I enjoyed reading this after it is my take on the blog post:
https://geohot.github.io/blog/jekyll/update/2026/05/03/punk-or-why-i-dont-stream.html
my take:
Was able to read now, very good I agree 90% with most of it, but the part that there
is no scape, is not true, people are in usenet more than ever in the last 10 years and
no we do not need masses there, also we have mesh networking like reticulum that are
getting much attention from the "alternative" folks around the world, new protocols
like gemini, then we have, gopher, i2p, the fediverse etc... they may not have the
millions and millions of people(or sheep?)
I agree, it's easy to see the alternative nets and services with their relatively low
levels of traffic, and even foresee that if usenet hits certain thresholds of "success"
it'll once again become victim to that success.
But we were used to being isolated, the net was once small, and I think that in a lot
of ways and places, the alternatives are as active as they once were during periods
that are looked back on fondly these days. The more we use this stuff the more we'll
build the second great "global digital community" gatekept by the general toilet
internet and the various technical barriers to participation.
Sometimes we'll have some success, other times maybe things will fizzle out or become
havens for the kind of people we generally don't like. We can keep using our youtubes
and blueskys if we want to, they're fine for interacting with normies, not great
but we can still build our own little world, just as we had through the early commercialization of the internet. We just have to use it and our collective quirks,
tastes, and habits will continually bring us together. I've noted across several
online personas and gathering places: I actually probably know many of you, maybe in
one life on one forum we were friends, on another we were enemies, but because of our
shared interests we came together whether we knew it or not.
I also see a lot of younger people taking interest in retro tech or hacking, we should
show them the way, get them into these spaces, they're interested. Either we do or
they'll get sucked into the currently depressing and violently right-wing ecosystem.
It's nice to be here even if I only visit a few times a month. Hope to see you all
wherever we end up.
