com/viewtopic.php?p=711546930#711546930

Dance is a dunce with a stick up has ass.

    Pick was a delusional nut-job...

And blah blah blah, it's a totally different crowd.

Google Groups definitely opened the door to Usenet for many of us.

Can someone please tell me who is Binky and why does he keep coming up

Here's a good example of what I referred to in the other thread, MummyChunk.

    Just mean people!

    :(

"This is Usenet, trolls come with the territory.,"

There are several groups here that have posts from the 1980s

    www.jlaforums.com/viewforum.php?f=595

    www.jlaforums.com/viewforum.php?f=596

    www.jlaforums.com/viewforum.php?f=566

are just a few. There are several others.

Usenet posts going all the way back to 1985 and 1986.

    Very interesting.

I *think* the earliest Usenet poetry newsgroup was called net.poetry or net.poems.

I actually found it years ago archived on Google Groups so traces if it could/should still be out there.

Well Benders makes at least two that we know of, just from this newsgroup.

"I've known for over a year that this guy is the assassin of the Usenet
poetry community. When I first arrived, I thought he was keeping the
lights on in a dead group by reposting from archives. I soon realized
that he was just endlessly reposting his own stuff, that he had killed
the group by flooding it, and that most of the people he called
"trolls" were actually the members of the group.
I've joined the crowd. I'm done trying to work with him and speak reason
to him. It's exhausting and pointless." - lazy loser Willie Douchebag gets another ass kicking from The One True Melissa

I'm pretty sure that Will believes he is updating the web page on
the JLA Forums site. That's why he thinks he can bump threads,
thinks there's a top to be on, thinks that text is "removed" or
"restored," etc. He doesn't know what Usenet is or how it works,
so he acts like he's using a web forum because that's what he
    personally sees.

I tried to explain that he's actually sending flurries of
separate messages, but he either didn't understand or didn't
care. I'm sure others have tried before me. I'm happy to explain
again, but there's no point if he doesn't listen
Will, everyone's telling you the truth. You're not restoring
squat. The troll's message doesn't change the original message,
and yours doesn't change the troll's message. Nothing has
changed. You're just flooding, piling on more and more messages
of nonsense nobody wants to read.

    - Clueless Dockery gets another Usenet lesson from The One True Melissa.

You keep claiming that, but the fact that they both wanted
you dead makes one really doubt that's true.

With "friends" like that who need enemies?

    You keep claiming that

    Because it's true.

I've been friends with Paul D Wilson since 1977

    Friends with M. H. Benders since 2004.
