For $40,000, he undertook to fill the Hemet reservoir - rains brought 11 inches of precipitation, raising the water level by 22 feet. In 1906, rivers dried up in the Klondike, and prospectors could not wash gold. They collected $10,000 in gold for Hatfield, and within 36 hours of his work, 4 inches of rain fell. In 1922, the Italian government called on him for help during a drought - torrential rains saved the fields, and Hatfield became a national hero. He hauled his tanks from Alaska to Argentina. In the Mojave Desert, where drought is eternal, he caused 40 inches of precipitation in three hours - something never seen before or since.
