the poster of this YT video, in 2012, claims:
"to my knowledge, I have included every character who fought the
Daleks (10 actors who played Doctor Who + 30 Doctor Who companions)"
CP tells us:
The Daleks are a fictional extraterrestrial race from the British
sci-fi TV series Doctor Who. Created by writer Terry Nation and first
appearing in 1963, the Daleks are depicted as mutated creatures
encased in tank-like robotic shells. They are known for their extreme xenophobia, hatred of all non-Dalek life forms, and their iconic
battle cry, "Exterminate!" (allegedly an idea inspired by 1930s Nazis)

To travel through time and space the Doctor uses the iconic time
machine and spacecraft TARDIS (Time And Relative Dimension In Space)
The TARDIS is famously disguised as a 1960s British police box.
Despite its small exterior, the TARDIS is much larger on the inside,
containing numerous rooms and corridors. The console room is where
the Doctor pilots the TARDIS.
The TARDIS has the ability to repair and regenerate itself, much like
the Doctor. It can also create new rooms and change its interior
layout as needed.

just watch this US video for a minute or so (unless you're a fan)
As for American awareness, Doctor Who has a significant fan base in
the United States, and many American fans are familiar with the
Daleks. The show's popularity has grown over the years, especially
with the revival of the series in 2005.
Doctor Who companions are characters that travel with the Doctor, an
enigmatic Time Lord from the planet Gallifrey, and they assist in
various adventures across time and space.
