• Strange new problem

From Rug Rat@80:774/40 to All on Wed Jan 28 22:23:19 2026
So I have a weird problem that just popped up...

The board will be humming along fine, then start having a strange issue.

The first noticable problem will be the NEW SCAN AT LOGON will report new POSTS/RESPONDED, but when listed will not show the subboards with new messages.

The second thing that is noticeable is that you are unable to run CNetC executables. You will get an "unable to execute program" error.

The third issue is that ports will no longer be able to hang up and TelnetD will report a device error in the WorkBecnch.

I know SnoopDOS will report file operation issues, but is there anyway to log application errors/crashes?

    PROBLEM SOLVED!!

Thanks David Vandermeer for quickly steering me in the right direction!

It turned out that I got infected with the HAPPY NEW YEAR Virus! I think this is the first time I have ever found a virus on an AMIGA! (THAT I KNOW OF!)....

Per his instructions I downloaded VIRUSZ from Aminet and it's myriad of required libraries and it was immediately found and removed!

I have uploaded the VIRUSZ package to The Rats Den and placed it in the Amiga / Utilities section.

This will be another MUST HAVE utility for running C-Net BBS.

    Needed packages are

    Virus Z (Application)
    Reqtools.Library
    XFDMaster.Library
    XVS
    XADMASTER
    Disassembler

I should put together just the needed files from this package and place it in one .lha for your easy isntallation.

Thanks a bunch C-Net Amiga community!

    Okay...

Looks like I still have a problem, and really looks like a memeory leak!

System was unstable with the the problems mentioned above, with 4MB out of 24MB fast RAM available....

VirusX was loaded and had not reported anything. Nothing on reboot and file scan....

The only thing that runs over and over throughout the day is TOSS...

So, really wondering if the last AREAFIX broke something, because that is when this all started happening. Will need to do a deepdive into the FTN crap when I can get my head above water with other projects going on.

The only other thing I was playing with when this issue popped up was the SMTPd settings.

I have removed the configuration changes that were made and will see if that solved my issue. There is DEFINATLY a memory leak somewhere. At boot and fresh C-Net load I have 20MB mem free. 8 hours later I have 10MB free.

So either I have some strange C-Net issue going on, or it is a problem with AmigaDOS or Amiberry.

    Okay.

So I disabled all of the SMTPd features, and I have not lost one byte!

I will let this run for a bit and see what happens, but so far so good!

When I get over this latest potential hurdle in my life and can dedicate some time to testing my lastest therory I will do so, since I know there is at least one person who is interested in running SMTP mail through their BBS. I just have no time to dedicate to testing this. Unless KGUIDE can pop in here and shed some light on why SMTPd seems to have a memory leak on my system.

Day 2, and no memory loss or BBS acting strange!

So while I did have the HNY96 virus, it looks like the culprit was enabling the SMTPd options.
