I currently use (paid - latest) forte - agent as a my news reader.
Sadly it cannot handle large files. It states "out of memory". My
current PC is the x 7- 9700 ryzen with 32 GB ddr 5 RAM. So hardware is
not a problem. Even with multiple programs open, task manager states
8.1 Gig RAM used.
Internet is 1 Gig symmetric, but whenever I try to download large
number of files I get the above error.
So what can be recommended to solve this problem?

I am having multiple issues running Agent 8 current build on my Intel
based HP Envy laptop with:
2TB hard drive
16Gb of memory
Windows 10 professional
Intel Core i7 processor &th gen
1) Megajoining very large files fails resulting in multiple downloads
that never finish.
2) Downloading newsgroup headers in groups with a large number of
messages causes the error: Out of memory: Close other programs and try
the operation again. Since Forte doesn't allow incremental header
updates starting from oldest to newest messages, sampling messages
doesn't work. Before one crash the kill filter found 85,000,000
messages from the jerks spamming the groups with PRIVATE in the
subject.
There is plenty of virtual memory available but agent doesn't seem to
use it. 16GB of working memory is also ample. Agent is the only
program running when either of these problems occur.
I have tried to get help from Forte but they never reply. How did they
bumble memory management so badly? The concepts they introduced in
Agent 8 are interesting but were not fully developed. I turned off >megajoining but it is more difficult to retrieve attachment segments
and par files than in previous versions of Agent. Is Forete still in
business or have they abandoned development and support for Agent?

"large files" . . . what files, how large?
"out of memory" . . . what tells you that?
might also try . . .

There will be different answers depending on which of these the
problem is with:
1. A large file, e.g. you are downloading a single file attachment
which is over 2GB or 4GB in size.
2. A large number of different files (not headers), e.g. you are
trying to download thousands of different file attachments all
at the same time.
3. A large number of headers.
An out of memory error usually means a large number of headers,
not files, as Frank Slootweg replied in the Windows 11 newsgroup.
If you want to stick with Agent, below are some things you can do
for each of these cases.
The other alternative would be to look for a 64-bit newsreader which
meets your needs. That is going to depend on what your needs are;
for example Thunderbird is 64-bit but it is not well suited for
multipart binaries.
Some things you can do, depending on the case:
3. A large number of headers
According to FortΘ [1], "Because of various performance and RAM
limitations, we recommend that you keep the number of messages
in a folder below 1 million."
a) For downloading *new* headers, adjust this setting to
restrict the number to the most recent 1 million.
Folder >> Default Properties >> Receiving messages
[x] Limit number of headers retrieved per session to [_######_]
b) If you already have over half a million headers in a folder, delete
most of them before downloading more headers.
# Files (not headers) in general
2. A large number of different files (not headers)
1. A large file
Make sure Agent is configured to save attachments to your
hard drive and not into Agent's database, no matter what
happens - as per the settings in [2].
2. A large number of different files (not headers)
Limit the number of file attachments you download at the same time.
