• Radiologically Enhanced Nuclear Weapons

The other day I came across a type of weapon technology that has all the destructive power of a standard nuclear weapon, however instead of having a high blast power it had a high radiation emission capability to it. The idea is to have all the power of a nuclear weapon but the energy released being in a form of released radiation rather than a release of blast burst. With the use of this type of weapon a bad actor could detonate a nuclear weapon and release most of the force of that weapon into gamma radiation with a short half-life. So the area bombed would be extremely extremely radioactive and because it has such a short half life to that radiation the bad actory could just set off the bomb, wait a year or less and the half-life of the radioactive material would be low enough to live in that area again. This would keep the area with buildings still intact but kill all life with ionizing radiation. This would be the ultimate in tactical weapons. The population would be toast, the assets of the area in terms of structures would still be there, and due to the quick half-life the radiation would be quickly degrading, thus allowing repopulation in a short time.

One name of this weapon is the "Neutron Bomb" or simply "Enhanced Radiation Nuclear Weapon." What countries have developed in their arsenals is quite frightening and disturbing. The theory behind this type of weapon is valid, though its use is very worrisome.

    First weaponized circa 1963.

... I'm not a complete idiot... Several parts are missing!

At the tail end of the cold war the Neutron Bomb became well-known. The
idea of being able to kill the people while maintaining the
infrastructure seemed evil and made nuclear war "palatable" to the war
hawks. After all, what's the point of winning a nuclear war if you
    can't occupy the defeated country?
