    Military Global Positioning Service
    ----------

You might think that GPS is just some thing that provides civilians with a method of finding out their travel routes while traveling out and about... However, GPS has two modes: once civilian and one military. The civilian system can be turned off in a time or war, while the MilGPS remains on during major wars. Military GPS is different than standard GPS in that it has counter-jamming capacity, it is much more accurate than civilian GPS. We're talking about a positioning system up to around two feet in precision, so American weaponry can shoot a missile right inside a terrorist's window. The Russians have seen the potential problems with this situation so they have made their own positioning system called Glonas, which differs from GPS as it uses ground based stations with minimal (if any) satellites in play. In this way, the Russians can use standard triangulation, but is much more simple than the American method. Both methods work, however the Russian method is inexpensive while the American system is expensive, however in a time of war the American system would be much more resilient to jamming. The American signals would get through while Glonas would be a bit more complicated to do the same. The Russian system is indeed simpler, however the American system is more hardened against jamming, using obscure radio frequency transmission modes.

An aside, several years back some computer scientists were able to crack the MilGPS system to get the resolution that MilGPS has but use it by civilians. Now they couldn't break the system, but they could use its capacities by civilians, which could mean that in a time of war some elite civilians would still have their access to GPS technology though the standard system would be down.

I hope this info finds you well. It's intriguing if nothing else. :) :)

    Cheers!
