astly drilled down further into the "why" for each ingredients rating. One might find it interesting to discover how many ingredients lead to ADHD, Austism, kidney failure, and much worse. The app does a fantastic job at giving context to the "if you can't pronounce it don't buy nor eat it" relating to the ingredients within America's food supply. It's helped keep our family more healthy and might be fun channel to explore, or maybe not, but thought I'd ask.

    Hey Mike / Admin,

One topic I enjoy learning more about is healthy food: Buying local, growing ones own food, avoiding toxic ingredients, news on recalls and contaminant discoveries: With bio-engineered ingredients, GMO's, unsafe ingredients such as Natamycin in shreaded cheese, or "food colorings" being unsafe for children, reports about Quaker Oats and Cheerios such
as below, all would be a nice echo to have for discussion within healthnet, if I may make such a request?

I read the article and downloaded the app. I will make sure my wife does the same she
she is the principle buyer in the family.

What name would you suggest for the conference area? Something like 'Eat Healthy' ?
    Good suggestion. Happy Thanksgiving!

Sorry I'm just now seeing this! I should probably add HobbyNet on my WWIV BBS where I only have 2 networks and am actively working on!

So Yuka is a great app. I think the term "Eat healthy" can be so subjective with all of the fad diets out there. What I learn with the Yuka app is that even those things listed as "organic" or "fat free" are indeed horrible for consumption. There are three things our family has tried to live by to improve our overall health and it has worked to some degree but is getting harder to do:
    1. If we can't pronounce the ingredient nor buy it on a spice isle, why eat it?
    2. Eat real food from local places whenever possible. It's not as convenient but is by far a better value and healthier options. For instance we buy 1/4 of a cow twice a year for a family of 5. It's 100% better than anything I've purchased at a restaurant or store.
    3. Use Yuka to help guide us on making good choices on food to consume that is not loaded with bio-engineered, genetically modified, made in a lab, toxic garbage causing serious health crisis's MOSTLY in America.

So maybe "Eat wisely?" I dunno. Maybe eat healthy is fine. I think it would be fun to share discoveries on foods we've grown to love and later find out they're horrible for us -- or the opposite obviuosly. Yuka is a really great app at providing alternate suggestions without limiting us to celery and peanut butter :) For instance, Cape Cod Potato Chips are actually rated GOOD! I was pleasantly surprised. Now it doesn't mean I won't over eat the bags suggested daily allowance, but the ingredients aren't poison -- huge win!

Anyway, yes I'd love to see good conversation and learn from others as we share in the growth of knowledge of eating well.

I love peanut butter and jelly sandwiches for lunch so I checked for peanut butter on the
app. There were several that were rated excellent, but not perfect because they were
    too caloric and too fatty.

I will concentrate on using it a bit more. Lots of good information. Perhaps we could
create a new echo HN_HEALTHFOOD or something like that?

If you haven't already, I'd like to see that. I'm using my 132x37 theme at the moment which I do not have sorted by group/area.
One thing important with Peanut butter is the oil should be floating on the top. IF it's nice and creamy without the oil, my understanding is that it's highly processed and as a result less healthy. In addition, many more additives to the PB than necessary. Overall the app has proven the phrase "less is more" to be very true: less ingredients (and those we can pronounce) tend to be the best for us. I'm looking forward to RFK meeting with big food this week, I hope positive outcomes are the result.

Never heard of yuka before your post.

Michael did you create a new echo group? What did you decide. Would like to add it if it has been created; will probably have some interesting discussions.

Thanks for sharing GF. I need to check out your board :-)

I have been using the Diet area for health food posts, but I can add it if you wish.
Frankly, there doesn't seem to be a huge demand for Health network yet. I would love
to see it grow. I would love to see more interesting discussions here.

Diet area is fine. I'm behind. So, I can go read diet. Just caught the conversation, and wanted to know where discussion was occuring about the yuka app.

Thanks for all you do. It is amazing the articles you find, and discuss.

Well .. Yuka isn't really about diet, it's about bad ingredients/poisons in our food, and the negative affects to (even age groups) relating to each hazardous ingredient.

For example: Goldfish, one of the only approved snacks for kids in k-5 schools:
Rating 9 out of 100 (100 being excellent for you)
    Additives: 2 High risk ingredients:
Monocalcium phosphate (texturing agent): This additive contains phosphorus, a mineral whose current intake exceeds recommendations, and whos excess could disrupt bone mineralization, have harmful effects on kidneys, and increase the risk of cardiovascular diseases. Additionally, it could be present in the form of nanoparticles, which may accumulate in organs.
Disodium Disphosphate (texturing agent): Suspected carcinogenic, cardiovascular diseases, adverse effects to the kidneys, disorder of bone mineralization, exceeding of the ADI. Additionally, associated iwth an increased risk for breast cancer. Again, contains phosphorus.
Limited Risk Additives: Annatto (food coloring) Yellow-orange food die derived from seeds of the achiote tree. Potential Allergen.
Limited Risk: Sodium Bicarbonate: Texturing agent has association with the onset of Breast Cancer.
Sodium: 220mg per serving (too high)

Now this one isn't "that bad," especially if all you do is eat one of those big boxes in an evening (kidding), but sincerely Yuka is about being informed because as the example above is an illustration of how "they" say "if it's school approved it's good for you!" And yet, it's one of the worst snack choices we could send our children to school with.

Yuka is very helpful too! It offers alternatives: All rated Excellent Almond-Nut-Thins Hint of Sea Salt Rating 84/100
    Crunchmaster Multi-Grain Baked Crackers 78/100
    Original Triscuit Crackers 60/100
    Pita Crackers Sea Salt 75/100

Anyway, just an example. It's fun to scan at the stores, and with renewed focus on our food supply at HHS and the USDA, we might start seeing better ingredients and ratings on more of our most popular foods, or them removed from shelves. For too long the FDA has turned its back from testing of American food prior to ingredients being added to our food supply. The ingredients are a core reason we have a health epidemic today. Chemicals are not ingredients, they are poison. With lab grown (cancer) meats, digitally printed steaks, and insect flour (insects are not for human consumption,) being introduced into many western countries (Europe, the Americas, etc..) it's always a good idea to know what is IN what we're eating.

There are times my wife will scan a snack, read Yuka, and say I don't care if it has Monocalcium Phosphate today, I want this snack; and she buys, and eats it. But at least she was informed.

When I think of "diet" I think of losing weight.

Just my two cents but happy to discuss this over in that area.
