PHATstar has recently (this past week) put an Internet radio station onilne on a high-end vServer. Its content? The Hackers On Planet Earth (HOPE) Conference audio... indeed all main talks from every HOPE Conference ever recorded. You can tune in to it using the VLC Media Player:

    https://www.videolan.org/vlc/

Once installed select "internet stream" and enter the following:

    https://hope.phatstar.org/hope.mp3

That will play a stream of exactly 1,095 HOPE lectures. If you are bored and need an outlet to encourage your elite hackerness, and you just need somehing to encourage your late night caffeine induced hacking sessions then this may be just what you;re looking for.

    Cheers!

That's cool that you made an internet radio station!

I have considered creating one for the purpose of playing music by conservative musicians (and for flipping the bird to liberal prick musicians.)

How does it work? How could I broadcast it? This is seriously on my long-term to-do list. Obviously there are probably legal issues with me wanting to play
other people's music, and I'll cross that path later, but for now, do you have any advice for someone wanting to start learning about this? (I could just google it but I want fuzzy's best advice on this topic first!)

    Hi Mr. S.,

Okay, the setup is rather simple. Here is what you'll need: AzuraCast, FileZilla, a Web browser, MP3 music/audio files, and a high bandwidth Internet connection. My setup is the following:

A vServer from ionos.ca (ionos.com also works for those outside of Canada). This provides 400 Mbit up and 400 Mbit down with no limits. That is probably the most important kit that you'll want for your radio station. Ionos has a package called their VPS Linux L setup. It has 4 vCores, 8 G RAM, 240 G SSD, and 400 Mbit synchronous. They've got a 6 month discount on that server when you purchase it. It will cost you $15/month for six months and will go up to $20/month after the six month period has expired.

Now as for the software, the BEST hosting platform for Internet Audio Streams is without a doubt AzuraCast, because it is Libre (open source freedomware) that you won't need to spend money on. If you really like the software then you are encouraged to send some money to its developer, but this is by no means required.

To be honest a good friend of mine setup my AzuraCast instance and he did a fantastic job at it. He was able to setup LetsEncrypt with all the bells and whistles that I needed to get these stream stations go online.

    Good luck!
