Hello! I'm going to be running a tabletop RPG for a group of friends, one which is set in an alternate history version of 1995. One of my players has made a character that is a conspiracy theorist/computer programmer type (think an X-Files Lone Gunmen type), and I've decided that one of the things I really want to do is set up a sort of shadowy BBS that he can get access to sometimes to communicate with certain entities, get information, or trade info & items of note. But I wanted to go a bit beyond just this concept in the game.
I had thought it would be really cool to set up a computer (I'm probably going to try to set up a more modern computer and set it up to look retro with like an older keyboard & CRT, then run software of some kind for the rest?) and then run my own BBS that I could add things to, modify, and customize the look of.
However, I am not a programmer myself-though I worked in IT for a number of years in the past-and I'm a bit young (40) to have used BBS's myself, so I have no experience with them.
Could anybody make suggestions or give advice on what software or setups might be accessible for me to learn & use? I have a computer in my home that could (assumedly) run server software. submitted by /u/Darius099 [link] [comments]
