Is it custom on a BBS to get asked your real name?

Hi all, wanted to check out the world of BBS. My parents didn't have a modem when I was younger so I missed out that part of the internet. With the current internet being what it is, I long for the simpler internet of yore and the joy of being more close to the computer again. Switched one of my laptops to Linux and installed a bunch of retro games to get into the mood (OpenXcom, Jagged Alliance 2 Straciatella, Master of Orion 2 1.50, love that those old games have community patches). Now I was trying out SyncTerm, and had found Al's Geek Lab bss, the first I wanted to test out. When registering however it asked me my REAL name. I was put off by that and disconnected. Part of my nostalgia of the old internet is that you could just easily logon somewhere, no data collecting or verifying age or clicking cookie banners. My question: is it normal that BBS'es ask your REAL name? Do they all do that? submitted by /u/mr_dfuse2 [link] [comments]
