The following was written by Dean Hough for Quora:
How does reducing testosterone impact prostate cancer growth, and what are the side
effects of this approach?
Iÿm told that prostate cancer uses testosterone for fuel to grow.
If you eliminate the testosterone, then you have removed the fuel, you turned your body
into a desert as far as prostate cancer is concerned.
By lowering, or better yet, eliminating testosterone, then prostate cancer canÿt grow.
There are few ways to reduce or eliminate testosterone through hormone therapy which
consists of an oral medication, or an injection containing leuprolide acetate or some
other scheme to eliminate testosterone.
Brilliant! Put the kibosh on that darn prostate cancer for sure! Who needs testosterone
anyway? Itÿs useless, doesnÿt serve much of a purpose, only causes trouble, right?
Wrong. Totally wrong. Lots of negative side effects.
I wonÿt go into everything but testosterone is largely what makes a man a man.
Remove the testosterone and now youÿre a woman. Okay, youÿre not a woman just like
that, but it is definitely the first step in getting a sex change.
They donÿt tell you about that. Itÿs temporary, hopefully your testosterone wonÿt be
blocked for more than about 6 months or so as your battle with cancer progresses.
Side effects? Severe hot flashes just like a woman going through menopause.
Mood swings. Your mind will most likely turn into clay because you wonÿt be able to think
like you normally could.
Your analytical ability will suffer the most.
These side effects vary between people. Some people donÿt have much impact from this.
Other people have significant impact from this.
Hormones are a delicate balance and they are extremely important for overall health.
You donÿt take an essential component away from a person and then not expect to have
all kinds of unexpected consequences. Itÿs serious business.
