I've got a pfsense box running now; it took more of an effort than I thought
it would. pfblockerng-devel and snort may be doing more damage than good. Everytime I try to connect to the secure websocket, I get thrown in the block list... I'm not sure if others can get to it or not. Does anyone have any good hints for this firewall and increasing security without breaking stuff?

I don't use either of those with pfSense and it's working fine. Snort is complicated and has a steep learning curve. Most of my errant traffic is
just script kiddies or these so-called "Internet security companies" portscanning for open ports, both of which my BBS' internal firewall
    handles.

Remember that pfSense automatically rejects all traffic on closed ports. It will protect you on all closed ports. Open ports, it's up to the computer where the ports are pointed to as to protecting itself as pfSense only
forwards the traffic through the firewall.

pfSense has excellent documentation online. Don't expect to learn pfSense immediately. It can do some very complicated things like you're attempting.

snort has a great mailing list if you need help. There's entire books dedicated to the setup and maintenance of snort.

What are you trying to protect? My BBS is on it's own machine that has NOTHING on it. I have my RGBOT bot blocker frontend running before the BBS, and nothing gets thru. Do I get a bunch of hits on port 23? Yeah, but it's just load RGBOT, esc twice wasn't entered, hangup. You're putting too much effort into this.

On my bbs everyone is blocked. until they are whitelisted.

those blocklists get huuuge because there's a lot of attackers every day.

in your case you might get a situation where all your nodes are tied up all day long, or the attacks take up a lot of resources and make your bbs run like shit. then you will need to protect.

I use windows firewall and peerblock, but I know they can only do so much.

ftp can be a little more tricky than other services because you (usually)
have to open two ports up for it to work - 20 and 21. Some
implementations that use passive ftp, like Synchronet, also require you to
open some extra ports. The server documentation should mention if that
    is necessary.

I noticed some script kiddie from Southern California camping out on six
nodes on my board. I'd kill one instance and he'd immediately reconnect.

So I looked his IP, put it into the BBS' firewall, restarted the firewall,
then went in, killed all of those instances and he hasn't been back.

I have ports 21, 22, and 23 open so I'm expecting to be attacked. But I
    have multiple layers of protection.

If anyone's interested,it looks like a smaller ISP called dock.net with a CIDR of 206.72.64.0/19.

It's sad that almost all of these attacks are just with scripts. Whatever happened to real hacking?

My Iphone is set to reject all unknown callers... only contacts can reach me.

Yeah, I know, but that pretty much nullifies one of the reasons for having a phone. Lots of people discard important calls and never know they did.

My workplace has that problem, or I should say patients have that problem. See, scheduled surgeries and techniques run on a tight time table because the waiting queues are chronically full and so many people is in such a state you cannot have them waiting for long. This means when somebody in the queue drops off for whatever reason, the secretary picks the list and attempts to reschedule somebody late in the queue and advance him to fill the gap.

And she grabs the phone, and the patient does not pick the call because he does not recognize the number, and the secretary moves over to the next person in the list if she does not make it in three attempts.

When I talk about this, everybody tells us how we should be doing things in order to accomodate people who is not picking the phone, but let's face it, we don't give a flying fuck because if the chances of having the call picked by each patient are 10% then we can be sure somebody will pick it and fill the gap eventually. The only people getting burned by this phenomena is the people refusing to pick the fucking phone.

Interesting approach. I bet you have a lot less stress and frustration, than those of us that try to answer all the calls.

My wife and I took care of her mother for approx a year. The phone calls on the home line got so bad about "want to sell your home"; that I turned the speakers off and let the answering machine answer everything. I would then play the messages back at my convience. Much easier, and less stress of trying to run and get the phone.

But I can see problems with this too. But it is a novel idea; I may have to try it one day and see how it works out.

I'm currently with Koodo. Both Telus & Koodo have the option to setup "vacation mode" where you record an outgoing message & then the caller is unable to leave a message.

Telus & Koodo also have a feature named "Call Control" which I've enabled. This will make a caller press a random number before the call is put through to you. This has eliminated all of those pesky scam calls. Call Control keeps track of the last 25 numbers that have called you, so if a number has pressed the correct number before they won't have to press it again. You can also log in and add numbers that are exempt.

In the past when I was with Fido I was able to get in touch with them (over Twitter at the time) and they were able to remove voicemail from my account.

Most of the unknown/non-contact numbers never leave one.

The ones that do, its either some weird UPS delivery nonsense message meant
for someone else or "This message is to inform you that your social security number is suspended. To avoid police action, call xxxxxxx"

Should have mentioned that if I order crap delivered or anything involving
a possibility of inbound calls with strangers, thats the only time I'll allow unknown callers. But as soon as I'm done the setting goes back again.
