In all high level jobs there is a need for leadership. We are what we make of ourselves, and making you be the person who you want to be requires forming through leadership experiences, both in class, in practicum, and in the real world.

One of my favorite books ever is The Leadership Challenge with Kozus and Posner (if I recall their names correctly). The course in leadership that trained me in leadership in college was some of the most rewarding and future shaping events of my life. It is entirely useful and the art and science of leading people to do great things is an asset that is very useful in your toolbox.

The Leadership Challenge is available in dead tree format, an eBook, or an audio book. I personally have both the paperback and Audible book. My recommendation is to pick up an audio book version of the material from Audible.com/.ca or wherever the closest Audible outfit is to your location. If you have stumbled across this Sp00knet Echomail System and have decided that you want a job in the Intelligence Community then being a leader in practice will train you well for whatever job that you get a posting at. There is no down-side of being proficient in leadership, however without it you will only be a manager. From being a manager to being a leader is a great chasm; they are not the same and are often at odds with one another.

A great book on leadership that I have found follows:

"How to Win Friends and Influence People" by Dale Carnegie

hrm... actually that is my best recommendation right there. Again, it is available for a single credit off of Audible.com which is the way I'd recommend that you consume the book. A single credit costs between $12 and $14 depending on what kind of subscription you have. But seriously, an audio book being cheaper than the hardcopy, it's a no-brainer, it's the way to go!!

    Cheers!

This is probably one of the most important truths I have learned over the last 16 months. I have been running companies for the past 22 years and up until very recently it has been 20% leadership and 80% management. As you can imaigine, this has led me to run companies that were unimaginagitive and stagnated in mediocrity. They earned money sure but they all plateaud or crashed and burn and my latest pivot was one intended to break that cycle, only it made me realize that I hadn't actually developed any leadership abilities in my career. What a f'ing wake up call this was, so now I begin the slow climb out of the hole I've dug for myself to learn this lesson

Agree, I read this 5-6 years ago and need to go back to it 2 or 20 more times.

Great post btw, I'd love to hear more about what you do and how you employ and prioritize leadership in your day to day.

My bad, I realized i didn't offer any books recommendations back in return

A CEO Does 3 things - Trey Taylor

I did some looking around and was surprised there wasn't a single echo
anywhere on any of the nets about personal development or leadership. Was going to suggest a net better suited than Spooknet to expand this
conversation with you but funny enough this is the best place for it.

I help administer The PHATstar Society. PHATstar is a computer tech society that helps those needy for computer kit and skills. We make people's lives better by giving out free hardware and software to people who can use that kind of kit. We specialize in textmode computing, such as the BBS Scene. It is basically a charity without charitable status. As its a society and not a charity we can do what we want to do without being forced to be politically correct, but rather can help out society as we see fit. It is a loosely knit organization of computer professionals and tech savvy folks. The name breaks down to "Progressive Hackers And Technologists." Its site is at www.phatstar.net. About half of what we do is secret while the other half is public. We do what we do for the glory of God and not for our own personal warmfuzzies. I would tell you what we are up to except that in the Christian faith the Holy Bible states that if we do our works in front of men then we have already received our reward by getting acknowledgment by man rather than God. We are seeking acknowledgment by God and not Man so we don't discuss our activities outside of the Society. We don't want to loose our reward so our stuff is kept from the public eye. In general simple terms we hook people up with stuff that can improve their lives. One major project that we are currently working on is the Textmode Magazine, "Echomail Networks" book, which can be found at www.textmodemag.com. PHATstar is the Society that is behind the Sp00knet Echomail Network that you're on right now, reading this message. Our website is located at www.phatstar.net.

Leadership comes into play in getting our servers fresh and in proper working order in a way that's artistic and appreciated. I try to organize things that people want to be a part of and letting them join up on those projects that interest them. This includes organizing different projects and including people in what they are interested in, not just signing people up for every project. We do what we want to do and we have fun doing it. I've tried using ntask.com's organizational software to coordinate our projects in a managerial effort, but it never really got off the ground. We will instead be organizing our activities on GUILD BBS, which will be our Society's own WHQ BBS. This system will be our command and control BBS Server. This will be inclusive in getting our Society coordinated by our own members and not just me typing out things that need doing. When you let people contribute to the overall functioning in a horizontal fashion rather than a vertical top-down structure people feel included and that they are being heard and contribute their own ideas. This seems to work well. A managerial setup is like a traditional business, a leadership setup is like an organic body where each member contributes what they excel in, and where they aren't forced to work on projects that they just aren't feeling up to doing.

To me, leadership is doing what you want to do in an organized fashion, and management is working as a general laborer on general projects. One is your love in doing things, the other is your obligation in doing things.

Have fun in your leadership adventures: they make life exciting and worth the experience of participating in. w00t!

    Cheers!

What an opprotune time for these book recommendations to come up! Leadership is kinda natural for me - I see a goal, I plan the path to accomplish that goal, then I implement the plan. My problem is getting others on board with it - sometimes it is easy, other times not so much. Having a good rapport is very important as well. If you can get a team of people to adopt your goals, the goal can be accomplished easier and all can win!

Anyways, Got some reading to do! I will be starting and expanding my farm in 2024, so I have plenty of time to read up!

Speaking of audio versions, libro.fm is a fine business model.

You have the ability to play on any device, or use any player,
keep your files, pause the membership, retain your credits, and
support your local community and/or the bookstore of your
    choice. :D
