    The Leadership Challenge

Early on in my post-high-school days I went to a community college for something totally unrelated and enrolled in a course on Leadership. This was one of my top three classes that I have ever had. It gave me the tools to be an effective leader. The book that was used in that course is called "The Leadership Challenge." We delved into the art and science of leadership. This course helped me to understand that just about anyone can be a proficient leader. The book gave steps that can actually be applied in real-life situations. A methodology is presented that can make becoming a leader a possible thing. Not only that but it gave traits of an exemplary process of leadership.

If you sign up with Audible.com or Audible.ca your first book is free, paid by Audible itself to try to hook you into audio books. I would suggest that one of the options for that free book be spent on either this book or The Holy Bible. The extra-fun part of Audible is that one credit buys one book, whether that book be 2 hours long or 70 hours long. This book that I'm giving the good word on is over ten hours long if I recall correctly. Each credit from Audible costs $15/credit. So buying the audio book is actually cheaper than buying the paperback or hardcover editions of the book. You get to keep the book that you choose for free forever as there is no limit of how long it is available in your personal online library.

The book is written by (c)2012 by James M. Kouzes and Barry Z. Posner (P)2012 Gildan Media LLC. and I highly suggest you add this to your library. This book is secular (non-faith oriented), however they made a very good choice of making a companion book called "Christian Reflections on The Leadership Challenge" available. (c)2004 John Wiley & Sons (P)2012 Audible, Inc.

The other two books I recommend in my top three are: Dale Carnegie's "How to Win Friends And Influence People," though a better version of that may be the new "How to Win Friends and Influence People in The Digital Age," and "Mere Christianity" by C.S. Lewis.

If you're a "newbie," or seasoned practitioner of leading people to do great things I would put my vote with The Leadership Challenge and its complementary book for Christians. The book has stuff in it that is entirely readable, makes common sense, and gives pointers and nuggets of gold to those professional people who want to advance themselves and their careers. I come from a background of The Toastmasters, a public speaking club that teaches and gives the tools to be able to present speeches at the most professional levels. It has been a few years since I have attended, but after writing this article, getting that social event happening in my life looks like I'm going to sign back up.

I hope that this information finds you well. Put it to use and you will likely have a better quality of life and effectiveness in your leadership abilities.

    Cheers!
