• Getting a Bonus Pay For 2nd Language

From warmfuzzy@700:100/37 to All on Fri Feb 27 03:39:12 2026
Word is that in American Intelligence you can make a significant bonus for knowing how to communicate in a second or third language. It kind of makes sense really. Intelligence of the Foreign Intelligence type is dependent on being able to understand the language of the opposition, so this type of knowledge is very important. Not only in field work but in analysis as well.

    Cheers!

I did some work at the Presidio of Monterey, the military base now home
to the military foreign language institute. It was very interesting
seeing the immersive language training people from all branches of the
military received. I don't recall if I'm still on NDA or not, so I'll
    leave it at that.

Also applies to State Department (the political face of the IC, I suppose) and certain other government roles.

There are limits, as I think your bonus depends on the usefulness.

And some languages historically are reduced bonus (French was one that was a 50%)

How significant the bonuses tends to be related to utility.

Same sort of thing occurs overseas. Your overseas counterparts want to hold meetings in English (aka American) because they get tested and get bonused on that ability.

It also happens in Educational and Commercial worlds. I know a multi-lingual engineer that is very well taken care of for their ability to do it nearly a half dozen languages.

    One of the homes.

Some neat immersion opportunities, often in cooperation with other parts of the Government or Educational Institutions.

Like you, I don't remember what was protected or not, and it has been such a long time that certainly things have changed.

I had been scheduled for a stint at Presidio, but a host country tutoring program was substituted as they needed feet on the ground right then and there.
