What is Novichok? Novichok (Russian for "newcomer") refers to a group of advanced organophosphorus nerve agents developed by the Soviet Union between the 1970s and 1990s. These agents were designed to be more potent, harder to detect, and more resistant to standard antidotes than earlier nerve agents like VX or Sarin. They were part of a secret program known as "Foliant."

Why is it considered so dangerous? Novichok agents are exceptionally hazardous for several reasons. First, they have extreme potency - some variants are estimated to be 5 to 8 times more toxic than VX, one of the most lethal nerve agents previously known. A tiny amount can be fatal. Second, many Novichok agents use binary design, meaning they are stored as two less toxic precursor chemicals that mix to form the deadly agent only upon deployment. This makes them easier and safer to transport and store. Third, they have resistance to detection - they were specifically engineered to evade detection by standard NATO chemical warfare detectors, making them difficult to identify until it is too late. Fourth, there is persistence - some variants are designed to remain active in the environment for long periods, posing a lingering threat. Fifth, they show antidote resistance - they were developed to bypass the effects of standard atropine and oxime treatments used for other nerve agents, complicating medical response. Finally, there are long-term health effects - survivors of exposure often suffer from severe, permanent neurological damage, respiratory issues, and other chronic health problems.

Notable Incidents: The most famous use of a Novichok agent occurred in 2018 in Salisbury, UK, where former Russian intelligence officer Sergei Skripal and his daughter were poisoned. Another high-profile case involved the poisoning of Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny in 2020. Both incidents led to widespread international condemnation and sanctions against Russia.

Because of their extreme lethality and potential for mass casualties, Novichok agents are strictly prohibited under the Chemical Weapons Convention (CWC), which Russia is a signatory to. Their development, production, and stockpiling are considered violations of international law.

    Cheers!
