FEMA Warning: 10 Years Without Electricity After Major Solar Storm (A Perfect Solar Storm Similar to One That Slammed Into Earth In 1859 Would Knock Out The United States Electric Grid.)

A perfect solar storm similar to one that slammed into Earth in 1859 would knock out the United States electric grid for four to 10 years if it hit today, an unpublished report from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) indicates.

The 36-page report was posted this month at GovernmentAttic.org, which uncovers old government documents that often are acquired via Freedom of Information Act requests. The 2010 document was titled, "Mitigation strategies for FEMA command, control, and communications during and after a solar
    superstorm."

So the governments knew this for at least a decade, and didn't want us to worry or prepare?

Of course they knew. To be fair, a lot of the prepper community has been banging the EMP/CME drum for decades.

It all goes back to a black start. Even if there was nothing else wrong, if you turned off the grid it would take a long time to turn it back on. Now add any computer controls that were knocked out (either due to the EMP itself, or a surge as the systems went down or went unbalanced), transformers, and so on. How do you manufacture replacements? We don't have the early industrial-revolution capacity to build parts by hand. We'd be clawing our way back from the 1800s.

In the mean time, the brains with the talent to get us back online have to worry about food, freezing, raiders, the concurrent breakdown of the modern medical and pharmaceutical establishments, and so on. It's a cascading failure that would take a lot of time to recover from.

Granted, EMP does tend to be an overblown threat, but that's not to say that it's nonexistent.

Blackstart issues are one of many.

I did a multiday tabletop exercise on this during the virus lockdown, and there are a lot of recovery problems being identified and discussed.
