• Self Hosted Servers vs. Cloud Servers

Here at PHATstar we have an SFTP/HTTPS file server that we can manage all of our files with. It was recently upgraded to the latest CrushFTP v9 (soon to be v10 with the same license), and we have found from a security perspective that our privacy is better served with an in-house solution. That solution that we have found is CrushFTP. The software is state of the art and it has a special feature called WebDAV which allows mounting of the server on to your local file system. So in Windows you could map the network share to
something like Z:\ , the Z drive. Though it could be any aribitrary unused drive on your computer. On GNU/Linux you could mount it as /media.storage .

Aside from awesome mounting features its got a very easy setup of SSL/TLS certificates so you could have a secure domain verification or something like that in about fifteen minutes. For Society business it seems essential to
have our comms secure, if for no other reason than exercising our rightt to privacy.

Consider dedicated servers for the moment... a few years back PHATstar ran a server on a dedicated server... we installed RealVNC on a Ubuntu Linux
instance and found that someone was inserting a USB stick onto the server
box, which the GUI registered as a media being mounted, noting it to the messaging system of Ubuntu Linux. So relying on a dedicated server to store your valuables is not recommended. Doing things in house means that you have control of what's going on in your network space. One benefit of hosting with a vServer or Dedicated Server is the speed. Our vServers that we use have 400 Mbit connections to the Internet. Dedicated servers often have 1 Gbit connections. So the speed is nice, but when it makes you forgo keeping your private matters private it isn't the best option.
