    CISA, ASD=E2=80=99s ACSC, and Partners Update Guidance on Detecting and Mit= igating Active Directory Compromises [ https://www.cisa.gov/resources-tools= /resources/detecting-and-mitigating-active-directory-compromises?utm_source= =3DActiveDirectoryCompromises&utm_medium=3DGovDelivery ] 09/15/2026 11:00 A=
    M EST=20

    Today, the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA), Austral= ian Signals Directorate=E2=80=99s Australian Cyber Security Centre (ASD=E2= =80=99s ACSC), and partners updated joint guidance, Detecting and Mitigatin=
    g Active Directory Compromises [ https://www.cisa.gov/resources-tools/resou= rces/detecting-and-mitigating-active-directory-compromises?utm_source=3DAct= iveDirectoryCompromises&utm_medium=3DGovDelivery ]. First published in Sept= ember 2024 and last updated in January 2025, this guidance describes 17 com= mon techniques threat actors use to compromise Microsoft=E2=80=99s Active D= irectory. The updates provide an expansion to the "Detecting DCSync" and "S= hadow Credentials" sections, highlighting new methods for threat actors to = gain access to accounts in a Windows domain while evading detection.

    Because it sits at the center of identity and access, compromising Active D= irectory often equates to compromising the entire enterprise, allowing mali= cious actors to access systems, data, and business applications. As such, i=
    t remains a primary target for malicious cyber activity. Compromise can ena= ble adversaries to escalate privileges, move laterally, establish persisten= ce, and, in many cases, gain broad control of enterprise and cloud resource=
    s.

    *Key themes include:*

    * understanding and baselining Active Directory;=20
    * detecting common credential theft and authentication compromises;=20

    * hardening Active Directory configuration to prevent privilege escalatio=
    n and persistence;=20
    * identifying indicators of full domain compromise; and=20
    * strengthening monitoring and logging.=20

    CISA encourages stakeholders, particularly identity and directory service a= dministrators, security operations teams, and incident responders, to revie=
    w and incorporate the recommended detection and mitigation techniques into = their Active Directory security program and defensive operations. Read the = updated guidance [ https://www.cisa.gov/resources-tools/resources/detecting= -and-mitigating-active-directory-compromises?utm_source=3DActiveDirectoryCo= mpromises&utm_medium=3DGovDelivery ] to learn more.
